Who Khatu Shyam is, and what the chalisa is

Khatu Shyam, lovingly called Shyam Baba and Haare ka Sahara, “the support of those who have lost”, is worshipped at Khatu in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. Folk tradition, drawing on stories told around the Mahabharata, identifies him with Barbarika, a son of Ghatotkacha and so a grandson of Bhima. Barbarika was a warrior of unmatched skill who vowed to fight for whichever side was losing. Knowing that such a vow would leave no one standing, Krishna asked him for the gift of his head; Barbarika gave it gladly, watched the whole war from a hilltop, and was blessed that in the age of Kali he would be worshipped by Krishna's own name, Shyam.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty). The Khatu Shyam Chalisa opens with a doha to the guru, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. It names Shyam by Krishna's many names, recalls those saved by the divine name (the courtesan who taught her parrot, Shabari, Ahalya, Ajamila), and ends at Khatu, where the sound of his flute draws everyone to him. Its opening chaupais say openly that the stories of Barbarika's birth differ from telling to telling. No poet is named; it is a traditional hymn printed in the common chalisa collections.

Many families recite it on the bright Ekadashi of each month and at the Phalgun fair at Khatu, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Khatu Shyam Chalisa?

No poet is named in any edition we checked, and none claims an author. It is printed as a traditional hymn in the common chalisa collections, including a Haridwar collection of 2000.

Is Khatu Shyam the same as Krishna?

Devotees worship Shyam Baba as Krishna himself, present at Khatu in the form of Barbarika, who received Krishna's name as a blessing. That is why the chalisa praises him with Krishna's names, and also with Vishnu's and Rama's.

Why is he called “Haare ka Sahara”?

Because Barbarika vowed to stand with whichever side was losing. Devotees remember this by calling him the support of those who have lost, the one to turn to when everything seems to be going wrong.

Why does the chalisa give two stories of his birth?

Different tellings make Barbarika either Bhima's son or his grandson (through Ghatotkacha), and name his mother differently. The chalisa says that each story is true in its own age of creation (kalpa), so there is no contradiction for the devotee.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent versions: the Randhir Prakashan collections Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (Haridwar, 2000) and 51 Chalisa Sangrah (2004), scanned on archive.org, which print the same text; Tring (tring.co.in); and Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com; InstaAstro copies it word for word and is not counted). All have the same opening doha, forty chaupais in the same order (Bhakti Bharat leaves out ch. 10) and the same closing doha, and none names a poet. Where they differ we follow the reading of the print and Tring, which agree almost everywhere.

Variants: opening doha charanan (Tring and Bhakti Bharat; print charan), sumiri (print; the others spell it sumeer) and bhanat hoon, “I recite” (print; Tring banat hai, Bhakti Bharat bhajat hoon); ch. 3 Ahilvati and kahaaya (Bhakti Bharat Ahilaavaati, kahlaaya); ch. 4 sahi (Bhakti Bharat kahi); ch. 10 Narhari roop… (print and Tring; missing in Bhakti Bharat); ch. 13 Ghanshyaama … abhiraama (for the rhyme; print and Tring Ghanshyaam); ch. 15 Tribhuvan ujiyaara (Bhakti Bharat jai bhuvan pasaara); ch. 18 kavi kovid kari sake na (Tring; garbled in the other two); ch. 21 keer padhaavat, “teaching her parrot” (Tring; print and Bhakti Bharat kaur, which makes no sense here); ch. 23 raj nit (print; Bhakti Bharat raj chit); ch. 28 shaam dupahari aru (Bhakti Bharat Shyaam dupahari kar); ch. 29 jiske rath (print; Tring sike, Bhakti Bharat jis); ch. 31 ke haale (print and Tring; Bhakti Bharat ke hi le); ch. 35 je (Bhakti Bharat jab); ch. 39 daud daud (print and Tring; Bhakti Bharat hadbad kar). Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
