Om Jai Lakshmi Mata: Lakshmi aarti lyrics with meaning
The aarti most homes sing after the Diwali Lakshmi puja and on Friday evenings: eight short verses, given here in Hindi, in English letters and with a plain meaning, with the simple way to do the aarti.
Listen: Lakshmi Aarti: Om Jai Lakshmi Mata
A computer-voiced recitation over a soft aarti rhythm of claps, bell and manjira, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What this aarti is
An aarti is the song sung while a lamp is waved before the deity at the end of a puja. “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata” is the best-known aarti of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, grace and well-being. It is sung in the same tune family as “Om Jai Jagdish Hare”, so most people pick it up after hearing it once.
The verses praise Lakshmi as the one mother behind Uma, Rama and Brahmani, recall that she rose from the ocean of milk with the fourteen treasures, and say plainly what she brings: a home where good qualities gather and the mind does not panic. Its author is not known; it is a traditional North Indian aarti handed down in families.
When it is sung
- Diwali night: after the Lakshmi–Ganesh puja, right after the Ganesh aarti. See the Diwali puja vidhi.
- Dhanteras and Sharad Purnima: the other two great Lakshmi evenings of the year.
- Fridays: Friday is Lakshmi's day; many homes sing it with the evening lamp, often after the Lakshmi Chalisa.
- Any new beginning: a new shop, a new home, a new account book.
How to do the aarti, step by step
You need no priest. Aarti is the closing part of any puja, but it can also be done on its own, morning or evening, in about five minutes.
- Wash your hands and face and stand or sit before a picture or murti of Lakshmi.
- Prepare a plate (thali) with a ghee diya or a piece of camphor, a little roli and rice, a flower and a sweet or kheel-batashe.
- Light the diya or camphor. If someone can, they ring a small bell or clap along while everyone sings.
- Sing the aarti below and slowly wave the plate clockwise in front of the deity. A common household way: four times at the feet, twice at the middle, once at the face, then seven times around the whole form.
- After the last verse, circle a little water around the plate and set it down.
- Everyone takes the aarti: hold both palms briefly over the flame and touch them to your eyes and head.
- Share the sweet as prasad.
Families sing in many tunes and some words differ from house to house. Sing it the way your family does; the feeling matters more than the exact wording.

Questions
Should the Ganesh aarti come before the Lakshmi aarti?
Yes, in the usual order. Ganesha is worshipped first in every puja, so on Diwali families sing Jai Ganesh Deva first and then Om Jai Lakshmi Mata.
Is it “Hari Vishnu Vidhata” or “Har Vishnu Vidhata”?
Both are sung. Printed texts usually have “Hari Vishnu Vidhata”; some families sing “Har”, which reads as Shiva (Har), Vishnu and Brahma (Vidhata) together serving the Goddess. Either is fine.
Can I do the aarti without camphor or a bell?
Yes. A single diya is enough, and clapping along works as well as a bell. If you have nothing at all, singing with folded hands is still an aarti.
How long does it take?
About four to five minutes with the refrain after every verse.
Text and sources
The Hindi text is a traditional, public-domain aarti. Every line was checked against two independent published texts (Drik Panchang and Dekho Panchang), which agree line for line apart from spelling. Variants you may meet: “nisdin” for “nishidin”, “Har” for “Hari” in the refrain, “jo koi nar gata” for “jo koi jan gata”, and in verse 4 “tanhi mein hain sadgun aata”. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
