In short: Shasha yoga is formed by Saturn in an angle in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra. It is traditionally linked with authority, discipline, endurance, organisational power and success that comes with time.

The rule

Shasha yoga forms when Saturn occupies a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant in its own sign or its exaltation sign. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (BPHS ch. 75; Phaladeepika ch. 6), each formed by one of the five non-luminary planets: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Shasha (Saturn).

For each ascendant

Where Saturn can form the yoga from the ascendant (own or exaltation sign in an angle):

Rising sign Angle(s) and sign
Aries 7th (Libra, exalted); 10th (Capricorn, own sign)
Taurus 10th (Aquarius, moolatrikona 0°–20°)
Gemini not possible from the lagna
Cancer 4th (Libra, exalted); 7th (Capricorn, own sign)
Leo 7th (Aquarius, moolatrikona 0°–20°)
Virgo not possible from the lagna
Libra 1st (Libra, exalted); 4th (Capricorn, own sign)
Scorpio 4th (Aquarius, moolatrikona 0°–20°)
Sagittarius not possible from the lagna
Capricorn 10th (Libra, exalted); 1st (Capricorn, own sign)
Aquarius 1st (Aquarius, moolatrikona 0°–20°)
Pisces not possible from the lagna

What it means

Classical texts describe the person with Shasha yoga as commanding, influential, and leading many people, sometimes with a stern or calculating side. In modern terms it is a strong Saturn in a visible place: patience, structure and lasting achievement, often in administration, government or large organisations.

What strengthens it

The yoga is strongest when Saturn is exalted or in its moolatrikona, unafflicted, well placed in the navamsa, and strong in Shadbala; aspects from Jupiter add protection. Its results come forward most in Saturn's dasha and antardashas.

What weakens or cancels it

The yoga is weakened when the planet is combust, heavily afflicted by malefics, in planetary war, or weak in the navamsa. Some texts say the presence of the Sun or Moon with the planet reduces it to ordinary results. A Mahapurusha planet that rules difficult houses for the ascendant still carries those themes.

An example

With Taurus rising, Saturn in Aquarius in the 10th house is the yogakaraka in its own sign in the house of career — a classic Shasha yoga.

Background

Shasha — 'hare' — is the Saturn type among the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. The classical portrait is of a person who commands many, holds authority over villages or towns, and is shrewd in dealings, sometimes with a harsh streak. In modern practice it is read as the organiser and administrator whose authority grows with time.

When it gives results

A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Saturn (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Saturn 19 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Saturn by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are relatively common — each of the five planets is in an angle in its own or exaltation sign in a noticeable share of charts. Their value lies in the planet's strength: a dignified planet in an angle is a pillar of the chart, and its dasha is often important. They do not on their own guarantee fame or fortune.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Ruchaka Yoga — Ruchaka yoga is formed by Mars in an angle in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn.
  • Bhadra Yoga — Bhadra yoga is formed by Mercury in an angle in Gemini or Virgo.
  • Hamsa Yoga — Hamsa yoga is formed by Jupiter in an angle in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer.
  • Malavya Yoga — Malavya yoga is formed by Venus in an angle in Taurus, Libra or Pisces.

FAQ

How common is Shasha yoga? Fairly common: Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle in a noticeable minority of charts. Its strength varies widely.

Does Shasha yoga have to be from the ascendant? The classical rule counts from the ascendant; many astrologers also count it from the Moon, which they treat as a secondary form.

Is Shasha yoga good despite Saturn being a malefic? Yes. A dignified Saturn in an angle is a source of strength and endurance; it may bring results later in life.
