Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5 (Karma Sannyasa Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning

Arjuna has heard Krishna praise both giving up action and acting with yoga, and asks plainly which is better. Krishna answers that both lead to the goal but acting without attachment is the easier and better path, and describes the inner peace of one who sees all beings with an equal eye.

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What chapter 5 is about

Chapter 4 ended with Krishna praising knowledge and the “renouncing” of action, and then telling Arjuna to stand up and act. Arjuna is confused, and chapter 5 opens with his honest question (5.1): you praise giving up action, and you praise the yoga of action; tell me clearly which one is better.

Krishna’s answer (5.2): both lead to the highest good, but the yoga of action is better. Real renunciation is inner: the true sannyasi is one who neither hates nor craves (5.3), and the paths of knowledge and of action reach the same place (5.5). Such a person acts in the world like a lotus leaf that sits in water and stays dry (5.10).

The second half describes the person who has found this freedom. Verse 5.18 is one of the Gita’s great statements of equality: the wise see the same divine self in a learned priest, a cow, an elephant, a dog and the person society casts out. Pleasures that come from outside begin and end, and so lead to sorrow (5.22); the lasting joy is within (5.24). The last verses give a first glimpse of meditation, which chapter 6 explains in full, and end with Krishna as the friend of all beings (5.29). Reading it with the meanings takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Verses 5.1–5.12: renouncing or acting?

Arjuna asks which path is better; Krishna explains that true renunciation is inner, and that the wise act without being stained.

Verse 5.1

अर्जुन उवाच
संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि।
यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्चितम्॥

Arjuna uvacha
sannyasam karmanam krishna punar yogam cha shamsasi,
yac chhreya etayor ekam tan me bruhi sunishchitam.

अर्थ: अर्जुन ने कहा: हे कृष्ण, आप कर्मों के संन्यास (त्याग) की प्रशंसा करते हैं और फिर कर्मयोग की भी। इन दोनों में से जो एक मेरे लिए निश्चित रूप से श्रेष्ठ हो, वह मुझे बताइए।

Meaning: Arjuna said: Krishna, you praise the giving up of actions, and then again the yoga of action. Tell me for certain which one of the two is better.

Verse 5.2

श्रीभगवानुवाच
संन्यासः कर्मयोगश्च निःश्रेयसकरावुभौ।
तयोस्तु कर्मसंन्यासात्कर्मयोगो विशिष्यते॥

Shri Bhagavan uvacha
sannyasah karma-yogash cha nihshreyasa-karav ubhau,
tayos tu karma-sannyasat karma-yogo vishishyate.

अर्थ: श्रीभगवान ने कहा: कर्म का संन्यास और कर्मयोग, दोनों परम कल्याण तक ले जाते हैं। पर उन दोनों में कर्म के संन्यास से कर्मयोग श्रेष्ठ है।

Meaning: The Lord said: Giving up action and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is better than giving up action.

Verse 5.3

ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति।
निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते॥

Jneyah sa nitya-sannyasi yo na dveshti na kankshati,
nirdvandvo hi mahabaho sukham bandhat pramuchyate.

अर्थ: जो न किसी से द्वेष करता है और न कुछ चाहता है, उसे सदा का संन्यासी जानो। हे महाबाहो, जो सुख-दुख जैसे द्वंद्वों से ऊपर है, वह आसानी से बंधन से छूट जाता है।

Meaning: Know that person as a true renunciate at all times who neither hates nor craves. Free from the pull of opposites, Arjuna, such a person is easily released from bondage.

Verse 5.4

सांख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः।
एकमप्यास्थितः सम्यगुभयोर्विन्दते फलम्॥

Sankhya-yogau prithag balah pravadanti na panditah,
ekam apy asthitah samyag ubhayor vindate phalam.

अर्थ: सांख्य (ज्ञान का मार्ग) और योग (कर्म का मार्ग) को नासमझ लोग अलग-अलग बताते हैं, ज्ञानी नहीं। जो इनमें से किसी एक पर भी ठीक से चलता है, उसे दोनों का फल मिलता है।

Meaning: Only the immature say that Sankhya (the path of knowledge) and Yoga (the path of action) are different, not the wise. One who truly follows even one of them gains the fruit of both.

Verse 5.5

यत्सांख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते।
एकं सांख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स पश्यति॥

Yat sankhyaih prapyate sthanam tad yogair api gamyate,
ekam sankhyam cha yogam cha yah pashyati sa pashyati.

अर्थ: ज्ञान के मार्ग वाले जिस स्थान को पाते हैं, कर्मयोगी भी वहीं पहुँचते हैं। जो सांख्य और योग को एक देखता है, वही सच में देखता है।

Meaning: The place reached by those on the path of knowledge is reached by those on the path of action too. One who sees knowledge and action as one truly sees.

Verse 5.6

संन्यासस्तु महाबाहो दुःखमाप्तुमयोगतः।
योगयुक्तो मुनिर्ब्रह्म नचिरेणाधिगच्छति॥

Sannyasas tu mahabaho duhkham aptum ayogatah,
yoga-yukto munir brahma na chirenadhigachchhati.

अर्थ: पर हे महाबाहो, कर्मयोग के बिना संन्यास पाना कठिन है। योग में लगा हुआ मुनि जल्दी ही ब्रह्म को पा लेता है।

Meaning: But without the yoga of action, Arjuna, true renunciation is hard to reach. The sage who is steady in yoga soon reaches Brahman.

Verse 5.7

योगयुक्तो विशुद्धात्मा विजितात्मा जितेन्द्रियः।
सर्वभूतात्मभूतात्मा कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते॥

Yoga-yukto vishuddhatma vijitatma jitendriyah,
sarva-bhutatma-bhutatma kurvann api na lipyate.

अर्थ: जो योग में लगा है, जिसका मन शुद्ध है, जिसने अपने आप को जीत लिया है, इंद्रियाँ वश में हैं, और जो सब प्राणियों की आत्मा को अपनी आत्मा देखता है, वह कर्म करते हुए भी उनसे लिप्त नहीं होता।

Meaning: One who is steady in yoga, pure in heart, master of the body and senses, whose self has become the self of all beings, is not stained even while acting.

Verse 5.8

नैव किंचित्करोमीति युक्तो मन्येत तत्त्ववित्।
पश्यञ्शृण्वन्स्पृशञ्जिघ्रन्नश्नन्गच्छन्स्वपञ्श्वसन्॥

Naiva kinchit karomiti yukto manyeta tattva-vit,
pashyan shrinvan sprishan jighrann ashnan gachchhan svapan shvasan.

अर्थ: सत्य को जानने वाला योगी देखते, सुनते, छूते, सूँघते, खाते, चलते, सोते और साँस लेते हुए भी यही मानता है कि “मैं कुछ भी नहीं करता”।

Meaning: The yogi who knows the truth thinks, “I do nothing at all”, even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing.

Verse 5.9

प्रलपन्विसृजन्गृह्णन्नुन्मिषन्निमिषन्नपि।
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेषु वर्तन्त इति धारयन्॥

Pralapan visrijan grihnann unmishan nimishann api,
indriyanindriyartheshu vartanta iti dharayan.

अर्थ: बोलते, छोड़ते, पकड़ते, आँखें खोलते और बंद करते हुए भी वह यही समझता है कि इंद्रियाँ अपने-अपने विषयों में काम कर रही हैं (आत्मा कर्ता नहीं है)।

Meaning: Speaking, letting go, taking hold, even opening and closing the eyes, such a person holds that it is only the senses moving among their objects, not the self.

Verse 5.10

ब्रह्मण्याधाय कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा करोति यः।
लिप्यते न स पापेन पद्मपत्रमिवाम्भसा॥

Brahmanyadhaya karmani sangam tyaktva karoti yah,
lipyate na sa papena padma-patram ivambhasa.

अर्थ: जो अपने सब कर्म ब्रह्म (भगवान) को सौंपकर, आसक्ति छोड़कर करता है, वह पाप से वैसे ही नहीं छूता जैसे कमल का पत्ता पानी में रहकर भी गीला नहीं होता।

Meaning: One who acts while placing all actions in Brahman and letting go of attachment is not touched by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not wetted by the water around it.

Verse 5.11

कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि।
योगिनः कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वात्मशुद्धये॥

Kayena manasa buddhya kevalair indriyair api,
yoginah karma kurvanti sangam tyaktvatma-shuddhaye.

अर्थ: योगी आसक्ति छोड़कर, अपने मन को शुद्ध करने के लिए शरीर, मन, बुद्धि और केवल इंद्रियों से भी कर्म करते हैं।

Meaning: Yogis act with the body, the mind, the understanding, even with the senses alone, letting go of attachment, to purify themselves.

Verse 5.12

युक्तः कर्मफलं त्यक्त्वा शान्तिमाप्नोति नैष्ठिकीम्।
अयुक्तः कामकारेण फले सक्तो निबध्यते॥

Yuktah karma-phalam tyaktva shantim apnoti naishthikim,
ayuktah kama-karena phale sakto nibadhyate.

अर्थ: योग में स्थित व्यक्ति कर्म के फल को छोड़कर स्थायी शांति पाता है; पर जो योग में नहीं है, वह इच्छा के वश होकर फल में अटक जाता है और बँध जाता है।

Meaning: One who is steady lets go of the fruit of action and finds lasting peace; one who is not, driven by desire and clinging to the fruit, is bound.

Verses 5.13–5.21: the free self and the equal eye

The self as a quiet dweller in the body, knowledge like the sun, and seeing all beings as equal.

Verse 5.13

सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी।
नवद्वारे पुरे देही नैव कुर्वन्न कारयन्॥

Sarva-karmani manasa sannyasyaste sukham vashi,
nava-dvare pure dehi naiva kurvan na karayan.

अर्थ: संयमी आत्मा सब कर्मों को मन से त्यागकर, नौ दरवाज़ों वाले नगर (शरीर) में सुख से रहती है; वह न स्वयं कुछ करती है, न किसी से करवाती है।

Meaning: Having let go of all actions in the mind, the self-controlled soul lives at ease in the city of nine gates, the body, neither acting nor making anything act.

Verse 5.14

न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभुः।
न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते॥

Na kartritvam na karmani lokasya srijati prabhuh,
na karma-phala-samyogam svabhavas tu pravartate.

अर्थ: प्रभु लोगों के लिए न कर्तापन बनाते हैं, न कर्म, न कर्म और फल का जोड़; यह सब स्वभाव (प्रकृति) से ही चलता है। कुछ टीकाकार यहाँ “प्रभु” का अर्थ भगवान, और कुछ आत्मा लेते हैं।

Meaning: The Lord does not create in people the sense of being the doer, nor their actions, nor the link between action and its fruit; it is nature that works. Some commentators take “the Lord” here as God, others as the self within.

Verse 5.15

नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः।
अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः॥

Nadatte kasyachit papam na chaiva sukritam vibhuh,
ajnanenavritam jnanam tena muhyanti jantavah.

अर्थ: सर्वव्यापी भगवान किसी का पाप या पुण्य अपने ऊपर नहीं लेते। ज्ञान अज्ञान से ढका हुआ है, इसीलिए प्राणी भ्रम में पड़ते हैं।

Meaning: The all-pervading one takes on no one’s sin or good deeds. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and that is why beings are confused.

Verse 5.16

ज्ञानेन तु तदज्ञानं येषां नाशितमात्मनः।
तेषामादित्यवज्ज्ञानं प्रकाशयति तत्परम्॥

Jnanena tu tad ajnanam yesham nashitam atmanah,
tesham aditya-vaj jnanam prakashayati tat param.

अर्थ: पर जिनका वह अज्ञान आत्मा के ज्ञान से नष्ट हो गया है, उनका ज्ञान सूर्य की तरह उस परम सत्य को प्रकाशित कर देता है।

Meaning: But for those whose ignorance has been destroyed by knowledge of the self, that knowledge, like the sun, lights up the Supreme.

Verse 5.17

तद्बुद्धयस्तदात्मानस्तन्निष्ठास्तत्परायणाः।
गच्छन्त्यपुनरावृत्तिं ज्ञाननिर्धूतकल्मषाः॥

Tad-buddhayas tad-atmanas tan-nishthas tat-parayanah,
gachchhantyapunar-avrittim jnana-nirdhuta-kalmashah.

अर्थ: जिनकी बुद्धि उसी में है, मन उसी में है, निष्ठा उसी में है, और जो उसी को परम लक्ष्य मानते हैं, उनके दोष ज्ञान से धुल जाते हैं और वे वहाँ पहुँचते हैं जहाँ से लौटना नहीं होता।

Meaning: Their understanding fixed on That, their heart in That, resting in That, holding That as their goal, their faults washed away by knowledge, they go where there is no coming back.

Verse 5.18

विद्याविनयसंपन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि।
शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिताः समदर्शिनः॥

shuni chaiva shvapake cha panditah sama-darshinah.

Verse 5.19

इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः।
निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्माद्ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः॥

Ihaiva tair jitah sargo yesham samye sthitam manah,
nirdosham hi samam brahma tasmad brahmani te sthitah.

अर्थ: जिनका मन समता में टिका है, उन्होंने इसी जीवन में जन्म-मरण के संसार को जीत लिया है। ब्रह्म दोषरहित और सबमें समान है, इसलिए वे ब्रह्म में ही स्थित हैं।

Meaning: Those whose minds rest in sameness have overcome the round of birth even here, in this life. Brahman is flawless and the same in all, so they rest in Brahman.

Verse 5.20

न प्रहृष्येत्प्रियं प्राप्य नोद्विजेत्प्राप्य चाप्रियम्।

sthira-buddhir asammudho brahma-vid brahmani sthitah.

Meaning: One who does not leap with joy on getting what is pleasant, nor shrink on meeting what is unpleasant, steady in mind and free of confusion, knows Brahman and rests in Brahman.

Verse 5.21

बाह्यस्पर्शेष्वसक्तात्मा विन्दत्यात्मनि यत्सुखम्।
स ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा सुखमक्षयमश्नुते॥

Bahya-sparsheshvasaktatma vindatyatmani yat sukham,
sa brahma-yoga-yuktatma sukham akshayam ashnute.

अर्थ: जिसका मन बाहर के विषयों में नहीं अटका, वह अपने भीतर का सुख पाता है। ब्रह्म से योग द्वारा जुड़ा वह व्यक्ति कभी न घटने वाला सुख भोगता है।

Meaning: One who is not attached to contacts with the outer world finds the happiness that is within. Joined to Brahman through yoga, that person enjoys a joy that never runs out.

Verses 5.22–5.29: lasting joy and peace

Why outer pleasures do not last, the joy within, a first glimpse of meditation, and Krishna as the friend of all.

आद्यन्तवन्तः कौन्तेय न तेषु रमते बुधः॥

Ye hi samsparsha-ja bhoga duhkha-yonaya eva te,
adyantavantah kaunteya na teshu ramate budhah.

अर्थ: इंद्रियों और विषयों के मेल से पैदा होने वाले सुख दुख की ही जड़ हैं। हे कौन्तेय, उनका आदि और अंत है, इसलिए ज्ञानी उनमें नहीं रमता।

Meaning: Pleasures born of the senses meeting their objects are in fact sources of sorrow. They have a beginning and an end, Arjuna, and the wise do not take delight in them.

Verse 5.23

शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात्।
कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः॥

Shaknotihaiva yah sodhum prak sharira-vimokshanat,
kama-krodhodbhavam vegam sa yuktah sa sukhi narah.

अर्थ: जो इसी जीवन में, शरीर छूटने से पहले, काम और क्रोध से उठने वाले आवेग को सह सकता है, वही योगी है और वही सुखी मनुष्य है।

Meaning: One whose happiness is within, whose delight is within and whose light is within: that yogi becomes one with Brahman and reaches the peace of Brahman (brahma-nirvana).

Verse 5.25

लभन्ते ब्रह्मनिर्वाणमृषयः क्षीणकल्मषाः।
छिन्नद्वैधा यतात्मानः सर्वभूतहिते रताः॥

Chapter colophon

ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे
श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादे कर्मसंन्यासयोगो नाम पञ्चमोऽध्यायः॥

Om tat sad iti shrimad-bhagavad-gitasu upanishatsu brahma-vidyayam yoga-shastre
shri-krishnarjuna-samvade karma-sannyasa-yogo nama panchamo 'dhyayah.

अर्थ: ॐ तत् सत्। इस प्रकार उपनिषद रूपी श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता में, जो ब्रह्मविद्या और योगशास्त्र है, श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुन के संवाद में “कर्मसंन्यासयोग” नाम का पाँचवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ।

Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the fifth chapter, called “the yoga of renouncing action”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.

Questions

Which is better according to Gita 5.2: giving up action or acting?

Krishna says both lead to the highest good, but the yoga of action (karma yoga) is better than giving up action. The reason, given in 5.6, is that real renunciation is hard to reach without first learning to act without attachment; and 5.3 adds that the true renunciate is simply one who neither hates nor craves.

What does the lotus leaf in Gita 5.10 mean?

A lotus leaf grows in water yet water slides off it. In the same way, a person who offers their actions to the divine and lets go of attachment lives and works in the world without being stained by it.

What does “sama-darshinah” (equal vision) in Gita 5.18 mean?

The verse lists a learned brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a person society cast out, and says the wise see all of them with an equal eye. It does not deny that they differ outwardly; it says the wise see the same self in each, and so treat none with contempt.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 29 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Karmasannyasayogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. Differences: Wikisource leaves out the speaker line “shri bhagavan uvacha” before 5.2, which the other sources and Gita Press have, so we keep it; in 5.8 we spell “pashyan shrinvan” as in Gita Press and IIT Kanpur, where Wikisource and the dataset have small misspellings; and in 5.5 (“sa pashyati”) and 5.21 (“yatsukham” as one word) we tidy two typing slips in the Wikisource text, following the other sources. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
