In short: Mercury appears to move backwards three or four times a year for about three weeks each time. In 2026 its retrogrades run 26 February – 20 March, 29 June – 23 July and 24 October – 13 November; in 2027, 9 February – 3 March, 10 June – 4 July and 7 October – 28 October. Western astrology popularly links these periods with delays and miscommunication; Vedic astrology treats a retrograde planet as strong in motion and reads it case by case. Either way, the sensible advice is ordinary: double-check, back up and allow extra time.

Why Mercury "goes backwards"

Mercury does not actually reverse. Because it orbits the Sun faster than Earth, there are stretches when Earth's own motion makes Mercury appear, against the background stars, to slow, stop (station), move backwards and then resume — like a faster car seeming to slip backwards as you overtake it. Mercury's synodic period (from one retrograde to the next) is about 116 days, so there are usually three retrogrades a year, each lasting about three weeks.

The dates

Computed with our engine; station times in UTC. Mercury's motion is the same in both zodiacs — only the sign names differ by about 24°.

Many astrologers also watch the "shadow" before and after each retrograde — the days when Mercury first crosses, and later finally clears, the degrees it will retrace — which adds about two weeks at each end.

The third retrograde of 2026 overlaps Venus's retrograde (3 October – 14 November 2026), so both personal planets are retrograde together from 24 October to 13 November — see Venus retrograde 2026 and the double retrograde. Now: Mercury retrograde, 24 October – 13 November 2026

The third retrograde of 2026 is the one under way this autumn, and it is unusual because Venus is retrograde at the same time.

In the Vedic zodiac the whole retrograde stays in Libra (Tula), the sign of balance, trade and partnership, ruled by Venus — which is itself retrograde. The Sun is in Libra too (its debilitation, 17 October – 16 November), and until 12 November Mars in Cancer aspects Libra. Astrologers read this crowding as a strong review of agreements, partnerships and business terms, with some heat in negotiations. Mercury moves from Vishakha (ruled by Jupiter: goals, persistence) back into Swati (ruled by Rahu: trade, independence, the wind that scatters).

In the Western zodiac it retrogrades through Scorpio: research, secrets, shared money, taxes, debts and intimate conversations. Astrologers associate a Scorpio Mercury retrograde with hidden information coming to light, second looks at joint finances, and conversations about trust.

What it is associated with this time

  • Words and mind. Re-reading, rethinking, and second thoughts about agreements. With Venus also retrograde, conversations about love and money are the ones most often revisited.
  • Contracts and money. Libra and Scorpio both concern agreements and shared resources: read the small print of partnership deeds, loans, leases and joint accounts. Many astrologers would sign major agreements after 13 November — or after the shadow ends on 30 November — if there is a free choice.
  • Travel and devices. Confirm bookings around the Diwali and year-end travel season, keep copies of documents, back up phones before updates.
  • Love. Old messages from old loves, and the need to say important things face to face rather than in writing. See the double retrograde.
  • Study and work. Revision, audits, follow-ups and finishing drafts go well; launches with no time to test are traditionally postponed.

By Moon sign (Vedic)

Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts Mercury's transit favourable in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th from the Moon; elsewhere "mixed" means the house is emphasised without the classical blessing.

The Western view

Modern Western astrology popularly associates Mercury retrograde with delays, misunderstandings, technical glitches and travel hiccups, and advises against signing contracts or launching projects. The more careful version — found in writers such as Robert Hand — reads it as a time suited to re-activities: reviewing, revising, reconnecting and finishing. The popular fear of Mercury retrograde is largely a late-twentieth-century phenomenon.

The sign and house it falls in describe where the review happens. In 2026 the retrogrades move through water signs (tropical Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio), which astrologers read as revisiting emotional matters as much as practical ones.

The Vedic view

In Jyotish a retrograde (vakri) planet is not weakened. BPHS includes motional strength (cheshta bala) among the six sources of a planet's strength, and a retrograde planet — near its closest approach to Earth — receives high motional strength. Retrograde Mercury in transit is therefore not treated as a general warning. Astrologers read it through:

  • the house it transits from your Moon (Phaladeepika counts Mercury favourable in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th from the Moon);
  • whether it re-crosses a sensitive point in your chart, giving a repeated, emphasised contact;
  • your dasha — if you are running a Mercury period, its retrograde is more noticeable.

Muhurta (electional astrology) does weigh Mercury's condition when choosing a time for contracts, education or commerce, so many Vedic astrologers would still prefer a direct Mercury for signing important documents if there is a free choice.

Practical, not superstitious

Whatever your tradition, the advice amounts to ordinary good practice: read contracts carefully, confirm travel details, back up data, and allow time for misunderstandings to be cleared up. If something must happen during a retrograde, there is no reason to fear it.

FAQ

How many Mercury retrogrades are there in 2026? Three: 26 February – 20 March, 29 June – 23 July, and 24 October – 13 November (UTC).

Should I sign a contract during Mercury retrograde? Many astrologers prefer not to if there is a free choice. If you must, read carefully — which is good advice at any time.

Is retrograde Mercury in my birth chart a problem? No. Roughly one person in five or six is born with Mercury retrograde. Vedic astrology counts it as strong in motion; Western astrologers often read it as a reflective, independent way of thinking.

Why do some sites give slightly different dates? Station times are computed to the minute but reported in different time zones, so the calendar date can differ by a day.
