In short: Malavya yoga is formed by Venus in an angle in Taurus, Libra or Pisces. It is traditionally linked with beauty, artistic gifts, comfort, happy relationships and refined enjoyment.
The rule
Malavya yoga forms when Venus occupies a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant in its own sign or its exaltation sign. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (BPHS ch. 75; Phaladeepika ch. 6), each formed by one of the five non-luminary planets: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Shasha (Saturn).
For each ascendant
Where Venus can form the yoga from the ascendant (own or exaltation sign in an angle):
| Rising sign | Angle(s) and sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | 7th (Libra, moolatrikona 0°–15°) |
| Taurus | 1st (Taurus, own sign) |
| Gemini | 10th (Pisces, exalted) |
| Cancer | 4th (Libra, moolatrikona 0°–15°) |
| Leo | 10th (Taurus, own sign) |
| Virgo | 7th (Pisces, exalted) |
| Libra | 1st (Libra, moolatrikona 0°–15°) |
| Scorpio | 7th (Taurus, own sign) |
| Sagittarius | 4th (Pisces, exalted) |
| Capricorn | 10th (Libra, moolatrikona 0°–15°) |
| Aquarius | 4th (Taurus, own sign) |
| Pisces | 1st (Pisces, exalted) |
What it means
Classical texts describe the person with Malavya yoga as attractive, prosperous, enjoying vehicles and comforts, and fond of the arts. In modern terms it is a strong Venus in a visible place: grace, taste, charm and an ability to make life beautiful. Venus in the 4th, where it has directional strength, gives an especially comfortable form.
What strengthens it
The yoga is strongest when Venus is exalted or in its moolatrikona, unafflicted, well placed in the navamsa, and strong in Shadbala; aspects from Jupiter add protection. Its results come forward most in Venus's dasha and antardashas.
What weakens or cancels it
The yoga is weakened when the planet is combust, heavily afflicted by malefics, in planetary war, or weak in the navamsa. Some texts say the presence of the Sun or Moon with the planet reduces it to ordinary results. A Mahapurusha planet that rules difficult houses for the ascendant still carries those themes.
An example
With Aquarius rising, Venus in Taurus in the 4th house is the yogakaraka in its own sign in an angle where it also has directional strength — a celebrated Malavya yoga.
Background
Malavya is the Venus type among the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. The classical portrait is of a person with a graceful body, a steady mind, wealth, vehicles, a happy family and good fortune, fond of beauty and pleasure. Many astrologers consider the Malavya form in the 4th house, where Venus also has directional strength, especially comfortable.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Venus (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Venus 20 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Venus by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are relatively common — each of the five planets is in an angle in its own or exaltation sign in a noticeable share of charts. Their value lies in the planet's strength: a dignified planet in an angle is a pillar of the chart, and its dasha is often important. They do not on their own guarantee fame or fortune.

FAQ
How common is Malavya yoga? Fairly common: Venus is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle in a noticeable minority of charts. Its strength varies widely.
Does Malavya yoga have to be from the ascendant? The classical rule counts from the ascendant; many astrologers also count it from the Moon, which they treat as a secondary form.
Does Malavya yoga guarantee a good marriage? No single yoga guarantees that. Malavya yoga describes a strong Venus; the 7th house, its lord and the navamsa decide marriage.
