Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the source from which everything comes, and that those who love him are given the light to reach him. What chapter 10 is about

Chapter 9 ended with Krishna asking Arjuna to fix his mind on him. Chapter 10 continues out of affection: Krishna says even gods and great sages do not know his origin, because he is the origin of them all. Verses 10.8 to 10.11 are among the most loved in the Gita: everything comes from him; the wise who know this love him, talk of him with one another and find joy in it; and to them he gives the understanding by which they reach him, lighting the lamp of knowledge in their hearts.

Arjuna now accepts that Krishna is the Supreme (10.12) and asks a very practical question (10.17): in which things should I think of you? Krishna answers with his “vibhutis”, his glories. Among the Adityas he is Vishnu, among lights the sun (10.21), among rivers the Ganga, among months Margashirsha (10.35), among the Pandavas Arjuna himself. The list includes gods, sages, animals, mountains, letters and even the gambler’s dice, which shows it is not a list of “good” things but of whatever stands out in its kind.

The chapter closes with its key (10.41): wherever you see something glorious, beautiful or powerful, know that it comes from a spark of Krishna’s splendour. And then a gentle surprise (10.42): why know all these details? Krishna holds this whole universe with just one small part of himself. Reading it with the meanings takes about 25 minutes.

Verses 10.1–10.11: the source of all, and the lamp of knowledge

Krishna says all qualities and all beings come from him, and that he lights the way for those who love him.

Verse 10.40

नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परन्तप।
एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया॥

Nanto 'sti mama divyanam vibhutinam parantapa,
esha tuddeshatah prokto vibhuter vistaro maya.

अर्थ: हे परंतप, मेरी दिव्य विभूतियों का कोई अंत नहीं है। यह जो विस्तार मैंने बताया, वह तो केवल उदाहरण के रूप में संक्षेप में कहा है।

Meaning: There is no end to my divine glories, Arjuna. What I have told you is only a short sketch, given by way of example.

Verse 10.41

यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा।
तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंऽशसंभवम्॥

Yad yad vibhutimat sattvam shrimad urjitam eva va,
tat tad evavagachchha tvam mama tejo-'msha-sambhavam.

अर्थ: जो-जो वस्तु महिमामय, सुंदर या शक्तिशाली है, उस-उस को तुम मेरे तेज के एक अंश से उत्पन्न हुई जानो।

Meaning: Whatever is glorious, beautiful or mighty, know that it has sprung from a spark of my splendour.

Verse 10.42

अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन।
विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत्॥

Athava bahunaitena kim jnatena tavarjuna,
vishtabhyaham idam kritsnam ekamshena sthito jagat.

अर्थ: अथवा, हे अर्जुन, यह सब विस्तार से जानकर तुम्हें क्या करना है? मैं इस पूरे जगत को अपने केवल एक अंश से धारण करके स्थित हूँ।

Meaning: But what need have you, Arjuna, to know all this in detail? I stand holding up this entire universe with a single fraction of myself.

Chapter colophon

ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे
श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादे विभूतियोगो नाम दशमोऽध्यायः॥

Om tat sad iti shrimad-bhagavad-gitasu upanishatsu brahma-vidyayam yoga-shastre
shri-krishnarjuna-samvade vibhuti-yogo nama dashamo 'dhyayah.

अर्थ: ॐ तत् सत्। इस प्रकार उपनिषद रूपी श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता में, जो ब्रह्मविद्या और योगशास्त्र है, श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुन के संवाद में “विभूतियोग” नाम का दसवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ।

Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the tenth chapter, called “the yoga of divine glories”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.

Questions

What does “vibhuti” mean in Gita chapter 10?

Here vibhuti means a special manifestation of the divine: the glory or power of God showing through something in the world. Krishna names the finest member of many groups as his vibhuti, and in 10.41 gives the general rule: whatever is glorious, beautiful or mighty comes from a spark of his splendour. (In daily speech “vibhuti” also means sacred ash, a different use of the same word.)

Why does Krishna say he is the gambling of cheats (10.36)?

The list is not of things that are good, but of what is strongest or most striking in each kind. Among the tricks of those who deceive, dice is the most powerful, so even there the power is from God. Commentators add that this is description, not approval: the same chapter places the divine also in self-control, truth and silence.

Why is Margashirsha called the best month (10.35)?

Krishna says that among months he is Margashirsha (roughly November–December). Commentators explain that it is a mild, pleasant month when crops are ripe, and some note it was once counted as the first month of the year. Gita Jayanti, the day the Gita is remembered, falls in this month, on Mokshada Ekadashi.

What is the main message of chapter 10?

That the divine is not far away: it shows itself in whatever is finest around us, in the sun, a great river, a wise teacher, a moment of victory or a quiet mind. Verses 10.8 to 10.11 add that those who keep God in mind with love are given understanding from within. The closing verse, 10.42, reminds us that all this is only a small part of the whole.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 42 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Vibhutiyogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. The sources agree word for word in this chapter; the only differences are spellings: in 10.1 and 10.18 IIT Kanpur and the dataset write “shrinu” and “shrinvatah” with an extra r-sign, and in 10.29 “pitrinam” with a broken long vowel, where we follow Wikisource and Gita Press; and IIT Kanpur writes “atmana ’tmanam” (10.15) and “dhata ’ham” (10.33) with an avagraha, where we follow the plain Gita Press spelling. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
