Listen: Vishnu Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Fast recitation, full text (3 min)

The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.

Who Vishnu is, and what the chalisa is

Vishnu is the preserver in the Hindu trinity, beside Brahma the creator and Shiva the transformer. He is pictured dark blue, resting on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk with Lakshmi at his feet, holding the conch, the discus, the mace and the lotus. Whenever dharma weakens, the Puranas say, he comes down into the world as an avatar: as the fish (Matsya), the tortoise (Kurma), the boar (Varaha), Narasimha, Rama, Krishna and others.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Vishnu Chalisa opens with one doha and has forty chaupais (couplets). The first half praises Vishnu's form and retells his avatars: Rama, Varaha, the churning of the ocean and Mohini, Bhasmasura, and the story of the demon Jalandhar and his faithful wife Vrinda, who in later tradition becomes the Tulsi plant. The second half is a humble personal prayer: “I do not know the right way to worship you; take me as your own.” No author is known; the last line names “Nigam”, which may be the poet's name or may simply mean the Vedas. It is a traditional folk hymn, printed without an author in chalisa collections.

Many families recite it on Thursdays and on Ekadashi, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Vishnu Chalisa?

No author is known. The last chaupai begins “Nigam sada ye vinay sunavai”: Nigam may be the poet's own name, as chalisa poets often sign the last verse, or it may mean the Vedas (nigama). The hymn is printed without an author in chalisa collections and has been sung for generations.

What is the story of Jalandhar and Vrinda in the chalisa?

In the Shiva Purana and the Padma Purana, the demon Jalandhar could not be defeated while his wife Vrinda kept her vow of faithfulness. When he attacked the gods and even tried to deceive Parvati, Vishnu appeared to Vrinda, first as a sage and then in Jalandhar's own form; once her vow was broken, Shiva could slay him. Grieving, Vrinda cursed Vishnu, and later tradition says she became the Tulsi plant, whom Vishnu honours as his beloved; this is remembered in Tulsi Vivah.

Why does the chalisa link the fourteen treasures with the fish avatar?

The Puranas link the churning of the ocean, which brought out the fourteen treasures, with the tortoise avatar (Kurma), and the rescue of the Vedas with the fish (Matsya). The chalisa runs these stories together in a few lines, as folk hymns often do; we translate what the text says and note it here.

Is Vishnu linked with Jupiter in Jyotish?

Yes, traditionally: Jupiter (Guru, Brihaspati) is associated with Vishnu, and Thursday (Guruvar) with both. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result. To see where Jupiter sits in your own chart, open your free Kundli.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across five versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com; InstaAstro carries the same text), Patrika (patrika.com), Amar Ujala (amarujala.com, first twenty-four chaupais), and two printed chalisa collections from Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar (Aarti Chalisa Sangrah, 2000, and 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004, both scanned on archive.org). None names an author. The publisher's copyright notice in the printed books covers the collection; the chalisa itself is printed by many publishers as a traditional text. We give one opening doha and forty chaupais, as all versions do; Patrika closes with “iti Shri Vishnu Chalisa”.

Variants (we follow the reading most versions share): ch. 13 Vaaraah … Hiranyaaksh (Bhakti Bharat Varaah … Haranyaaksh); ch. 27 Dhruv (printed books Dhuru); ch. 30 nij darash (printed books nit darash, “daily sight”); ch. 31 chahat (Patrika chaahata); ch. 32 jap poojan (Patrika jab poojan); ch. 36 sevkaai (printed books sivkaai); ch. 39 sut sampati (Patrika and both printed books; Bhakti Bharat sukh sampatti, which repeats sukh in the same line). Small spelling differences (छवि/छबि, ढुँढवाया/ढूंढवाया, जलंधर/जलन्धर) are not listed.

Unclear lines: some lines read the same in every version but are worded unclearly, probably from old copying; we keep the common wording and translate with care. Ch. 6 repeats “mad lobh” in both halves; we read the first half as “truth and dharma resound (in you), pride and greed do not”. Ch. 15 amilakh we read as ami lakh, “seeing the nectar”. Ch. 14 joins the fourteen treasures to the fish avatar, and ch. 17 has majhaaya, which we take as “had (the ocean) churned”. In the Jalandhar passage (ch. 21–26): ch. 22 haar paar Shiv sakal banaai we read as “Shiva tried every means”, following the Shiva Purana story; ch. 25 dekhat teen danuj shaitaani we read teen as tin, “that”, so “seeing (you in) the demon's form”; ch. 26 shaitaani we take as “the wicked one”. These readings follow the Purana story the lines tell. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
