Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 1
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 (Arjuna Vishada Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning
The armies stand ready at Kurukshetra, and Arjuna asks Krishna to drive his chariot between them; there he sees his grandfather, his teacher and his cousins, and his courage gives way. The chapter teaches nothing yet: it shows, honestly, the confusion and grief that the rest of the Gita answers.
Listen: Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1: Arjuna Vishada Yoga
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What happens in chapter 1
Before the Gita begins, the Pandava brothers have lost their kingdom to their cousins, the Kauravas, in a game of dice, and have lived thirteen years in exile. When they return, Duryodhana, the eldest Kaurava, refuses to give back even five villages, and Krishna's mission of peace fails. Both sides gather their allies at Kurukshetra, north of present-day Delhi. The sage Vyasa gives Sanjaya, the charioteer of the blind king Dhritarashtra, the power to see the battlefield from afar, and the whole Gita is Sanjaya's report to the king.
The chapter opens with the king's anxious question (1.1). Duryodhana reviews the two armies, Bhishma blows his conch, and the Pandava heroes answer with theirs; Krishna's conch is Panchajanya and Arjuna's is Devadatta (1.15). Arjuna asks Krishna to place the chariot between the armies so that he can see whom he must fight (1.21). What he sees is his own family: grandfather Bhishma, his teacher Drona, uncles, cousins, sons and friends (1.26).
From there the chapter is Arjuna's grief. His body fails him (1.29–1.30), he says he wants no kingdom bought with his teachers' blood (1.32), he fears the ruin of families and their traditions, and in the last verse he puts down his bow and sits down in the chariot (1.47). Krishna has said only one line so far (1.25).
Why is despair called a “yoga”? Traditional teachers say that the Gita's teaching could only begin once Arjuna admitted he did not know what to do: honest confusion is the first step. Reading the chapter with the meanings takes about 20 minutes.
Verses 1.1–1.11: the two armies
The blind king asks what happened; Duryodhana names the heroes on both sides to his teacher Drona.

अर्थ: भीष्म द्वारा रक्षित हमारी सेना अपर्याप्त है, और भीम द्वारा रक्षित उनकी सेना पर्याप्त है। (यह श्लोक दो तरह से समझा जाता है: कुछ टीकाकार “अपर्याप्त” का अर्थ “असीम, अजेय” लेते हैं, यानी दुर्योधन गर्व कर रहे हैं; रामानुज आदि इसे “कम, अधूरी” मानते हैं, यानी उनके मन में डर है।)
Meaning: Our army, guarded by Bhishma, is aparyapta; theirs, guarded by Bhima, is paryapta. (The verse is read two ways. Some commentators take aparyapta as “beyond measure”, so Duryodhana is boasting; others, such as Ramanuja, take it as “not enough”, so he is afraid.)

strishu dushtasu varshneya jayate varna-sankarah.
अर्थ: हे कृष्ण, अधर्म के बढ़ने से कुल की स्त्रियाँ मर्यादा से हट जाती हैं, और हे वार्ष्णेय, तब वर्णों का मेल (वर्णसंकर) होता है। (यह अर्जुन का तर्क है, जो उस समय के समाज की चिंता बताता है; श्रीकृष्ण आगे के अध्यायों में इसका उत्तर देते हैं।)
Meaning: Krishna, when lawlessness prevails, the women of the family go astray, and then, Varshneya, the social orders become mixed (varna-sankara). (This is Arjuna's argument, voicing the fears of his society; Krishna answers him in the chapters that follow.)
Verse 1.42
संकरो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च।
पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः॥
Sankaro narakayaiva kulaghnanam kulasya cha,
patanti pitaro hy esham lupta-pindodaka-kriyah.
अर्थ: यह मेल कुल का नाश करने वालों को और कुल को नरक में ले जाता है, क्योंकि उनके पितरों को पिंड और जल का तर्पण मिलना बंद हो जाता है और वे गिर जाते हैं।
Meaning: This mixing drags both the family and those who destroyed it into hell, for their ancestors fall when the offerings of rice-balls and water to them stop.
Verse 1.43
दोषैरेतैः कुलघ्नानां वर्णसंकरकारकैः।
उत्साद्यन्ते जातिधर्माः कुलधर्माश्च शाश्वताः॥
Doshair etaih kulaghnanam varna-sankara-karakaih,
utsadyante jati-dharmah kula-dharmash cha shashvatah.
अर्थ: कुल का नाश करने वालों के इन दोषों से, जो वर्णसंकर पैदा करते हैं, जाति के धर्म और कुल की सदा से चली आ रही परंपराएँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं।
Meaning: Through these wrongs of the family-destroyers, which bring about such mixing, the duties of the community and the age-old customs of the family are wiped out.
Verse 1.44
उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन।
नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम॥
Utsanna-kula-dharmanam manushyanam janardana,
narake 'niyatam vaso bhavatity anushushruma.
अर्थ: हे जनार्दन, हमने सुना है कि जिन लोगों की कुल-परंपराएँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं, उन्हें न जाने कितने समय तक नरक में रहना पड़ता है।
Meaning: Janardana, we have heard that people whose family traditions are destroyed must live in hell for a time without end. (Some texts read narake niyatam, “surely in hell”.)
Verse 1.45
अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्।
यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः॥
Aho bata mahat papam kartum vyavasita vayam,
yad rajya-sukha-lobhena hantum svajanam udyatah.
अर्थ: हाय! कितने दुख की बात है कि हम इतना बड़ा पाप करने चले हैं: राज्य और सुख के लोभ में अपने ही लोगों को मारने को तैयार हैं।
Meaning: Alas! We have set out to commit a great sin, ready to kill our own people out of greed for a kingdom and its pleasures.
Verse 1.46
यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः।
धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत्॥
Yadi mam apratikaram ashastram shastra-panayah,
dhartarashtra rane hanyus tan me kshemataram bhavet.
अर्थ: अगर मैं बिना शस्त्र के, बिना सामना किए खड़ा रहूँ, और हाथ में शस्त्र लिए धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र मुझे युद्ध में मार दें, तो वह मेरे लिए ज़्यादा अच्छा होगा।
Meaning: It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, killed me in battle while I stood unarmed and did not resist.
Verse 1.47
सञ्जय उवाच
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः संख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्।
विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानसः॥
Sanjaya uvacha
evam uktvarjunah sankhye rathopastha upavishat,
visrijya sasharam chapam shoka-samvigna-manasah.
अर्थ: संजय ने कहा: युद्धभूमि में ऐसा कहकर, शोक से व्याकुल मन वाले अर्जुन धनुष-बाण छोड़कर रथ के पिछले भाग में बैठ गए।
Meaning: Sanjaya said: Having spoken like this on the battlefield, Arjuna put down his bow and arrows and sank onto the seat of his chariot, his mind overwhelmed by grief.
Chapter colophon
ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे
श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादेऽर्जुनविषादयोगो नाम प्रथमोऽध्यायः॥
Om tat sad iti shrimad-bhagavad-gitasupanishatsu brahma-vidyayam yoga-shastre
shri-krishnarjuna-samvade 'rjuna-vishada-yogo nama prathamo 'dhyayah.
अर्थ: ॐ तत् सत्। इस प्रकार उपनिषद-रूप श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता में, जो ब्रह्मविद्या और योगशास्त्र है, श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुन के संवाद में “अर्जुनविषादयोग” नाम का पहला अध्याय पूरा हुआ।
Meaning: Om Tat Sat. Here ends the first chapter, called the Yoga of Arjuna's Despair, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna, in the Upanishad of the Bhagavad Gita, the knowledge of Brahman and the scripture of yoga.
Questions
Why is a chapter about Arjuna's despair called a yoga?
Every chapter of the Gita is named a yoga, a way of joining the mind to what is lasting. Commentators explain that Arjuna's grief became the doorway to the teaching: only when he admitted he was lost could Krishna begin. Chapter 2 opens with exactly that request for guidance.
What does “dharmakshetre kurukshetre” in Gita 1.1 mean?
It means “on the field of dharma, at Kurukshetra”. Kurukshetra, in present-day Haryana, was already a holy place where sacrifices were performed. Many teachers also read the phrase as a hint that the battle is moral as well as physical: the field where right and wrong are decided.
What are the names of the conches in chapter 1?
Bhishma blows his conch first. Then Krishna blows Panchajanya, Arjuna Devadatta, Bhima Paundra, Yudhishthira Anantavijaya, Nakula Sughosha and Sahadeva Manipushpaka (verses 1.15–1.16).
Who speaks in the first chapter?
King Dhritarashtra asks the opening question, and everything after it is Sanjaya's report. Inside that report Duryodhana speaks to Drona, Arjuna speaks to Krishna, and Krishna says just one sentence (1.25). His teaching begins in chapter 2.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked every verse of this chapter against texts fetched on 1 November 2026: the chapter page on Sanskrit Wikisource (भगवद्गीता/अर्जुनविषादयोगः), the Sanskrit text of the open gita/gita dataset on GitHub (the same text as IIT Kanpur's Gita Supersite), and, as a third witness, chapter 25 of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata on Sanskrit Wikisource. The two Gita texts agree word for word; their only differences are spelling slips, where we read nirikshe (1.22), pitrin and bhratrin (1.26) and shvashurah (1.34). We follow the standard reading of both Gita texts: “narake 'niyatam vaso” in 1.44, where the Mahabharata text has “narake niyatam” (“surely in hell”), and “saumadattis tathaiva cha” in 1.8, where it has “saumadattir jayadrathah”. As in our sources, the speaker line “Arjuna uvacha” stands at the head of verses 1.21 and 1.28, although the first half of those verses is still Sanjaya speaking. The transliteration and the meanings are our own.
