Durga Saptashati · Chapter 3
Durga Saptashati Chapter 3 (The slaying of Mahishasura) in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning
The battle that began in chapter 2 reaches its end. One by one Mahishasura’s generals fall, then the buffalo-demon himself comes forward, changing shape again and again: buffalo, lion, swordsman, elephant. The Devi answers each form, says the famous words “Roar, fool, roar for a moment”, and ends his rule over the gods. All 44 mantras with meaning.
What chapter 3 is about
The Durga Saptashati (also called the Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path) is told by the sage Medhas to King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi. Chapters 2 to 4 form its middle part, the madhyama charitra, devoted to the Devi as Mahalakshmi. In chapter 2 the gods, driven from heaven by the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, poured out their radiance, and from it the Devi arose, armed with all their weapons; she rode out on her lion and began to destroy Mahishasura’s armies. Chapter 3 continues that battle without a pause, and the sage tells it plainly, as a story.
First the general Chikshura attacks (3.2) and falls; then Chamara on his elephant, whom the lion overcomes (3.11–3.16); then a whole line of named commanders (3.17–3.20). At last Mahishasura himself charges in his buffalo form, scattering the Devi’s attendants and shaking the earth, sea and sky (3.21–3.27). Bound by her noose, he becomes a lion, then a man with a sword, then an elephant, and then a buffalo again (3.29–3.33): a picture of how the ego keeps changing its shape when cornered.
The best-known lines are the Devi’s only words in the chapter (3.38): “Roar, fool, roar for a moment while I drink; when you are slain, it is the gods who will roar.” Then she pins him with her foot and he falls (3.40–3.42), and the gods, sages, Gandharvas and Apsaras celebrate (3.44). Gita Press counts 44 mantras here, including the three speaker lines. Reading the Sanskrit takes about 10 minutes; with the meanings, about 25.

Questions
What happens in Durga Saptashati chapter 3?
The Devi defeats Mahishasura’s generals (Chikshura, Chamara, Udagra, Karala, Bidala and others), and then Mahishasura himself, who keeps changing form: buffalo, lion, man with a sword, elephant, and buffalo again. Pinned under her foot, he is slain, and the gods and sages praise her. The gods’ hymn of praise follows in chapter 4.
What does “garja garja kshanam mudha” mean?
It is verse 3.38, the Devi’s words to Mahishasura: “Roar, fool, roar for a moment while I drink this honey; when I have slain you here, the gods will soon roar.” His noise is short-lived; the joy of the gods that follows is lasting. It is one of the most quoted lines of the Saptashati.
Why does the Devi drink in this chapter?
The text says she drank the “supreme drink” (3.34), called madhu, honey or wine, in 3.38, before the final blow. Traditional commentators mostly read it symbolically: as the bliss or nectar of her own power, or as a sign that the battle is play for her. Read it as part of an old story, not as a rule for worship.
Why are there 44 verses when some books show fewer?
The Gita Press edition, followed here, numbers the speaker lines “the sage said” and “the Devi said” as mantras, so that the whole Saptashati comes to 700. Editions of the Markandeya Purana (where this is usually chapter 83) do not count them, so the same text has 41 verses there.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 44 mantras and the colophon one by one against three independent sources fetched for this page: the Gita Press “Shri Durga Saptashati” (Gorakhpur) in the archive.org scans and their OCR text, the full Durga Saptashati text on sanskritdocuments.org (doc_devii/durga700), and chapter 83 of the Markandeya Purana on Sanskrit Wikisource, comparing the last two with ours by program after normalising punctuation and nasal spelling. We follow the Gita Press reading and numbering throughout. Where the texts differ we chose: “tach chhulam shatadha tena nitam” (3.10; Gita Press notes the variant “tena tach chhatadha nitam”), “vashkalam” (3.18; also spelled “bashkalam”), “parvatan uchchamsh” (3.25; Wikisource “uchchaih”), “sarudha” (3.40), and “padakrantas … nija-mukhat tatah” (3.41; sanskritdocuments “padakranta … tada”). Gita Press notes that some manuscripts add two verses after 3.20 (Kalaratri slaying Kala and Ugradarshana) and two after 3.42 (Mahisha’s fall announced across the three worlds); like Gita Press we leave them out of the count. Gita Press prints a short meditation verse (dhyana) at the head of this chapter, beginning “udyad-bhanu-sahasra-kantim”; it is a later liturgical addition and is not one of the 44 mantras, so we have not included it here. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
