Gajendra Moksh: the elephant king's prayer, with meaning

An elephant held by a crocodile in a lake, too tired to fight on, remembers a prayer from a past life and calls to the Lord with nothing left but trust. This is that prayer, from the Bhagavata Purana, with the story around it and a plain meaning for every verse.

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What Gajendra Moksh is

Gajendra means “king of elephants” and moksha means “release”. The name covers both a story and a prayer from the Bhagavata Purana (Book 8, chapters 2 to 4): an elephant caught by a crocodile is saved by Vishnu after he gives up struggling and turns to him. The prayer itself, in chapter 3, is one of the best-loved hymns of the Vaishnava tradition, and many homes keep it in a small booklet beside the Vishnu Sahasranama.

What makes the prayer unusual is that the elephant names no particular god. He speaks to the one source of everything, beyond form and words, and asks above all to be free of the veil of ignorance, not only of the crocodile. Verse 1 tells us he learned it in an earlier life; verses 2 to 29 are his prayer; verses 30 to 33 tell how Vishnu came. Some verses are philosophical, so read the meanings once slowly; after that the prayer reads as a simple act of trust.

The story

In the middle of the ocean of milk stood a great mountain called Trikuta, with three peaks of gold, silver and iron, covered in forests. In one of its valleys lay a garden of Varuna, lord of the waters, and in the garden a lake full of lotuses. One hot day the leader of the mountain's elephants, a huge and proud tusker, came down to the lake with his herd. He drank, sprayed water over his companions and the young ones, and played in the cool water without a care.

Suddenly a powerful crocodile seized his leg. The elephant pulled with all his strength, and his family tried to help, but none of them could free him. The Bhagavata says the struggle went on for a thousand years: the crocodile, in its own element, grew stronger while the elephant, in water not his own, grew weaker. At last, alone and exhausted, he understood that neither his strength nor his family could save him. In that moment he remembered a prayer he had learned in an earlier life, and he offered it to the Lord who is the shelter of all.

Because he praised the formless source of all and no single god, the gods did not come forward; Vishnu himself came, riding on Garuda with the discus in his hand. Seeing him, the elephant lifted a lotus in his trunk and called out “Narayana, I bow to you.” Vishnu pulled him and the crocodile out of the lake together, cut the crocodile's jaws open with his discus, and set the elephant free.

Chapter 4 then tells who the two really were. The crocodile had been a gandharva, a celestial singer named Huhu, who had once playfully pulled the leg of the sage Devala while he bathed; the sage's curse made him a crocodile, and Vishnu's touch released him, so he bowed, sang the Lord's praise and returned to his world. The elephant had been Indradyumna, a king of the Pandya country and a devoted worshipper of Vishnu. Sitting in silent worship on a mountain, he failed to greet the sage Agastya, who said he would be born as an elephant, slow of mind. Yet his devotion stayed with him, and that is why the prayer came back to him in his need. Freed, Gajendra took on a form like the Lord's own and went with him.

At the end of the story Vishnu says that those who wake before dawn and remember this story and praise him with this prayer will be given the highest goal when their life ends. For many readers the story is a picture of every life: we struggle in waters not our own, held by things we cannot shake off, until we stop relying only on our own strength and ask for help.

How to recite it

The 33 verses take about twelve to fifteen minutes at a steady pace.

  1. Bathe or wash, sit before a picture of Vishnu or Krishna and light a diya; a tulsi leaf and a flower are enough as an offering.
  2. Early morning is the traditional time, following Vishnu's words at the end of the story. Many people recite it on Thursdays, on Ekadashi, or daily during a difficult period.
  3. Read the story once before you begin, so that you know who is speaking and why. The longer verses (4 to 8, 15 to 21, 23 to 25, 28 and 30 to 33) have a different metre: take them a little more slowly and pause where the English letters show hyphens.
  4. End with “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or with the aarti Om Jai Jagdish Hare.

Meaning: Salutations again and again to you, whose three powers (sattva, rajas and tamas) move with a force none can withstand, and who appear as everything the mind can know. You protect those who come to you; your power has no end; and those whose senses run wild cannot find the way to you.

Shri Shuka uvacha.
Evam gajendram upavarnita-nirvishesham brahmadayo vividha-linga-bhidabhimanah,
naite yadopasasripur nikhilatmakatvat tatrakhilamara-mayo harir avirasit.

Meaning: Shri Shuka said: Gajendra had praised the Lord without naming any particular form, so Brahma and the other gods, each of whom identified with his own separate form, did not come forward. Then Hari, who as the Self of all holds every god within him, appeared there.

Verse 31

Tam tadvad artam upalabhya jagan-nivasah stotram nishamya divijaih saha samstuvadbhih,
chhandomayena garudena samuhyamanash chakrayudho 'bhyagamad ashu yato gajendrah.

Meaning: Seeing him in such distress and hearing his hymn, the Lord in whom the whole world dwells, discus in hand and carried by Garuda, whose body is made of the Vedic metres, came at once to where Gajendra was, with the gods following and singing his praise.

Verse 32

So 'ntah-sarasy uru-balena grihita arto drishtva garutmati harim kha upatta-chakram,
utkshipya sambuja-karam giram aha krichchhran narayanakhila-guro bhagavan namas te.

Meaning: Held fast in the lake by the mighty crocodile and in pain, Gajendra saw Hari in the sky on Garuda, his discus raised. Lifting his trunk with a lotus in it, he spoke with great effort: 'Narayana, teacher of the whole world, Lord, I bow to you.'

Verse 33

Tam vikshya piditam ajah sahasavatirya sagraham ashu sarasah kripayojjahara,
grahad vipatita-mukhad arina gajendram sampashyatam harir amumuchad uchchhriyanam.

Meaning: Seeing him in pain, the Unborn Lord came down at once and, out of compassion, drew him out of the lake together with the crocodile. Then, as the gods looked on, Hari split open the crocodile's jaws with his discus and set Gajendra free.

Questions

Where does Gajendra Moksh come from?

From the Bhagavata Purana, Book 8 (the eighth skandha). Chapter 2 describes the lake and the crocodile, chapter 3 holds the prayer and the rescue, and chapter 4 tells the earlier lives of the elephant and the crocodile. The prayer recited as “Gajendra Moksh” is chapter 3, verses 1 to 33.

When is it usually recited?

Traditionally in the early morning, because at the end of the story Vishnu speaks of those who remember it at daybreak. Many people also read it on Thursdays and Ekadashi, and turn to it in times of trouble, debt or illness, as a prayer of surrender. It is a prayer for trust, not a promise of any particular result.

Why do some books give 46 verses for this chapter?

Editions divide the chapters differently. In the common Gita Press text, chapter 3 ends with the rescue at verse 33, and what happens next (the gods' joy, Huhu and Indradyumna) begins chapter 4. Some editions, such as the one used by ISKCON, run these verses on in chapter 3, which then has 46 verses. The words of verses 1 to 33 are the same.

Can I recite it without knowing Sanskrit?

Yes. Read along in the English letters, and read the meanings first so you know what you are saying. If the whole text is too long at first, the story plus verses 2, 3, 9 and 32 make a short, complete prayer, and you can add more over time.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We follow the Bhagavata Purana, Book 8, chapter 3, as given on Sanskrit Wikisource (Gita Press verse division, 33 verses), and checked every verse against two further editions: the Devanagari text on Vedabase (Bhaktivedanta Book Trust) and the GRETIL electronic text of the Bhagavata Purana. All three agree word for word; the only differences are layout (Vedabase prints verses 8 and 9 as one block and continues the chapter to verse 46) and small typing slips on Wikisource (“gajendra ah!” in verse 31, a broken “kadindri yanam” in verse 28), which we correct to the reading of the other two. We keep the speaker lines “Shri Badarayanir uvacha”, “Shri Gajendra uvacha” and “Shri Shuka uvacha” as the text has them. The story is retold in our own words from chapters 2 to 4; the transliteration and meanings are our own.
