Durga Saptashati · Before the path
Durga Saptashati, before the path: Devi Kavach, Argala and Keelak in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning
Before the 700 mantras begin, the Saptashati is opened with three short hymns: the Devi Kavach, which asks the Goddess in her many forms to guard every direction and every part of us; the Argala, with its refrain “give me victory, give me good name”; and the Keelak, which tells how the text was “pinned” by Shiva and how it is opened.
What these three hymns are
The Durga Saptashati, also called the Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is a text of 700 mantras in 13 chapters from the Markandeya Purana. In the usual way of reciting it, as printed in the Gita Press edition, three short hymns come first. They are called its angas, its “limbs”: the Devi Kavach (the armour of the Goddess), the Argala Stotram (the “bolt” hymn) and the Keelak (the “pin”). They are not counted among the 700 mantras, and editions name their source in different ways. Many people also recite them on their own, especially the Kavach during Navratri. Recited in Sanskrit at a steady pace, the three take about 15–20 minutes together; reading them with the meanings takes about 45 minutes.
In the Devi Kavach, the sage Markandeya asks Brahma for the most secret protection (verse 1), and Brahma answers with the armour of the Goddess. It begins with the nine Durgas, Shailaputri to Siddhidatri (3–5), the nine forms worshipped on the nine nights of Navratri. Then come the Mothers on their mounts (9–12), the goddesses who guard the ten directions (17–20), and a long, gentle list in which a goddess is asked to guard each part of the body, the breath, the mind, the family and the road (21–42). The closing verses state the traditional fruits of reciting it (43–56); they are statements of faith, not promises.
An argala is the wooden bar that bolts a door, and the Argala Stotram is traditionally understood as drawing that bar back before the main text. It opens with the well-known verse “Jayanti Mangala Kali” (1), then each verse recalls a deed of the Goddess told in the Saptashati, from Madhu and Kaitabha to Shumbha and Nishumbha, and ends with the same refrain: “give me beauty, give me victory, give me good name, destroy my enemies” (3). Many teachers read the refrain inwardly too: the true form of the self, victory over one’s own anger and greed.
A kilaka is a pin or peg. The Keelak opens with a salutation to Shiva (1) and says that Shiva “pinned” the Saptashati, so that it would not be used lightly, and that the pin is released by reciting with understanding and by offering oneself to the Goddess (5–9). It is one of the most compressed texts in the whole recitation, and commentators explain several verses differently; our meanings follow the most widely held reading and say where it is uncertain. The Gita Press order, followed here, is Kavach, Argala, Keelak. Some traditions read Argala, Keelak and then Kavach; Gita Press itself notes these differences and suggests following the custom of one’s own family or region.

Questions
In what order are the Kavach, Argala and Keelak recited?
The Gita Press edition, which most Hindi-speaking homes use, gives Devi Kavach, then Argala, then Keelak, before chapter 1. Other texts give other orders: a verse quoted from the Chidambara Samhita puts Argala and Keelak first and the Kavach last. Both are traditional. If your family or teacher has a custom, follow it.
Can I recite the Devi Kavach on its own, without the whole Saptashati?
Yes. Many people recite the Kavach daily or through the nine days of Navratri as a prayer for protection. When the full Saptashati is recited, the Kavach itself says it should come first (verse 53). It takes about 10 minutes in Sanskrit.
What does “rupam dehi jayam dehi yasho dehi dvisho jahi” mean?
It is the refrain of the Argala Stotram: “give me beauty, give me victory, give me good name, and destroy my enemies.” Read plainly it asks for grace, success and honour. Many commentators also read it inwardly: rupa as one’s true form, the self; jaya as victory over oneself; and the enemies as desire, anger, greed and the like.
Who are the nine Durgas named in the Kavach?
Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri (verses 3–5). This list in the Devi Kavach is the usual source for the custom of worshipping one form of the Goddess on each of the nine days of Navratri, in this order.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked every line of the three hymns, with their viniyoga lines, against texts fetched on 1 November 2026: two different Gita Press (Gorakhpur) printings of “Shri Durga Saptashati” scanned on archive.org (the “mula bhaga, patha-vidhi sahita” edition and the illustrated edition with Hindi translation), whose order and numbering we follow; the pages “Devyah kavacham”, “Argalastotram” and “Kilakastotram” on Sanskrit Wikisource; and the Durga Saptashati text on sanskritdocuments.org, which includes all three. We compared them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling, and resolved each difference by the Gita Press page. For the Kavach (56 verses) and the Keelak (14 verses), Wikisource gives the Gita Press text; the differences are spellings, where we read “Brahmi” (11), “Guhyeshvari” (30, Wikisource “Guheshvari”) and “sahaja” (50, Wikisource “sahasa”). In 47 the two Gita Press scans read “devi kala”, the other sources “daivi kala” (divine power); we print “daivi”, and the meaning hardly changes. Verse 44 of the Kavach has three lines in Gita Press, as printed here.
The Argala comes in two recensions. We give the Gita Press text of 25 verses. Wikisource and sanskritdocuments.org give a longer version of 27 verses, common in South India, which starts with “Jaya tvam devi Chamunde” and then “Jayanti Mangala”, reads “bhutapaharini”, “madhu-kaitabha-vidhvamsi”, “chaparne duritapahe” and “lakshmivantam cha mam kuru”, adds verses on Dhumranetra and on Shumbha and Nishumbha in place of Gita Press 6, and ends “bharyam manoramam dehi … sagarasyachalodbhave” with the refrain and “saptashatim samaradhya varam apnoti durlabham”. The same southern text gives the Kavach in 61 verses, in a different order and with some other names (for example “Kauberi” in the north and “Nareshvari” for the belly), and the Keelak in 16 verses with different readings (such as “mantranam api kilakam”). The transliteration and the meanings are our own.
