Durga Saptashati Chapter 8 (Raktabija Vadha) in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning

Shumbha now sends his entire army. The powers of Brahma, Shiva, Skanda, Vishnu, Varaha, Narasimha and Indra come forth as goddesses to fight beside Chandika, and the Goddess sends Shiva himself as her messenger. Then comes Raktabija: from every drop of his blood that touches the ground, another warrior like him rises, until Kali, as Chamunda, catches the blood before it can fall.

What chapter 8 is about

Chapter 8 continues the uttama charitra, the third part of the Saptashati (chapters 5 to 13), told by the sage Medhas to King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi. In chapter 7 Kali came forth from the Goddess’s brow, defeated Chanda and Munda, and was named Chamunda. Now Shumbha, beside himself with anger, orders every clan of his army to march (8.4–8.6). The Goddess, her lion and Kali answer the approaching host with the twang of a bowstring, a roar and the ringing of a bell (8.8–8.10).

Then the powers (shaktis) of the gods come out of their bodies as goddesses, each with her god’s form, ornaments and mount (8.13–8.21): Brahmani on a swan-drawn chariot, Maheshvari on a bull, Kaumari on a peacock, Vaishnavi on Garuda, Varahi with a boar’s body, Narasimhi with a lion’s mane, and Aindri on an elephant. These are the Matrikas, the Mothers, honoured to this day as the Saptamatrikas. A fierce power then springs from the Goddess herself and sends Shiva as her messenger with a simple offer: give the three worlds back to Indra and go to the underworld if you wish to live (8.26). For this she is called Shivaduti, “she whose messenger is Shiva” (8.28).

The heart of the chapter is the fight with Raktabija, “he whose blood is seed” (8.40): every drop of his blood that falls to the ground becomes another asura as strong as he is (8.41), so every wound only multiplies him until the world is full of his copies (8.52). Chandika’s answer is to ask Chamunda to open her mouth wide and catch the blood before it falls (8.53–8.56); drained, he falls at last (8.62). The scenes are fierce and the text tells them plainly. Many teachers read Raktabija as desire or worry, which multiplies each time we fight it on its own terms and ends only when it is taken in at the root. The chapter has 63 mantras; reciting it in Sanskrit takes about 10 minutes, and reading it with the meanings about 25.

Questions

Who was Raktabija and what was his power?

Raktabija, “he whose blood is seed”, was one of Shumbha’s great commanders. Whenever a drop of his blood fell to the ground, another asura of his size and strength rose from it (8.41). So every wound the Mothers gave him only multiplied him, until the world was full of his copies (8.48–8.52). The Goddess ended this by having Chamunda catch the blood before it reached the ground (8.53–8.61).

Who are the Matrikas (the Mothers) in chapter 8?

They are the powers (shaktis) of the gods, who come out of the gods’ bodies in the same form, with the same ornaments and mounts (8.13–8.21): Brahmani (Brahma), Maheshvari (Shiva), Kaumari (Skanda), Vaishnavi (Vishnu), Varahi (Vishnu as the boar), Narasimhi (Vishnu as the man-lion) and Aindri (Indra). Together they are honoured as the Saptamatrikas, the seven Mothers; with Chamunda they are often counted as eight. In chapter 10 the Goddess draws them all back into herself, showing that they were her own powers.

Why is the Goddess called Shivaduti?

In 8.23–8.28 a fierce power springs from the Goddess’s body and sends Shiva himself to Shumbha and Nishumbha with her message: return the three worlds to Indra and go to the underworld if you want to live. Because she made Shiva her messenger (duta), she is called Shivaduti. The verse is often quoted to show the Goddess’s supremacy in the Saptashati: even the great gods serve her purpose.

What does the Raktabija story mean for daily life?

Many teachers read Raktabija as desire, anger or anxious thought: struck at directly, each one seems to give birth to more, the way one worry breeds ten. The Goddess does not win by striking harder but by changing the method, catching the drops before they can take root. Readers take from this that some troubles are ended not by fighting them on their own terms but by taking them in at the source, with awareness. This is an interpretation; the text itself tells the story as a battle.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 63 mantras and the colophon one by one against texts fetched on 1 November 2026: the complete Saptashati (“durga700”) on sanskritdocuments.org and chapter 88 of the Markandeya Purana on Sanskrit Wikisource (the Devi Mahatmya is adhyayas 81–93 there), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions, and against two archive.org scans of Gita Press editions of the “Shri Durga Saptashati” (the mula bhaga and the illustrated edition with Hindi translation), read by hand. We follow the Gita Press reading and numbering, which counts the speaker line 8.1 and the closing half-verse 8.63 as mantras, giving 63. Readings chosen with Gita Press and Wikisource against sanskritdocuments: “mauryah kalakeyah” (8.6, sanskritdocuments “maurvah kalikeyah”), “tan-nadam ambika” (8.9, “tan nadan”, which Gita Press notes as a variant), “brahmani sabhidhiyate” (8.15, “brahmanity abhidhiyate”) and “praha satvara” (8.53). In 8.41 we keep the Gita Press reading “tat-pramanas tadasurah”, printed in both scans, where the other two sources have “tat-pramano mahasurah”. Wikisource has a few further readings that Gita Press lists as variants: “sa cha simho” (8.9), “jajne varaham … bibhrati” (8.19), “chakrena” for “vajrena” (8.60) and “shastra-samhatito hatah” (8.61); it also carries a short prose gloss after 8.11, which we leave out. Gita Press notes that some copies add the speaker line “Rishir uvacha” after Chandika’s words to Kali. Gita Press prints “Om” before 8.1 and a meditation verse (dhyana, “arunam karuna-tarangitakshim…”) at the head of the chapter; on these pages the dhyana verses are given only at the head of the three parts of the text (chapters 1, 2 and 5), and the dhyana is not counted among the 700 mantras. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
