In short: Magha is the tenth nakshatra, spanning the first 13°20′ of sidereal Leo. Its deities are the Pitris, the ancestors, and its ruling planet is Ketu. Its name means "the mighty" or "the bountiful", and its symbol is a throne. Magha is the energy of lineage: dignity, inheritance, tradition, leadership and the sense of standing on the shoulders of those who came before. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be proud, generous, respectful of tradition and naturally authoritative.

The story: the Fathers

The Pitris are the honoured dead — the ancestors who have gone ahead and now dwell in their own world, watching over their descendants and receiving their offerings. The Rigveda addresses them directly in hymn 10.15, inviting the Fathers, "the lower, the higher and the middle", to come to the sacrifice, sit on the sacred grass and accept what is offered. Yama, the first of the dead (see Bharani), prepared their path and rules their world (Rigveda 10.14).

Honouring the ancestors runs through Indian life. Every year, in the dark fortnight known as Pitru Paksha, families offer water, sesame and food (shraddha and tarpana) to their forebears. A day in that fortnight when the Moon is in Magha is considered especially fitting for these rites.

Magha's throne is the seat that is inherited, not seized: the place of the elder, the head of the family, the custodian of a tradition. Its message is that real authority comes with responsibility to those before and after.

In the sky

Magha's chief star is Regulus, "the little king", the bright star at the heart of the Lion, which lies almost exactly on the ecliptic. The curve of stars around it, often called the Sickle, completes the throne. In Arabic astronomy the Lion's forehead stars, including Regulus, formed the tenth lunar mansion, al-Jabhah. The month of Magha is named after the nakshatra near which its full Moon falls.

The nature of Magha

Muhurta texts class Magha as ugra, fierce — suited to bold, decisive acts, and traditionally avoided for gentle beginnings. Its temperament is rakshasa, fierce. Ketu rules it, and it lies in the Sun's sign Leo. The pairing is striking: Ketu is detachment and the past; the Sun is kingship and the self. Magha holds both — a royal dignity rooted in the ancestors, and a pull toward something beyond worldly status.

Magha's core qualities are dignity, pride, generosity, loyalty to family and tradition, and a natural expectation of respect. It is often ceremonious, attached to ritual and heritage, and drawn to leadership.

The start of Magha, where Cancer becomes Leo, is one of the three gandanta junctions between water and fire signs, traditionally treated as sensitive.

Strengths

  • Dignity. Magha carries itself with natural authority.
  • Loyalty to roots. It honours family, lineage and tradition.
  • Generosity. Like a good king, it gives and protects.
  • Leadership. It takes responsibility for those in its care.

Challenges

  • Pride. It may expect deference or find criticism hard.
  • Attachment to status or the past. Tradition can become a weight.
  • Ketu's detachment. It may feel aloof, or strangely dissatisfied with worldly success.

Magha's growth often lies in serving the lineage rather than being served by it — and in recognising that the ancestors wanted their descendants to be free.

The Moon in Magha

With the Moon here, the emotional nature is proud, warm and loyal, with deep feelings about family and heritage. These people often feel a strong bond with a parent or grandparent, and they may carry family responsibilities or traditions. Ketu's rulership adds an intuitive, sometimes detached, quality.

The ascendant and other planets in Magha

A Magha ascendant tends to give a dignified bearing and a commanding presence. The Sun in Magha (roughly the second half of August) is in its own sign and moolatrikona and gives natural leadership. Ketu in its own nakshatra here can give spiritual or ancestral gifts. Saturn here, in the Sun's sign, may carry heavy family duty. Jupiter here gives a respected, traditional wisdom.

  • Pada 4 (Cancer navamsa). Emotional and devoted to family; the most ancestral and protective part of Magha.

Reading Magha in a chart

When a planet or the Moon sits in Magha, three things shape how it works. First, Ketu, the nakshatra lord: its house and sign show where the planet's results are ultimately delivered, and a well-placed Ketu gives Magha's ancestral dignity a spiritual depth. Second, the Sun, the sign lord: a strong Sun lets Magha's authority shine; a weak one makes the throne feel heavy. Third, the house Magha occupies: in the 10th it often means a career connected with a family name or an institution; in the 4th, a deep attachment to ancestral home and land; in the 9th, inherited faith or a lineage of teachers. In the Vimshottari dasha, any planet in Magha gives part of its results in the sub-periods of Ketu.

In relationships and matching

Magha is a rakshasa gana nakshatra, with the rat as its yoni and Antya (Kapha) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Purva Phalguni, the other rat nakshatra; the cat nakshatras (Punarvasu and Ashlesha) are the rat's traditional enemy.

In everyday terms, Magha partners are loyal, generous and protective, and they bring a strong sense of family. They need respect and appreciation, and a partner who honours their roots.

Career and work

Magha favours leadership and inheritance: government and administration, politics, management, family businesses, law, history and archaeology, genealogy, ritual and religious work, and roles that preserve or lead institutions.

Health as wellbeing

Magha lies in Leo, traditionally linked with the heart and spine in Western astrology and the belly in Vedic texts. As wellbeing, Magha benefits from rest from responsibility, warmth and joyful activity. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

The dasha connection

A person born with the Moon in Magha begins life in the Ketu mahadasha, seven years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. Venus's twenty-year dasha follows, then the Sun's six (BPHS ch. 46). Magha begins the second of the three nine- nakshatra cycles of the Vimshottari system, as Ashwini begins the first and Mula the third.

Muhurta: choosing a time

As an ugra nakshatra, Magha is traditionally reserved for bold or forceful actions and avoided for marriage and other gentle beginnings, though it is considered appropriate for rites honouring the ancestors. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.

Traditional practice

For Magha the tradition centres on the ancestors: offering water and sesame in tarpana, observing shraddha rites, and keeping family memory alive. For Ketu, the nakshatra lord, worship of Ganesha is common. Simply learning and telling the stories of one's own family is, in the spirit of Magha, a practice of its own. These are traditional practices, not promises.

Living with Magha

Magha people are often the keepers of a family's history, the ones who remember birthdays and recipes, who organise the gathering, who feel responsible for the name. That is a gift, and it can become a burden. A healthy Magha honours the throne without being trapped on it — keeping what is valuable in tradition, letting the rest go, and passing on something better than it received.

A note for Western readers

Western astrology does not use the nakshatras but treats Regulus, at about 0° of tropical Virgo (it crossed from Leo in 2011–12), as one of the most important fixed stars, traditionally associated with royalty, honour and success — and with the warning that pride can bring a fall.
