Listen: Shani Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Fast recitation, full text (3 min)

The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.

Who Shani Dev is, and what the chalisa is

Shani Dev is the deity of the planet Saturn. The Puranas tell that he is the son of Surya, the Sun, and of Chhaya, the “shadow” wife, and a brother of Yama, the lord of death and justice. He is pictured dark-skinned, dressed in black or deep blue, riding a crow or a vulture, with a slow, steady gaze. His names, several of which the chalisa lists, describe him: Manda and Shanaishchara, “the slow mover” (Saturn takes about thirty years to circle the zodiac), Sauri and Bhanu-putra, “son of the Sun”, Konastha, “the one at the corner”.

In Jyotish, Saturn is the planet of time, patience, discipline and the fruits of one's own actions, which is why Shani is often called the judge of karma. He is feared for his long, testing periods such as Sade Sati, but tradition remembers him as fair rather than cruel: he gives what has been earned, and he is gentle with the honest and the humble.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Shani Chalisa opens with two dohas, the first to Ganesha, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with a doha. The chaupais describe Shani's form and names, then tell how his hard periods touched even the greatest: Rama's exile, King Vikramaditya, Harishchandra and Nala, Ganesha's head, the Pandavas. They end with the old Jyotish lore of his seven mounts and four “feet” of gold, silver, copper and iron. The last chaupai names the poet, Ramsundar (“Ram Sundar, the Lord's servant”), and the closing doha says that “Vimal” prepared the text; nothing more is known about either. It is a traditional devotional text, printed without any author's claim in booklets and collections across North India.

Many families recite it on Saturdays, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Shani Chalisa?

The last chaupai names the poet: “Kahat Ram Sundar prabhu dasa”, Ramsundar, the Lord's servant. The closing doha adds that “Vimal” prepared the text. Nothing more is known about either; it is a traditional hymn that belongs to everyone.

Why does the chalisa tell so many stories of hardship?

Its message is that Shani's periods come to everyone, even to Rama, Shiva's family and the Pandavas, and that they pass. The stories of Vikramaditya and Nala also end with the king's fortune restored.

What are Shani's seven mounts and four “feet”?

They are old Jyotish lore, given in chaupais 27 to 35: the animal and the metal (gold, silver, copper or iron) said to describe the tone of a Saturn period. They are part of the traditional text, not a forecast for any one person; your own chart is a better guide.

Is the Shani Chalisa connected with Saturn in my chart?

In Jyotish, Shani Dev is the deity of Saturn, so the two are often mentioned together, especially during Sade Sati. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result. To see where Saturn sits in your own chart, open your free Kundli.

Text and sources

The Shani Chalisa is a traditional, public-domain devotional text. Every line was compared across four published versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), Amar Ujala (amarujala.com), Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org) and Sanskrit Documents (sanskritdocuments.org; the same text as Bharat Discovery). The two opening dohas, forty chaupais and the closing doha are in all four. Where they differ we follow the reading most of them share, or the one that keeps the metre.

Variants: ch. 4 hiy … damke (also hiye … damkai); ch. 8 hvain (one havain); ch. 9 होई (also होइ); ch. 12 Lakhanahin (also Lashanahin); ch. 16 darvaayo (one darvaay); ch. 17 telihin (also telahin); ch. 22 vilokat (two have the misprint volokat); ch. 27 sujaana (one sajaana); ch. 33 चाँदी (also चाँदि); ch. 35 swarn sarva sukh (two repeat sarva sarva, which breaks the metre); ch. 37 nashi bali (two read nashib bali). Closing doha: keenhon ‘Vimal’ taiyaar (Bharat Discovery, Sanskrit Documents); Bhakti Bharat and Amar Ujala read ki hon bhakt taiyaar (“let devotees be ready”), which looks like a later smoothing of the name. Bharat Discovery and Sanskrit Documents add one more doha, about the hymn of King Dasharatha to Shani rewritten by “Lalita”; it introduces a different text and is left out. Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
