In short: The dashamsa, or D10, divides every sign into ten parts of 3° each. BPHS assigns it to one's deeds and standing (mahat phala — great results — in many translations), and modern astrologers use it as the main divisional chart for career. Its 10th house, its ascendant, and the strength there of the birth chart's 10th lord and of the Amatyakaraka are read for the shape of a working life. It needs a birth time accurate to within a few minutes.
What the dashamsa is
Daśāṃśa means "tenth part". Each 30° sign is divided into ten divisions of 3°, giving 120 around the zodiac. BPHS (ch. 6 in Santhanam's numbering) includes it among the sixteen divisional charts (shodashavarga), and ch. 7 discusses how the divisions are used. Where the navamsa is read for the spouse and inner strength, the dashamsa is read for action and professional life.
BPHS also names presiding deities for the ten divisions — the guardians of the ten directions (Indra, Agni, Yama and the others) in odd signs, in reverse order in even signs. Some astrologers read these deities for the flavour of the work; most use the chart's houses and lords.
How to calculate it
| Sign | First dashamsa starts from |
|---|---|
| Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) | the same sign |
| Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) | the 9th sign from it |
Then count forward one sign for each 3°.
Example 1. The Sun at 14° Leo. Leo is odd, so its dashamsas start from Leo. 14° ÷ 3° = 4.67, the 5th division: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius.
Example 2. Saturn at 22° Cancer. Cancer is even, so its dashamsas start from the 9th sign from Cancer, which is Pisces. 22° ÷ 3° = 7.33, the 8th division: Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra. Saturn is exalted in the D10 — a pattern read as an ordinary birth-chart placement with strong professional staying power.

How it is read
- The D10 ascendant and its lord — the overall direction of a career and how a person carries themselves at work.
- The 10th house of the D10 and its lord — the profession itself and its visibility.
- The birth chart's 10th lord in the D10 — if it gains dignity (own sign, exaltation) the career promise is read as strong; if it loses it, as needing more work to realise.
- The Amatyakaraka in the D10 — its dignity and house refine the field.
- The Sun and Saturn in the D10 — the Sun for authority and recognition, Saturn for endurance and long service.
- Planets in the D10's kendras — angular planets are read as prominent in the working life.
A useful working principle: the birth chart shows the promise, the D10 shows its delivery. Read them together, never the D10 alone.
Timing with the D10
Many astrologers check the D10 placement of each dasha lord. A dasha lord well placed in the D10 (in a kendra or trikona, or in good dignity) is read as a period in which work goes well; one placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th of the D10 as a period that asks for care or brings change. This is a modern refinement, widely taught but not set out verse by verse in BPHS.
Birth-time sensitivity
Each dashamsa is 3° wide, so the D10 ascendant changes on average every 12 minutes, sometimes faster. A birth time rounded to the nearest half hour may well give the wrong D10 ascendant and houses. The D10 signs of the slower planets, by contrast, are reliable even with an approximate time; the Moon changes dashamsa about every five and a half hours.
Variants
Some modern authors have proposed alternative dashamsa calculations (for example, a version in which all signs start from the same sign, or schemes tied to Jaimini rules). The method above is the one given in BPHS and used by most software, including ours.
FAQ
Is the D10 more important than the 10th house? No. The 10th house of the birth chart is the foundation; the D10 refines it.
Can the D10 tell me which job to take? It can describe tendencies and periods. It cannot weigh salaries, skills or opportunities, and it is not career advice.
What if a planet is debilitated in the D10? It is read as a function that needs more effort at work. Look for its strength in the birth chart and the navamsa before drawing conclusions.
