In short: Venus (Shukra) turns retrograde about every nineteen months for roughly six weeks, as it passes between Earth and the Sun. Astrologers associate the period with re-valuing what we love, desire and spend on: second thoughts in relationships, the return of past partners, creative and aesthetic work that goes back to the drawing board, and a cooler eye on money and luxury. The traditional advice is to review and repair rather than begin — many astrologers would not choose this window for a wedding, a big jewellery or art purchase, or a dramatic change of look. In Vedic practice the effect is read through the house Venus crosses from your Moon and your dasha, and a retrograde Venus is counted strong in motion, not weak.

The cycle

Venus retrograde is the rarest of the personal-planet retrogrades. It happens every 584 days on average — Venus's synodic period — and each one lasts about 40 to 43 days. Five of these cycles fit almost exactly into eight years, so Venus retrogrades repeat in nearly the same part of the zodiac every eight years: the retrograde of October–November 2026 echoes the one of October–November 2018.

In the middle of each retrograde Venus passes between Earth and the Sun (its inferior conjunction) and vanishes in the Sun's glare for a few days, then reappears on the other side of the Sun: an evening star becomes a morning star. Ancient skywatchers recorded these disappearances with care — the Babylonian Venus Tablet of Ammisaduqa lists them as omens — and the image of a goddess who descends, vanishes and returns is one many cultures told.

Shukra, the teacher who brings things back

In Indian tradition Venus is Shukra, the guru of the asuras, and the sage who alone knew sanjivani, the art of reviving the dead. The Mahabharata (Adi Parva) tells how the devas sent young Kacha to learn it from him, how Shukra's daughter Devayani fell in love with Kacha, and how Shukra, deceived and grieving, revived his student more than once. It is a story about desire, loyalty and things that come back — a fitting image for a retrograde that so often returns people and feelings we thought were finished.

In Jyotish, Venus signifies love, marriage and the spouse (it is the natural significator, karaka, of the partner, especially in a man's chart in the classical texts), beauty, art, music, comfort, vehicles, luxury, pleasures and the wealth that buys them. BPHS (ch. 3) gives Venus Taurus and Libra as its own signs, exaltation in Pisces and debilitation in Virgo.

Love and relationships

This is where the tradition speaks most clearly. Astrologers associate Venus retrograde with:

  • Second thoughts. Feelings about a partner, or about what we want from love, come up for honest review. That can feel unsettling; it can also be the moment a relationship becomes more truthful.
  • The return of the past. An ex gets in touch; an old attraction reawakens; an unfinished story asks for an ending. Astrologers usually advise listening without rushing — what returns under a retrograde is often there to be understood rather than resumed.
  • Repair over beginnings. Renewing vows, couples' conversations and resolving an old hurt are favoured. New relationships that begin now are traditionally said to need time to show their real nature.
  • Weddings. Many astrologers in both traditions prefer not to fix a wedding date during Venus retrograde if there is a free choice. The firmer Vedic rule, found in muhurta texts such as Muhurta Chintamani, is about combustion: marriages are avoided while Venus is asta (too close to the Sun to be seen), which happens around the middle of each Venus retrograde. If a date is already fixed, astrologers look at the whole muhurta rather than one planet.

Money, value and luxury

Venus also governs value — what we find beautiful and what we will pay for it. Traditional advice for the retrograde:

  • Review the budget for pleasure, beauty, entertainment and gifts; notice spending that soothes rather than satisfies.
  • Big luxury purchases (jewellery, art, designer goods, a new car — Venus is the karaka of vehicles in Jyotish) are traditionally postponed if there is a choice, partly because tastes formed now may change once Venus is direct.
  • Valuations and prices may be revisited: a good time to reassess what your work is worth, renegotiate fees, or sell what you no longer value.

None of this is financial advice; it is the tradition's way of saying check what you value before you pay for it.

Creative, artistic and aesthetic work

Painters, designers, musicians and makers often report that Venus retrograde feels like the drawing board. The tradition associates it with:

  • creative work that stalls, or needs to be reworked or restored;
  • a return to old projects, old styles and early influences — often fruitful;
  • second thoughts about a design, a brand, a portfolio or a look.

Astrologers usually suggest using the period to finish, edit, restore and practise, and to launch new collections, exhibitions or rebrands after Venus turns direct. Many artists find it an honest time for this: what still moves you after a six-week second look is usually worth keeping.

Mood and mind

Astrologically, Venus retrograde is associated with a reflective, sometimes nostalgic mood: a pull towards old songs, old places and old people, and a sharper awareness of what is missing. Some people feel less sociable or less sure of their own attractiveness. These are associations from a tradition of interpretation, not psychological findings, and they are best used as prompts — what do I value, and why? If low mood lingers or deepens, that is a reason to talk to people you trust or a professional, whatever the sky is doing.

Wellbeing and appearance

A popular rule says not to make drastic changes to your appearance — a radical haircut, a new look, cosmetic procedures — while Venus is retrograde, because you may not like the result once Venus is direct. Treat that as a matter of taste and timing. Anything medical, including cosmetic procedures, belongs to professionals and their advice, not to the calendar of a planet.

What to do and what to avoid

Favoured Traditionally postponed if there is a choice
Honest conversations about a relationship Fixing a wedding date (and especially during Venus's combustion)
Reconciling, repairing, renewing commitments Starting a relationship in a hurry
Restoring, editing and finishing creative work Launching a rebrand, a collection or an exhibition
Reviewing budgets for pleasure and luxury Big purchases of jewellery, art or vehicles
Re-pricing your work; selling what you no longer value Dramatic changes of appearance

How it touches your chart

Vedic. Find the house Venus is retrograding through counted from your natal Moon (your rashi), and from your ascendant if you know it. Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts Venus's transit favourable from the Moon in most houses — commonly given as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th — and difficult in the 6th, 7th and 10th; a retrograde slows and repeats those results rather than reversing them. It matters more if you are running Venus's dasha, if Venus rules your ascendant or 7th house, or if it re-crosses a natal planet.

Western. Look at the house it occupies in your chart and any planet it stations on. A station on your natal Venus, Moon, Sun or angles is a classic signature of a significant review.

House by house

Wherever Venus retrogrades in your chart — counted from your Moon sign in Vedic practice, or by house in a Western chart — the tradition reads that area of life as the one under review:

House (from the Moon, or in your chart) What tends to come up for review
1st your look, charm and self-worth — a style rethink rather than a makeover
2nd money, family spending and valuables — review the budget before buying
3rd messages, siblings, hobbies and creative skills — old conversations and half-finished crafts return
4th home, comfort, vehicles and mother — décor and property plans are better drafted than signed
5th romance, creative work and children — old flames and unfinished art resurface
6th work relationships, daily habits and wellbeing routines — smooth office friction patiently
7th marriage and partnership — second thoughts, an ex, or a needed renegotiation of the relationship
8th shared money, intimacy and in-laws — joint finances and trust come up for review
9th beliefs, teachers, travel and long-distance love — plans are revisited rather than booked
10th public image and work in beauty, design or the arts — rebrands and launches tend to wait
11th friends, networks and income — old friends return; gains are reassessed
12th private life, sleep, pleasures and spending — hidden expenses and rest need attention

FAQ

How often is Venus retrograde? About every 19 months, for about six weeks. The next is 3 October – 14 November 2026; the one after, 10 May – 22 June 2028.

Will my ex come back during Venus retrograde? The tradition associates the period with the return of the past, but nothing is guaranteed. If someone does reappear, the advice is to take time before deciding anything.

Can I get married during Venus retrograde? Many astrologers prefer to avoid it if there is a choice, and Vedic muhurta avoids Venus's combustion in particular. If your date is fixed, ask an astrologer to read the whole muhurta; one planet is never the whole picture.

Is it bad to be born with Venus retrograde? No. Vedic astrology counts it strong in motion; Western astrologers often read it as values that are deeply personal and independent of fashion.

Is Venus retrograde a bad time to buy a car? In Jyotish, Venus is the significator of vehicles, so many astrologers suggest waiting if you have a free choice. If you need one, buy it with ordinary care.
