In short: 'Grahan yoga' — eclipse yoga — is a later, popular name for the Sun or Moon joined by Rahu or Ketu. Classical texts do discuss luminaries with the nodes, and read them carefully, but the label and much of the fear around it are modern.

The rule

The combination is said to form when the Sun or the Moon occupies the same sign as Rahu or Ketu. A birth close to an actual solar or lunar eclipse is a stronger form.

What it means

The nodes 'eclipse' the luminaries in myth and astronomy. Joined with the Sun, they are read as strain on identity, the father or authority, and as intense ambition; with the Moon, as a sensitive, restless or intuitive mind.

The astronomy behind it

Eclipses happen only when a new or full Moon falls near the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. A solar eclipse is the Moon passing in front of the Sun near a node; a lunar eclipse is the Moon passing through the Earth's shadow near a node. Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita (ch. 5) explains this clearly. A birth chart with the Sun or Moon close to a node is therefore a birth near an eclipse season, and a birth on the day of an eclipse is the strongest form of the combination.

Sun with the nodes

The Sun with Rahu is read as intense ambition and a cloud over identity, the father or authority; with Ketu, as detachment from ego and a spiritual or inward sense of self. The Sun's dignity matters: exalted in Aries, it holds firm; debilitated in Libra, it is more affected.

Moon with the nodes

The Moon with Rahu is read as an intense, imaginative and restless mind, sometimes anxious; with Ketu, as intuition, detachment and spiritual sensitivity. A bright Moon, a strong dispositor and Jupiter's aspect all steady the mind. These combinations are common, and many people with them are especially perceptive.

Degree matters

The closer the luminary is to the node in degree, the stronger the combination; a luminary at the opposite end of the sign from a node shares the sign more loosely. A birth within a day or so of an actual eclipse is the classic strong form.

In the dashas

The combination comes forward in the dashas of the luminary and the node involved — for example the Rahu–Moon or Moon–Rahu periods, each about a year and a half — often as periods of intensity or change in identity or emotional life.

What weakens or cancels it

A strong, dignified luminary, Jupiter's aspect and a strong dispositor mitigate it.

When it gives results

A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Sun, Moon, Rahu, Ketu (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Sun 6 years; Moon 10 years; Rahu 18 years; Ketu 7 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Sun, Moon, Rahu, Ketu by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Kaal Sarp Yoga — Kaal Sarp ('serpent of time') yoga is said to form when all seven planets lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis.
  • Guru-Chandala Yoga — Guru-Chandala yoga forms when Jupiter, the guru, is joined by Rahu.
  • Shrapit Dosha — 'Shrapit dosha' — 'cursed combination' — is a popular modern name for Saturn joined by Rahu.
  • Budhaditya Yoga — Budhaditya (Budha-Aditya) yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury occupy the same sign.
  • Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari Yogas — Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari are the solar yogas, formed by planets beside the Sun.
