In short: Ruchaka yoga is formed by Mars in an angle in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn. It is traditionally linked with courage, physical strength, leadership and success through effort — Mars at its most capable.
The rule
Ruchaka yoga forms when Mars occupies a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant in its own sign or its exaltation sign. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (BPHS ch. 75; Phaladeepika ch. 6), each formed by one of the five non-luminary planets: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Shasha (Saturn).
For each ascendant
Where Mars can form the yoga from the ascendant (own or exaltation sign in an angle):
| Rising sign | Angle(s) and sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | 1st (Aries, moolatrikona 0°–12°); 10th (Capricorn, exalted) |
| Taurus | 7th (Scorpio, own sign) |
| Gemini | not possible from the lagna |
| Cancer | 10th (Aries, moolatrikona 0°–12°); 7th (Capricorn, exalted) |
| Leo | 4th (Scorpio, own sign) |
| Virgo | not possible from the lagna |
| Libra | 7th (Aries, moolatrikona 0°–12°); 4th (Capricorn, exalted) |
| Scorpio | 1st (Scorpio, own sign) |
| Sagittarius | not possible from the lagna |
| Capricorn | 4th (Aries, moolatrikona 0°–12°); 1st (Capricorn, exalted) |
| Aquarius | 10th (Scorpio, own sign) |
| Pisces | not possible from the lagna |
What it means
Classical texts describe the person with Ruchaka yoga as brave, strong-bodied, commanding and successful in action, often in military, sporting, technical or leadership roles. In modern terms it is a well-dignified Mars in a visible place: energy that is organised, courageous and effective. Because Mars is a natural malefic, the yoga also brings Mars's sharpness, and the house Mars occupies shows where that force works.
What strengthens it
The yoga is strongest when Mars is exalted or in its moolatrikona, unafflicted, well placed in the navamsa, and strong in Shadbala; aspects from Jupiter add protection. Its results come forward most in Mars's dasha and antardashas.
What weakens or cancels it
The yoga is weakened when the planet is combust, heavily afflicted by malefics, in planetary war, or weak in the navamsa. Some texts say the presence of the Sun or Moon with the planet reduces it to ordinary results. A Mahapurusha planet that rules difficult houses for the ascendant still carries those themes.
An example
With Cancer rising, Mars in Aries in the 10th house is the yogakaraka (ruling the 5th and 10th) in its own sign in the house of career — a classic Ruchaka yoga combining courage with professional success.
Background
The five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas — 'yogas of the five great persons' — are among the most quoted combinations in Indian astrology. BPHS devotes a chapter to them and describes the bodily features and temperament of each type in detail; Phaladeepika repeats the rule. Ruchaka is the Mars type: the classical portrait is of a strong, ruddy, courageous person who leads others, wins in conflict and is respected by rulers.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Mars (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Mars 7 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Mars by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are relatively common — each of the five planets is in an angle in its own or exaltation sign in a noticeable share of charts. Their value lies in the planet's strength: a dignified planet in an angle is a pillar of the chart, and its dasha is often important. They do not on their own guarantee fame or fortune.

FAQ
How common is Ruchaka yoga? Fairly common: Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle in a noticeable minority of charts. Its strength varies widely.
Does Ruchaka yoga have to be from the ascendant? The classical rule counts from the ascendant; many astrologers also count it from the Moon, which they treat as a secondary form.
Is Ruchaka yoga related to Mangal dosha? Mars in the 1st, 4th or 7th can count for Mangal dosha, but Mars in its own or exaltation sign is one of the classical cancellations of that dosha.
