In short: Leo is the fixed fire sign, ruled by the Sun. It is the energy of the heart and of self-expression: warmth, pride, generosity, creativity, leadership and the wish to be seen and to shine. Leo people tend to be big-hearted, loyal and dignified, and to need an audience — or at least appreciation — to do their best work.

The lion in myth and sky

The constellation Leo looks like what it is named for: a crouching lion, its head and mane traced by a curve of stars often called the Sickle. In Greek myth it is the Nemean lion, whose hide no weapon could pierce. Its killing was the first of the twelve labours of Heracles: when his arrows bounced off, he cornered the lion in its cave and strangled it, then wore its skin as armour for the rest of his life (Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 2.5.1). The story is about meeting raw power and making it your own.

In Indian tradition the lion is Simha, the mount of the goddess Durga and the form of Narasimha, the man-lion avatara of Vishnu, who emerged from a pillar to protect the devotee Prahlada. Varahamihira records the Greek-derived name Leya, from Leon.

The brightest star in Leo is Regulus, "the little king", at the lion's heart, which sits almost exactly on the ecliptic. It is the chief star of the nakshatra Magha, "the great" or "the bountiful", whose deities are the ancestors (Pitris) and whose symbol is a throne. The lion's hindquarters and tail form Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni — the front and back legs of a bed — the tail star being Denebola.

Two zodiacs, one sign

In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Leo from about 23 July to 22 August, the height of northern summer. In the sidereal zodiac the Sun is in Simha from about 17 August to 16 September. Many Western Leos are Vedic Cancer, and many Vedic Leos are Western Virgo.

What Leo means

In Vedic astrology

BPHS ch. 4 and Brihat Jataka ch. 1 describe Leo as a fiery, fixed, masculine sign, rising head first, strong by day, with its direction in the east. It is the belly of the cosmic person and the natural 5th house: intelligence, creativity, children, devotion, past merit (purva punya) and the joy of play.

The Sun rules Leo, with its moolatrikona in the first 20°. No planet is exalted or debilitated here. It is a royal sign: the Sun in Leo gives authority, and the nakshatra Magha at its start is associated with thrones, lineage and the dignity of ancestors.

Leo is the first of the six signs that classical texts call strong by day (Leo through Pisces); the six from Aries to Cancer, with Sagittarius and Capricorn, are strong at night. A planet in a day-strong sign is traditionally given a little more weight in a daytime birth. In the Vedic solar calendar the Sun's month in Simha is also a season of festivals in several regions — Onam in Kerala falls in the month of Chingam, which is the Sun's month in Leo.

The beginning of Leo, where Ashlesha ends and Magha begins, is a gandanta junction between water and fire, traditionally treated as sensitive.

In Western astrology

Ptolemy assigns Leo to the Sun as domicile. Saturn is in detriment here, opposite its own sign Aquarius — the constraint of duty against the joy of self-expression; modern astrologers add Uranus's detriment. In the Hellenistic scheme the fire signs are ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night, with Saturn participating.

Modern Western astrology reads Leo as the archetype of the creative self: the performer, the leader, the parent, the child at play, the person who gives from the heart.

Strengths

Leo gives warmth, generosity, courage, loyalty and a natural sense of dignity. It inspires others, brings joy into a room, and is fiercely protective of the people it loves. Leo's creativity is wholehearted: it puts itself into what it makes. Its leadership is often at its best when it lifts others up.

Challenges

The shadow of radiance is pride. Leo may need too much recognition, take criticism hard, dominate rather than lead, or find it difficult to admit mistakes. When it feels unseen it can become dramatic or withdrawn. Its growth often comes through learning that its worth does not depend on applause — and that generosity includes sharing the stage.

In relationships

Leo loves loyally, warmly and openly. It wants to adore and be adored, and it shows love through attention, gifts, celebration and protection. It needs a partner who appreciates it and who has their own light. Its opposite sign, Aquarius (the 7th from Leo), describes the partnership lesson: friendship, equality and making room for the other's independence.

In career and work

Leo suits work with visibility and responsibility: leadership and management, government, the performing arts, entertainment and media, teaching (especially children), politics, luxury and design, and any role where someone has to carry authority with warmth. Leo does its best work when it believes in what it represents.

Health as wellbeing

Leo is the belly in the Vedic cosmic person and the heart, spine and upper back in Western astrology. As wellbeing, it benefits from joyful exercise, creative outlets, sunlight in good measure, and rest from performing. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

How Leo changes

  • As Sun sign: the Sun is at home, so the core identity is strong, warm and expressive.
  • As Moon sign: the emotional nature is proud and generous; the person feels safe when they are appreciated and can be themselves.
  • As ascendant: the person tends to have a dignified, noticeable presence. The Sun is lagna lord; Mars, ruling the 4th and 9th, is the yogakaraka. Jupiter (lord of the 5th and 8th) and the Moon (lord of the 12th) are read carefully.
  • By nakshatra. Magha (0°–13°20′) gives dignity, tradition and a link to ancestors; Purva Phalguni (13°20′–26°40′) gives pleasure, creativity and romance; Uttara Phalguni's first pada (26°40′–30°) gives loyalty and a sense of contract.
  • By planets in it. The Sun here is strong and confident; the Moon here is warm and proud; Mars here is courageous and commanding; Saturn here may struggle with authority or carry heavy responsibility early.

Leo in every chart

Everyone has Leo somewhere in the chart. The house it occupies is where you want to shine, create and be recognised. Leo on the 10th points to a visible career; on the 5th, creativity and children; on the 11th, a social circle where you take the lead.

Following the ruler

The Sun, ruler of Leo, is the planet to follow. Wherever the Sun sits by sign and house shows where Leo's light is finally aimed: the Sun in the 10th sends it into public life, in the 9th into teaching or faith, in the 12th into private, inward or foreign work. A strong Sun makes every Leo placement more confident; a strained Sun asks them to build self-worth from within.

Sign aspects (Jaimini)

In the Jaimini system (rashi drishti, Jaimini Sutras ch. 1), fixed signs aspect the movable signs except the movable sign next to them. So Leo aspects Libra, Capricorn and Aries, but not Cancer. Jaimini astrologers use these sign aspects in chara dasha and in judging how houses influence each other.

Vedic and Western views compared

The traditions agree on Leo's nature and the Sun's rulership. They differ on the zodiac (sidereal Leo begins about 24° after tropical Leo) and on the body (the belly in Vedic texts; the heart in Western ones — where Vedic astrology gives the heart to Cancer). Neither tradition places an exaltation or fall in Leo.
