A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Diwali 2026 Lakshmi Puja at a glance

  • Date: Sunday, 8 November 2026.
  • Amavasya: from 11:28 am on 8 November to 12:32 pm on 9 November; it is running at sunset on 8 November, so the evening puja is on 8 November.
  • Lakshmi Puja muhurta, New Delhi: 5:55 to 7:50 pm, when the fixed sign Vrishabha (Taurus) is rising inside pradosh kaal (sunset 5:31 pm).
  • Nishita (midnight) puja: Simha lagna, 12:25 to 2:42 am that night, kept by some families and temples.
  • How long it takes: about 45 to 60 minutes for the puja below, plus lighting the diyas.

What the Diwali puja is

On the new-Moon night of Kartik, homes across India worship Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, grace and well-being, together with Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, who is always worshipped first. Many families also worship Kuber, the treasurer of the gods (honoured especially on Dhanteras, two days earlier), and Saraswati, and businesses open new account books (bahi-khata or chopda pujan).

The puja is done after sunset, in pradosh, ideally while a fixed (sthira) sign is rising, because tradition holds that what is begun under a fixed sign stays. The vidhi below is a complete, simple home puja (the panchopachara, five offerings) that anyone can do; a priest's full shodashopachara puja has sixteen steps and is equally right.

Computed with the Sunyra engine (sidereal Lahiri), the same method as the Diwali pages of our Lens; the New Delhi numbers match it. If you cannot do the puja inside the window, any time in pradosh on Amavasya evening is traditionally accepted.

Puja samagri

  • A low stool (chowki) with a red or yellow cloth; images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha (Ganesha on Lakshmi's left as you face them, that is, on her right side).
  • A kalash (copper or brass pot) with water, a coconut, five mango or betel leaves, a coin and a red thread.
  • Roli, haldi, akshat (unbroken rice), chandan, flowers and a lotus if you can find one, durva grass for Ganesha.
  • A large ghee diya that can burn through the night, small diyas for the house, incense, camphor for the aarti.
  • Naivedya: kheel-batashe, sweets (laddoo for Ganesha), fruit, and paan with supari.
  • Coins, jewellery or your account book or ledger to place before Lakshmi; a small bowl of water and a spoon for achaman.

Before the puja

  1. Clean the house during the day; make a rangoli at the door and keep the main door open in the evening.
  2. Bathe before sunset and wear clean or new clothes. Set the chowki facing east or north, with the kalash on its right and the big diya on its right too.
  3. The family sits facing the deities. The eldest (or anyone who knows the mantras) leads; everyone else repeats or simply joins with folded hands.

The puja, step by step, with mantras

Each step gives its mantra in Sanskrit, the same in English letters, and its meaning. If a mantra is hard, say its meaning in your own words with a calm mind: that is a complete offering too.

Meaning: I do not know how to invite you, nor how to bid you farewell, nor even how to worship you properly: forgive me, O Supreme Goddess.

The aartis and the chalisa

After Karpuragauram (step 10), most North Indian homes sing two aartis with the burning camphor: first Jai Ganesh Deva, then Om Jai Lakshmi Mata. Both pages have the full words in Hindi and English letters with the meaning of every verse, so the whole family can sing along from a phone.

Many families also read the Lakshmi Chalisa before the aarti, or later in the night while the big diya burns. It takes about ten minutes.

After the puja

  1. Light diyas from the puja flame and place them through the house: the doorway, the kitchen, the tulsi, the windows and the roof.
  2. Share the prasad: kheel-batashe and sweets, first to the family and then to neighbours.
  3. Many families keep the big diya burning through the night and leave the deities in place until the next morning; the kalash water is sprinkled through the house the next day.
  4. Light firecrackers only if you wish and safely; a quiet house full of lamps is fully Diwali.

Text and sources

Dates, the muhurta and every time are computed with the Sunyra engine and move on to the next Diwali by themselves the day after; for 2026 they are the same numbers as the Diwali pages of Sunyra Lens. The mantras are traditional, public-domain Sanskrit verses used in household puja (the pavitrikaran and kalash verses, the Ganesha dhyana, the Lakshmi dhyana, Lakshmi Gayatri, the Kuber mantra, Karpuragauram and the kshama prarthana), checked against two printed puja manuals; the transliterations and meanings are our own.
