Jai Lakshmi Ramana: Shri Satyanarayan aarti lyrics with meaning
The aarti that closes the Satyanarayan katha on Purnima, housewarmings and family occasions. Its verses retell the katha in brief. Here in Hindi, in English letters and with a plain meaning.
Listen: Satyanarayan Aarti: Jai Lakshmi Ramana
A computer-voiced recitation over a soft aarti rhythm of claps, bell and manjira, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What this aarti is
Satyanarayan is Vishnu worshipped as Truth itself. His puja and katha, a set of short stories told from the Skanda Purana tradition, is one of the most common family pujas in North India: on Purnima (full moon), at a housewarming, after a wedding or any happy event. “Jai Lakshmi Ramana” (glory to the beloved of Lakshmi) is the aarti that closes it.
The aarti is a traditional composition of unknown authorship. Its middle verses are a short retelling of the katha: the old brahmin, the poor woodcutter, the merchant who forgot his promise, the king who ignored the cowherds' offering. It ends with the offerings of the puja, the sawaya prasad of one and a quarter measures, bananas and tulsi. Once through takes about five minutes.
When it is sung
- At the end of the Satyanarayan katha, after the fifth chapter and before the prasad is shared.
- Purnima (full moon), the usual day for the katha, and on Ekadashi in some homes.
- Griha pravesh, weddings, birthdays, a new job or any family milestone.
How to do the aarti, step by step
You need no priest. Aarti is the closing part of any puja, and it can also be done on its own, morning or evening, in about five minutes.
- Wash your hands and face and stand or sit before a picture or murti of Satyanarayan (Vishnu).
- Prepare a plate (thali) with a ghee diya or a piece of camphor, a little roli and rice, a flower and tulsi leaves, bananas and the panjiri or sheera prasad.
- Light the diya or camphor. Someone rings a small bell, or everyone claps along while singing.
- Sing the aarti below and slowly wave the plate clockwise before the deity. A common household way: four times at the feet, twice at the middle, once at the face, then seven times around the whole form.
- After the last verse, circle a little water around the plate and set it down.
- Everyone takes the aarti: hold both palms briefly over the flame and touch them to your eyes and head. Share the prasad.
Tunes and a few words differ from family to family. Sing it the way your home does; the feeling matters more than the exact wording.

Questions
Who wrote the Satyanarayan aarti?
The author is not known. Some versions end with a verse naming “Shivanand” (a closing signature that also appears in other aartis), but the oldest printed texts we checked do not have it. It is a traditional aarti, free for everyone.
Is it the same as Om Jai Jagdish Hare?
No, but it is sung to almost the same tune, and both are addressed to Vishnu. Many families sing “Jai Lakshmi Ramana” right after the katha and then “Om Jai Jagdish Hare”.
What do the middle verses refer to?
To the stories of the Satyanarayan katha: a poor brahmin and a woodcutter who prosper after the vrat, a merchant who forgets his vow and suffers until he keeps it, and a king who scorns the cowherds' prasad and later worships with them. The aarti gives each in a line or two.
Text and sources
The text is a traditional aarti of unknown authorship, in the public domain. Every line was checked against the Gita Press “Shri Aarti Sangrah”, the older Khemraj Shrikrishnadas “Arti Sangrah” (Bombay), Bhakti Bharat and Drik Panchang. We follow Gita Press, with “Om … swami jai Lakshmi Ramana” in the refrain as it is commonly sung (Gita Press and Drik Panchang: “jai Lakshmi Ramana, shri Lakshmi Ramana”). Variants: “boodho”/“boodha brahman”, “darsh” for “daras”, “in par” and “tinki vipatti hari” in verse 3, “deenhon”/“deeno”, and “sawaya” for “savayo”. The last verse differs most: Bhakti Bharat ends “riddhi-siddhi sukh-sampatti sahaj roop paave”, and Drik Panchang ends with a verse naming Shivanand. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
