In short: Uttara Phalguni is the twelfth nakshatra, spanning 26°40′ of sidereal Leo to 10° of Virgo. Its deity is Aryaman, the god of contracts, hospitality, friendship and marriage, and its ruling planet is the Sun. Its symbol is the back legs of a bed — the part that bears the weight. Uttara Phalguni is the energy of commitment: keeping one's word, honouring agreements, helping friends and building partnerships that last. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be reliable, generous, principled and service-minded.

The story: Aryaman, keeper of agreements

Aryaman is one of the Adityas, the sons of Aditi, often named alongside Mitra and Varuna as the gods who uphold the bonds between people. Where Mitra governs friendship and Varuna cosmic law, Aryaman governs the customs that hold society together: hospitality, the duties of host and guest, the alliances between families, and above all marriage. The great wedding hymn of the Rigveda (10.85) calls on Aryaman to bless the bride and groom and keep them together into old age.

In the Bhagavad Gita (10.29) Krishna says, "Among the ancestors, I am Aryaman," for Aryaman was also counted as chief of the Pitris, linking this nakshatra to its neighbour Magha.

Uttara Phalguni is also remembered as a wedding star. In the Valmiki Ramayana's Bala Kanda, King Janaka sets the marriage of Sita and Rama for the day when the Moon will be in Uttara Phalguni, a day which, the text says, the wise praise for weddings.

In the sky

Uttara Phalguni's stars are Denebola (β Leonis), at the tip of the Lion's tail, and the faint 93 Leonis. With Purva Phalguni's stars they complete the four legs of the bed. In Arabic astronomy Denebola alone formed the twelfth lunar mansion, al-Sarfah, "the changer", because the weather was said to turn when it set at dawn. The month of Phalguna is named after the two Phalgunis.

The nature of Uttara Phalguni

Muhurta texts class Uttara Phalguni as dhruva, fixed — the best class for undertakings meant to last, especially marriage, house-building and foundations. Its temperament is manushya, human. The Sun rules it, giving integrity, leadership and a sense of duty, and it spans the Sun's Leo and Mercury's Virgo.

Uttara Phalguni's core qualities are reliability, generosity, helpfulness, honesty and a talent for partnership. Where Purva Phalguni rests and enjoys, Uttara Phalguni commits and serves. It is the friend who shows up, the colleague who keeps promises, the partner who stays.

Strengths

  • Reliability. Uttara Phalguni keeps its word.
  • Generosity and hospitality. Aryaman's spirit makes it a natural host and helper.
  • Leadership through service. The Sun gives it authority; Virgo gives it usefulness.
  • Partnership. It builds stable relationships and alliances.

Challenges

  • Over-commitment. It may say yes to too much out of duty.
  • Pride in its reliability. It can be hurt when others do not reciprocate.
  • Rigidity. Fixed in nature, it may resist renegotiating agreements that no longer serve.

Uttara Phalguni's growth often lies in making agreements with itself as carefully as with others.

The Moon in Uttara Phalguni

With the Moon here, the emotional nature is steady, kind and loyal. In the Leo pada the Moon is proud and warm; in the Virgo padas it is modest, practical and helpful. These people feel secure in stable relationships and good routines, and they care for others through practical help.

The ascendant and other planets in Uttara Phalguni

An Uttara Phalguni ascendant tends to give a pleasant, honest face and a helpful manner. The Sun in its own nakshatra here (roughly the second half of September) is dignified and principled. Mercury in the Virgo padas is in its own sign and practical. Venus in the Virgo padas is debilitated in sign and learns devotion through service. Jupiter here gives an ethical, generous wisdom.

Reading Uttara Phalguni in a chart

When a planet or the Moon sits in Uttara Phalguni, look first at the Sun, the nakshatra lord: its strength shows how much integrity and authority the nakshatra can express. Then look at the sign lord — the Sun again for the first pada, Mercury for the other three — which shows whether commitment is expressed through leadership or through skilled service. Finally, consider the house: Uttara Phalguni in the 7th is one of the classic indications of a committed, contractual partnership; in the 10th, a career of public trust; in the 6th, dedicated daily service; in the 11th, loyal friendships and alliances. A planet here often gives some of its results in the Sun's sub-periods.

In relationships and matching

Uttara Phalguni is a manushya gana nakshatra, with the cow as its yoni and Adi (Vata) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Uttara Bhadrapada, the other cow nakshatra; the tiger nakshatras (Chitra and Vishakha) are the cow's traditional enemy.

In everyday terms, Uttara Phalguni partners are loyal, dependable and committed. They value marriage and partnership highly, and they need a partner who honours agreements as they do.

Career and work

Uttara Phalguni favours work built on agreements and service: management and administration, law and contracts, human resources, social work, hospitality, counselling, government, charitable work, and roles of trusted responsibility. Its Virgo padas suit health care and skilled service.

Health as wellbeing

Uttara Phalguni spans Leo (the heart and spine in Western astrology) and Virgo (digestion). As wellbeing, it benefits from rest from duty, regular routines and letting others help. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

The dasha connection

A person born with the Moon in Uttara Phalguni begins life in the Sun mahadasha, six years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. The Moon's ten-year dasha follows, then Mars's seven (BPHS ch. 46).

Muhurta: choosing a time

Uttara Phalguni is one of the four dhruva (fixed) nakshatras, with Rohini, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada, and is traditionally among the preferred nakshatras for marriage, as the Ramayana's choice for Sita and Rama suggests. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.

Traditional practice

For Uttara Phalguni the tradition honours Aryaman through hospitality itself: welcoming guests, keeping promises, supporting friends. For the Sun, the nakshatra lord, it recommends offering water to the rising Sun and showing respect to one's father and elders. These are traditional practices, not promises.

Living with Uttara Phalguni

Uttara Phalguni people are often the backbone of their families, workplaces and communities. They are good at holding things up. Their wisdom is to choose their commitments well, renew them consciously, and remember that a contract has two sides: they too deserve the reliability they give.

A note for Western readers

Western astrology does not use the nakshatras. Denebola lies at about 21° of tropical Virgo; Western fixed-star lore gave it a cautionary reputation, associated with swift judgement and public disfavour.
