In short: Hamsa yoga is formed by Jupiter in an angle in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer. It is traditionally linked with wisdom, righteousness, respect, generosity and a protected life.
The rule
Hamsa yoga forms when Jupiter occupies a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant in its own sign or its exaltation sign. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (BPHS ch. 75; Phaladeepika ch. 6), each formed by one of the five non-luminary planets: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Shasha (Saturn).
For each ascendant
Where Jupiter can form the yoga from the ascendant (own or exaltation sign in an angle):
| Rising sign | Angle(s) and sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | 4th (Cancer, exalted) |
| Taurus | not possible from the lagna |
| Gemini | 7th (Sagittarius, moolatrikona 0°–10°); 10th (Pisces, own sign) |
| Cancer | 1st (Cancer, exalted) |
| Leo | not possible from the lagna |
| Virgo | 4th (Sagittarius, moolatrikona 0°–10°); 7th (Pisces, own sign) |
| Libra | 10th (Cancer, exalted) |
| Scorpio | not possible from the lagna |
| Sagittarius | 1st (Sagittarius, moolatrikona 0°–10°); 4th (Pisces, own sign) |
| Capricorn | 7th (Cancer, exalted) |
| Aquarius | not possible from the lagna |
| Pisces | 10th (Sagittarius, moolatrikona 0°–10°); 1st (Pisces, own sign) |
What it means
Classical texts describe the person with Hamsa yoga as virtuous, learned, respected by good people and fortunate. In modern terms it is Jupiter strong in a visible place: good judgement, a teaching nature and a sense of protection. Because Jupiter is the greatest benefic, Hamsa yoga is often counted the most auspicious of the five, though Jupiter ruling difficult houses for the ascendant still carries those themes.
What strengthens it
The yoga is strongest when Jupiter is exalted or in its moolatrikona, unafflicted, well placed in the navamsa, and strong in Shadbala; aspects from Jupiter add protection. Its results come forward most in Jupiter's dasha and antardashas.
What weakens or cancels it
The yoga is weakened when the planet is combust, heavily afflicted by malefics, in planetary war, or weak in the navamsa. Some texts say the presence of the Sun or Moon with the planet reduces it to ordinary results. A Mahapurusha planet that rules difficult houses for the ascendant still carries those themes.
An example
With Cancer rising, Jupiter in Cancer in the 1st house is exalted in an angle — Hamsa yoga — and also rules the 9th, the house of fortune.
Background
Hamsa — 'swan' — is the Jupiter type among the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. The swan in Indian tradition is the bird of discernment, said to separate milk from water, and the classical portrait is of a righteous, fair-complexioned, learned person praised by the good and devoted to sacred knowledge.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Jupiter (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Jupiter 16 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Jupiter by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are relatively common — each of the five planets is in an angle in its own or exaltation sign in a noticeable share of charts. Their value lies in the planet's strength: a dignified planet in an angle is a pillar of the chart, and its dasha is often important. They do not on their own guarantee fame or fortune.

FAQ
How common is Hamsa yoga? Fairly common: Jupiter is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle in a noticeable minority of charts. Its strength varies widely.
Does Hamsa yoga have to be from the ascendant? The classical rule counts from the ascendant; many astrologers also count it from the Moon, which they treat as a secondary form.
Is Hamsa yoga the best Mahapurusha yoga? It is often considered the most auspicious, because Jupiter is the greatest benefic; strength and lordship still decide its value.
