Listen: Sheetla Mata Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Sheetla Mata is, and what the chalisa is

Sheetla (Shitala, “the cool one”) is a mother goddess worshipped in villages and towns across North and West India, Bengal and Nepal. She is pictured riding a donkey, holding a broom, a winnowing basket and a pot of cool water: the tools of a clean home. For centuries families have turned to her when a child had a fever or the pox, praying that the heat would cool; the Skanda Purana praises her in a short hymn, and her best-known festival is Sheetla Ashtami (Basoda), when the stove rests and food cooked the day before is eaten.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Sheetla Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty chaupais and closes with a doha. It praises the Mother's cool radiance, tells how she overcame the demon Visphotak (“eruption”), who was spreading disease among children, and lists her folk names and the five names of her donkey. The poet signs it as Ramsundar, who lived near Prayag on the Ganga; the same name appears in the Ganesh and Shani chalisas.

Like many folk hymns, the chalisa speaks of healing in the language of faith. Its words are devotion, not medical advice: tradition pairs Sheetla's worship with cleanliness and care, and prayer goes alongside a doctor's care, never instead of it. Many families recite it around Sheetla Ashtami, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Sheetla Chalisa?

The poet names himself near the end: Ramsundar, a servant of the Lord from a village near Kakra, east of Prayag on the Ganga. Nothing more is known about him; one online edition prints “Kamal” in his place.

Why does Sheetla Mata ride a donkey and carry a broom?

Her broom, winnowing basket and pot of cool water are the tools of a clean, cool home, and the humble donkey is her mount. The chalisa even lists the donkey's five Sanskrit names: rasabh, khar, Vaishakhnandan, gardabh and “the one who eats durva roots”.

Who is the demon Visphotak in the chalisa?

Visphotak means “eruption”, the blisters of the pox. The chalisa pictures the illness as a demon who entered homes and harmed children until the Mother caught him; he then promised to stay away from clean homes. It is a devotional story, and it carries tradition's old link between Sheetla and cleanliness.

Is the chalisa a cure for illness?

No. Some verses speak of healing in the poet's words of faith, and many families find comfort in them, but prayer is a support alongside proper medical care, never a replacement for it.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across four editions: the Randhir Prakashan print Aarti Chalisa Sangrah (Haridwar, 2000; scanned on archive.org), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com, checked line by line), and sanskritdocuments.org (Bharat Discovery prints the same text). The print and Bhakti Bharat agree closely; Drik Panchang is a separate witness; the sanskritdocuments text is heavily garbled and was used only where it supports one of the others.

Variants: ch. 3 peera (print; others peeda); ch. 5 baal-praan-rakshi (print; Bhakti Bharat misprints praanakshari); ch. 8 dikharaavain (print; also dikhlaavain); ch. 14 musal prahaar (print; others pramaan); ch. 15 cheenha (print; Bhakti Bharat repeats keenha); ch. 16 second half follows Bhakti Bharat and sanskritdocuments, as the print is damaged here; ch. 17 bhabhakat tan sheetal hvai jaihain (print and Drik Panchang; Bhakti Bharat ab bhagatan sheetal bhay jaihaun); ch. 19 (poojan paath maatu…) is in Bhakti Bharat and sanskritdocuments but not in Drik Panchang; ch. 24 dharani (print tarani); ch. 25 trailokya (printed tralokya); ch. 26 the folk names Shedhla, Mahla, Runli, Hrinani and Mandla vary between editions and are obscure; ch. 29 dukh (Bhakti Bharat misprints sukh); ch. 37 Bhanat Raamsundar (print and Drik Panchang; sanskritdocuments Kahat Raam Sundar; Bhakti Bharat Bhagat Kamal); ch. 38 Graam Tivaari Poor (Bhakti Bharat; print Puri Tivaari); ch. 40 follows Bhakti Bharat and sanskritdocuments (print raksha karahu Sheetla maai). Drik Panchang has one opening doha; Bhakti Bharat and sanskritdocuments add a second closing doha, an obscure date line (“bujhe sahasra vikrami…”) that cannot be read with confidence; it is left out. Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
