In short: Gajakesari yoga — 'elephant and lion' — forms when Jupiter is in an angle (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Moon. It is one of the best-known yogas, traditionally linked with intelligence, good name, prosperity and lasting reputation.

The rule

Gajakesari yoga forms when Jupiter is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign) counted from the Moon. The conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter therefore counts, as does Jupiter opposite the Moon or square to it by sign.

What it means

Classical texts describe the person with Gajakesari yoga as intelligent, eloquent, wealthy, virtuous and remembered after death. The image is of an elephant (Jupiter's dignity) and a lion (the Moon's courage of mind). In modern terms it is a supportive relationship between the mind and wisdom: emotional steadiness, good judgement and the ability to earn respect.

A worked check

With the Moon in Virgo, Jupiter in Virgo, Gemini, Sagittarius or Pisces forms Gajakesari. In Sagittarius or Pisces, Jupiter is in its own sign; in Gemini or Virgo, an enemy's sign (Mercury's), which weakens the result in most authors' view.

What strengthens it

The yoga is strongest when both Jupiter and the Moon are dignified — Jupiter exalted in Cancer with the Moon there is a celebrated form — when the Moon is bright, when neither is afflicted, and when the houses involved are good ones for the ascendant.

What weakens or cancels it

It is weakened when Jupiter is combust, debilitated (in Capricorn) or in an enemy's sign; when the Moon is dark or debilitated; when either is heavily afflicted; or when the yoga falls in difficult houses from the ascendant.

An example

With Taurus rising and the Moon in Taurus (exalted) in the 1st, Jupiter in Scorpio in the 7th is in an angle from the Moon: Gajakesari yoga. Jupiter rules the 8th and 11th for Taurus, so the yoga's gains come with 8th-house themes; the Moon's exaltation strengthens it.

Background

Gajakesari is perhaps the most widely quoted yoga in popular Indian astrology, partly because it is common. Its name joins the elephant (gaja), image of dignity and memory, with the lion (kesari), image of courage — two royal animals. Classical authors place it among the lunar yogas, those counted from the Moon, which also include Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara and Kemadruma.

When it gives results

A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Jupiter, Moon (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Jupiter 16 years; Moon 10 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Jupiter, Moon by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Kemadruma Yoga — Kemadruma yoga forms when there are no planets in the signs on either side of the Moon (the 2nd and 12th from it).
  • Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara Yogas — Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara are the three lunar yogas formed by planets beside the Moon.
  • Adhi Yoga — Adhi yoga forms when the natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th signs from the Moon.
  • Chandra-Mangala Yoga — Chandra-Mangala yoga forms when the Moon and Mars are together in one sign (and, in some texts, in mutual aspect).
  • Shakata Yoga — Shakata yoga — 'cart' yoga — forms when the Moon is in the 6th, 8th or 12th sign from Jupiter.

FAQ

How common is Gajakesari yoga? Common — Jupiter is in an angle from the Moon in about a third of charts — which is why its strength conditions matter.

Does the Moon–Jupiter conjunction count? Yes. The 1st sign from the Moon is an angle, so a conjunction forms the yoga.

Is Gajakesari yoga cancelled if Jupiter is debilitated? Classical texts say its results are weakened; Sunyra also checks for cancellation of the debility.
