In short: In the Jaimini system, the planet that has travelled furthest through its sign is the Atmakaraka (the self), and the one with the second-highest degree is the Amatyakaraka (AmK), the "minister" who serves it. Astrologers read the AmK for career, counsel and the means of livelihood: the kind of work through which a person tends to fulfil their purpose. Its nature, sign, house and navamsa are read together with the 10th house, which remains the main indicator of profession.

How to find it

Take the degree of each planet within its sign, ignoring the sign itself. Rank the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn (and, in the eight-karaka scheme of BPHS ch. 32, Rahu, whose degree is counted backwards as 30° minus its position). The highest is the Atmakaraka; the second highest is the Amatyakaraka.

Example. Sun 21°, Moon 8°, Mars 27°, Mercury 3°, Jupiter 14°, Venus 25°, Saturn 11°, Rahu 17° (counted as 13°). Mars is the Atmakaraka (27°); Venus the Amatyakaraka (25°). The full table of karakas, and the dispute over seven or eight, is on our Darakaraka page.

Sunyra's kundli uses the eight-karaka scheme for the Amatyakaraka in its career reading, and shows the karakas in both schemes.

Why "minister"?

Amātya means a king's minister or counsellor. The image is a court: the Atmakaraka is the king, the soul's own purpose, and the Amatyakaraka is the trusted minister who carries that purpose into the world. Read this way, the AmK describes the work that best serves who you are, rather than the job title you happen to hold.

How it is read

  • The planet's nature — the main theme (below).
  • Its sign and dignity — an exalted or own-sign AmK is read as capable and well resourced; a debilitated one as gaining skill through effort.
  • Its house from the ascendant — the arena through which work flows: the 10th for public role, the 6th for service, the 7th for partnership and clients, the 12th for work abroad or behind the scenes.
  • Its navamsa sign — refines the field.
  • Its relationship to the Atmakaraka — conjunction, mutual aspect or friendship is read as work that feels aligned with one's purpose.
  • Its role in the D10 — see our dashamsa guide.

Each planet as Amatyakaraka

Traditional themes, read as inclinations rather than prescriptions.

Sun. Authority, leadership and public responsibility: administration, government, management, roles where one carries a name or a mandate. Works best with visible ownership of results.

Moon. The public, care and nourishment: hospitality, food, health support, education of the young, customer-facing work, anything that meets people's needs. Often changeable, with more than one phase of career.

Mars. Action, protection and technical skill: engineering, defence and police, surgery, sport, property and construction, entrepreneurship that needs courage. Works best with clear goals and room to act.

Mercury. Communication, trade and analysis: commerce, accounting, writing and media, data and technology, teaching of skills. Often more than one line of work at once.

Jupiter. Counsel, knowledge and ethics: teaching, law, finance and advisory work, religious or charitable roles, management that guides others.

Venus. Beauty, relationships and comfort: the arts, design, fashion, entertainment, hospitality, luxury goods, diplomacy and negotiation.

Saturn. Structure, endurance and service: large institutions, industry, logistics, agriculture, law enforcement and administration, long careers that build slowly. Recognition tends to grow with time.

Rahu (eight-karaka scheme). The new, foreign or unconventional: technology, international work, media, research, politics and fields that did not exist a generation ago.

Amatyakaraka and the 10th house

When the AmK and the 10th lord point in the same direction — say, Mercury as AmK and a Gemini or Virgo 10th house — the reading is straightforward and the theme strong. When they differ, astrologers usually read the 10th house for the role and the AmK for the motive or method within it: a Venus AmK with a Saturn-ruled 10th might work in a large institution but in its creative or relational side.

Timing

The mahadasha or antardasha of the Amatyakaraka is one of the periods astrologers examine for professional change and advancement, alongside periods of the 10th lord and of planets in the 10th (see career in the birth chart). In Jaimini's chara dasha, signs connected with the AmK are studied for the same purpose.

FAQ

Is the Amatyakaraka more important than the 10th lord? No. The 10th house and its lord are the primary indicators of profession; the AmK refines them.

What if the Amatyakaraka is debilitated? It is read as skill gained through effort, or a field that asks for patience. Look for neecha bhanga (cancellation of debilitation) and for its strength in the navamsa.

Can the Amatyakaraka change? No; it is fixed at birth. Its expression develops through the dashas.

Why do two websites give me different Amatyakarakas? Usually because one uses seven karakas and the other eight (including Rahu). Ask which scheme a reading uses.
