Who Santoshi Maa is, and what the chalisa is

Santoshi Maa (Santoshi Mata, “the Mother of contentment”) is loved as the daughter of Ganesha and his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi; folk tradition says she was born when Ganesha's sons Shubh and Labh longed for a sister. She is pictured in red or white, four-armed and gentle, holding a sword, a trident and a bowl of rice, and her gift is santosh: the peace of being content with what one has.

She is a young goddess in Hindu worship. Her devotion grew in North and West India through the 20th century, mostly among women, and spread across the country after the 1975 Hindi film Jai Santoshi Maa. Her best-known observance is a Friday vrat told in a simple katha, with an offering of jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana) and the custom of keeping away from sour food that day.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Santoshi Mata Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty chaupais (couplets) and, in some editions, a closing doha. It praises her form, sees her in the great goddesses of India's shrines (Vindhyavasini, Kali of Calcutta, Mahalakshmi of Bombay, Meenakshi of Madurai, Annapurna of Kashi), describes her Friday vrat, and ends with a prayer for help and devotion. No poet is named; it is an anonymous devotional hymn of the 20th century, printed in small booklets with the vrat katha.

Many families recite it on Fridays, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Santoshi Mata Chalisa?

No poet is named in the text or in the editions we checked. It is an anonymous devotional hymn from the 20th century, when Santoshi Maa's worship spread, and it is printed freely with her vrat katha.

Whose daughter is Santoshi Maa?

Popular tradition, and the chalisa itself (“Jai Ganesh ki suta Bhavani”), calls her the daughter of Ganesha and of Riddhi and Siddhi, and the sister of Shubh and Labh.

Why does the chalisa mention jaggery, chickpeas and Friday?

Because it describes her best-known custom, the Friday vrat, in which devotees offer gud-chana, hear her katha and keep away from sour food that day. The chalisa describes the custom; how a family keeps it is its own choice.

Is Santoshi Maa a form of Durga?

She has her own story as Ganesha's daughter, but the chalisa sees the one great Mother in her: it names her as Durga at Pavagadh, Kali in Calcutta, Mahalakshmi in Bombay and Annapurna in Kashi.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across four published versions: Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org), Sanskrit Documents (sanskritdocuments.org), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and InstaAstro (instaastro.com; the same as Bhakti Bharat). The two opening dohas and the forty chaupais are word for word the same in all of them. None names an author.

Variants: the closing doha (“Santoshi Maa ke sada…”) is in Bhakti Bharat and InstaAstro but not in Bharat Discovery or Sanskrit Documents; we keep it, as it is commonly sung. Ch. 15 sukh dukh (Bharat Discovery sukh duhkh); ch. 14 Maha Lakshmi (one source misprints Lakshmi). A different, shorter text circulates online under the same name (opening “Bandaun Santoshi charan… dukh daaridrya nivaar”); it is not found in the printed editions and is not used here. Small spelling differences (sant-/san-, nishchay with or without a joining mark) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
