Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 6
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6 (Dhyana Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning
Having shown that action without attachment frees us, Krishna now turns to the inner practice that steadies the mind: meditation. He describes how to sit, how to live in balance and how to bring a wandering mind back, and reassures Arjuna that no sincere effort on this path is ever lost.

What chapter 6 is about
Chapter 6 is called Dhyana Yoga, the yoga of meditation; in the Gita’s own colophon it is “Atma Samyama Yoga”, the yoga of mastering oneself. Chapter 5 ended with a short glimpse of a meditator; here Krishna explains the practice in full. He begins by joining it to what came before (6.1): the real renunciate is not one who stops working, but one who does what should be done without leaning on the result.
Verses 6.5 and 6.6 are among the most quoted in the Gita: lift yourself by your own effort and do not let yourself sink, because your own mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Krishna then gives simple directions (6.10–6.17): a clean, quiet place; a firm seat neither too high nor too low; body, head and neck straight; and a life that is moderate in eating, sleeping and work. A steady mind is like a lamp in a place without wind (6.19).
Arjuna then says what many readers feel: the mind is as restless and strong as the wind (6.34). Krishna agrees, and gives the answer the Gita is known for (6.35): it is held by steady practice (abhyasa) and by letting go (vairagya). Arjuna’s last question is about the one who tries and does not get there; Krishna’s reply (6.40) is one of the kindest lines in the Gita: one who does good never comes to a bad end. The chapter closes by naming the devoted yogi as the closest of all (6.47). Reading it with the meanings takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
Verses 6.1–6.9: the true renunciate; lift yourself by yourself
Who is really a renunciate and a yogi, and how the mind can be friend or enemy.

Meaning: One who fell short in yoga goes to the worlds of those who have done good, lives there for countless years, and is then born in the home of people who are pure and prosperous.
Verse 6.42
Athava yoginam eva kule bhavati dhimatam,

Verse 6.44

jijnasur api yogasya shabda-brahmativartate.
Meaning: By the force of that earlier practice they are drawn onward, almost without choosing. Even one who only wishes to know about yoga goes beyond the rituals of the Veda (shabda-brahman).
Verse 6.45

Meaning: The yogi is greater than those who practise austerities, held greater even than the learned, and greater than those devoted to ritual work. So be a yogi, Arjuna. Here “the learned” is usually taken to mean those with book knowledge.
Verse 6.47

Questions
What does Bhagavad Gita 6.5 (uddhared atmanatmanam) mean?
It says: lift yourself up by your own effort and do not let yourself sink, because you are your own friend and your own enemy. Verse 6.6 explains: for one who has mastered the mind, the mind is a friend; for one who has not, it behaves like an enemy. It is a call to take responsibility for one’s own inner life.
How does the Gita say to control the restless mind?
In 6.34 Arjuna says the mind is as hard to hold as the wind. Krishna agrees, and in 6.35 gives two means: abhyasa, steady practice repeated over time, and vairagya, gradually letting go of the pull of what the senses want. Verse 6.26 adds a simple instruction: whenever the mind wanders, gently bring it back.
What happens to someone who tries yoga but does not succeed?
Arjuna asks this in 6.37–6.39. Krishna answers in 6.40 that such a person is never lost, in this world or the next, because no one who does good comes to a bad end. Verses 6.41–6.45 say the effort carries forward: the person is born again in good circumstances, regains their earlier understanding, and continues until they reach the goal.
How does the Gita describe sitting for meditation?
Verses 6.10–6.14 describe a quiet, clean place; a firm seat neither too high nor too low; body, head and neck held straight and still; the gaze lowered and not wandering; and a calm, fearless mind turned to God. Verses 6.16–6.17 add that it suits a balanced life, not too much or too little food, sleep or activity.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 47 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Atmasamyamayogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. The one real difference: in 6.32 the IIT Kanpur and dataset text has “sah yogi”, where Wikisource and Gita Press have the grammatical “sa yogi”, which we follow. We also write “na chatisvapna-” (6.16), “yattad buddhi-” (6.21) and “shraddhavan bhajate” (6.47) joined, as Gita Press and IIT Kanpur do. The chapter is often called Dhyana Yoga; its colophon names it Atma Samyama Yoga. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
