In short: A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it seems to slow down, stop and move backwards through the zodiac for a few weeks; nothing actually reverses, it is an effect of Earth and the planet overtaking each other (what a retrograde is). From 24 October to 13 November 2026 (UTC), Mercury and Venus are retrograde at the same time. Astrologers read the overlap as a strong season of review for the two things these planets share: relationships and agreements — what we say to the people we love, and what we value in them; what we sign, and what it is worth. In the Vedic zodiac both planets are in Libra, the sign of partnership, for most of it; in the Western zodiac both are in Scorpio, the sign of intimacy and shared money, before Venus slips back into Libra. The traditional counsel: talk things through, revisit rather than begin, and keep weddings and major contracts for after the overlap if you have a free choice.

Why it is uncommon

Mercury is retrograde about a fifth of the time, but Venus only about 7% of the time, once every nineteen months. The two overlap only occasionally, and this one is long — about three weeks, almost the whole of Mercury's retrograde. It sits inside Venus's retrograde (3 October – 14 November), and both planets turn direct within a few hours of each other: Mercury on 13 November at 15:53 UTC, Venus on 14 November at 00:21 UTC.

Date (UTC) What happens
3 Oct Venus stations retrograde (sidereal Libra 14.3°, tropical Scorpio 8.5°)
19 – 29 Oct Venus combust — close to the Sun, invisible
24 Oct, 03:40 Venus meets the Sun (inferior conjunction)
24 Oct, 07:14 Mercury stations retrograde: the double retrograde begins (sidereal Libra 26.7°, tropical Scorpio 21.0°)
25 Oct Venus moves back into tropical Libra
30 Oct – 10 Nov Mercury combust
31 Oct Jupiter enters sidereal Leo
4 Nov, 14:25 Mercury meets the Sun (inferior conjunction)
5 Nov Venus enters sidereal Virgo, its debilitation (6 Nov at UTC+5:30)
12 Nov Mars leaves Cancer and enters sidereal Leo
13 Nov, 15:53 Mercury stations direct: the double retrograde ends
14 Nov, 00:21 Venus stations direct (sidereal Virgo 28.6°, tropical Libra 22.9°)

Both planets, at their inferior conjunctions, pass between Earth and the Sun within eleven days of each other. For a short while neither is visible in the night sky.

What astrologers read into it

Mercury governs words, thinking, contracts, trade and messages; Venus governs love, pleasure, beauty, value and money. When both turn back together, the tradition reads a double emphasis on:

  • Relationships and conversations — the talks that matter in love and partnership are revisited; misunderstandings are easy, and so is clearing up old ones.
  • Agreements and value — what we sign, what we pay, what something (or someone) is worth to us.
  • The past — old flames, old friends, old projects and old disagreements returning for a second look.

In the Vedic sky, Libra is crowded: Mercury (retrograde), Venus (retrograde until 5 November), and the Sun in its debilitation, all aspected by Mars from Cancer until 12 November. Astrologers read this as partnership and business terms under real scrutiny, with tempers that can flare in negotiations. In the Western sky, the overlap begins with both planets in Scorpio — trust, secrets, joint finances, intimacy — and Venus soon moves back into Libra, where the questions turn to fairness and balance.

Love and marriage

  • Talk, don't text. The tradition's best single piece of advice for this overlap. Mercury retrograde garbles words; Venus retrograde sharpens feelings. Say important things in person, slowly, and check what was heard.
  • Old loves. Messages from exes are a classic double-retrograde theme. Take time before replying, and before deciding anything.
  • Couples. A good season to revisit an old disagreement with patience, renegotiate how you share money or chores, or renew a commitment privately.
  • Proposals, engagements and weddings. Many astrologers would choose a date after 14 November — and, for Vedic muhurta, would in any case avoid Venus's combustion (about 19–29 October). If your date is fixed, have the whole muhurta read rather than worrying about one overlap.
  • Dating. Enjoy new connections; the tradition says their real shape shows after both planets are direct.

Money, contracts and work

  • Contracts: if there is a free choice, sign partnership deeds, leases, loans and major purchase agreements after 13–14 November (or after Mercury's shadow ends on 30 November). If you must sign now, read every clause and confirm every figure.
  • Spending: review luxury and pleasure spending; postpone big jewellery, art and vehicle purchases if you can. Around Diwali, in early November, many families buy gold and new things — the tradition's caution is about impulse, not about festivals; keep within the budget you set beforehand.
  • Work: favoured for revising proposals, re-pricing, renegotiating terms, auditing accounts, finishing creative work and reconnecting with former clients. Launches, rebrands and new contracts are better after the overlap.

None of this is legal or financial advice.

Mood and mind

Astrologers associate the overlap with a reflective, second-guessing mood: rethinking decisions, replaying conversations, noticing what is missing in love or work. With Mars aspecting Libra until 12 November, some irritability in close relationships is also expected. These are interpretations within a tradition, not findings about the mind. They make a good prompt for journaling and honest conversation; if worry or low mood starts to weigh on you, talk to someone you trust or a professional.

Which houses it touches

Vedic (from your Moon sign). Both planets spend the overlap in Libra (Venus until 5 November): count Libra from your Moon sign to find the house under review. For example, Libra is the 7th house — marriage and partnership — for Aries Moon; the 2nd — money and family — for Virgo Moon; and the 1st for Libra Moon. Full house-by-house readings are in Venus retrograde 2026 and Mercury retrograde 2026–2027.

Western (from your Sun or rising sign). Both start in Scorpio: the 8th house for Aries, the 7th for Taurus, the 1st for Scorpio, the 2nd for Libra, and so on. Venus moves back into Libra on 25 October.

What to do and what to avoid

Favoured Traditionally postponed if there is a choice
In-person conversations about the relationship Serious relationship talks by text
Reconciling, renegotiating, renewing Engagements and weddings (especially 19–29 Oct)
Re-reading contracts and accounts Signing major contracts in haste
Finishing and revising creative work Launches, rebrands, new collections
Budget review before festival spending Impulse luxury and vehicle purchases

FAQ

When does the double retrograde end? When Mercury stations direct on 13 November 2026 at 15:53 UTC (21:23 UTC+5:30). Venus follows about eight and a half hours later, on 14 November at 00:21 UTC.

Is a double retrograde dangerous? No. It is an unusual emphasis in an interpretive tradition — a season for review in love and agreements, not a time of danger.

Should I break up or reconcile during the double retrograde? The tradition advises against final decisions made in haste. It favours honest conversations now and decisions once both planets are direct.
