Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 11
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11 (Vishvarupa Darshana Yoga) in Hindi and English with meaning
Having heard of Krishna’s glories, Arjuna asks to see his divine form with his own eyes. Krishna gives him divine sight, and Arjuna sees the whole universe in one body: gods, sages, worlds, and the warriors of both armies rushing into blazing mouths. Shaken, he bows and prays, and Krishna, smiling, takes back his gentle human form and tells him that such a vision is reached by devotion alone.

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What chapter 11 is about
In chapter 10 Krishna described his glories in words. Now Arjuna asks, humbly (11.3–11.4): if you think I am able, show me that divine form itself. Krishna says human eyes cannot see it, and gives Arjuna divine sight (11.8). The narrator Sanjaya, who is telling the story to the blind king Dhritarashtra, then describes what Arjuna saw: countless faces, eyes, ornaments and weapons, and a light so great that if a thousand suns rose in the sky at once, it might just match it (11.12).
Arjuna’s wonder slowly turns to fear. He sees all the gods inside this form, but also the warriors of both armies, Bhishma, Drona and Karna among them, rushing into its fiery mouths like rivers into the sea or moths into a flame. When he asks who this terrible being is, Krishna gives the chapter’s most famous answer (11.32): “I am Time, grown mighty, the destroyer of worlds.” These warriors are already gone in Time’s plan, so Arjuna should rise and be only the instrument (11.33).
Arjuna then offers one of the Gita’s great prayers (11.36–11.46), bowing again and again (“namo namas te”, 11.39) and asking forgiveness for having treated Krishna as an ordinary friend (11.41–11.42). He asks to see the familiar four-armed form again. Krishna gently returns to his human form and ends with the heart of the chapter (11.54–11.55): not study, ritual, charity or austerity, but single-minded devotion lets one know and reach him. Reading it with the meanings takes about 35 minutes.
Verses 11.1–11.8: Arjuna’s wish and the gift of divine sight
Arjuna asks to see Krishna’s divine form; Krishna tells him to look, and gives him the eyes to do so.

Chapter colophon
Om tat sad iti shrimad-bhagavad-gitasu upanishatsu brahma-vidyayam yoga-shastre
shri-krishnarjuna-samvade vishvarupa-darshana-yogo namaikadasho 'dhyayah.
Meaning: Om tat sat. Thus ends the eleventh chapter, called “the yoga of the vision of the universal form”, in the Bhagavad Gita, an Upanishad, the knowledge of Brahman and a scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.
Questions
What is the Vishvarupa (universal form) in Gita chapter 11?
It is the form in which Krishna shows Arjuna the whole universe within his own body: all gods, beings and worlds, past and future, with countless faces and arms and a light like a thousand suns (11.12). Human eyes cannot see it, so Krishna first gives Arjuna divine sight (11.8). The vision shows that everything, the gentle and the terrible, rests in God.
What does “kalo ’smi” (Gita 11.32) mean?
Krishna says, “I am Time, grown mighty, the destroyer of worlds.” The Sanskrit word kala means time, and also the end that time brings. The point, in 11.33, is that the outcome is already set in the greater order of things; Arjuna is asked to do his duty as an instrument, not to carry the weight as if everything depended on him. The physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer famously recalled this verse in 1945.
Why did Arjuna ask Krishna to show his normal form again?
The vision was overwhelming: Arjuna felt joy but also deep fear (11.45), and he realised he had often treated Krishna casually as a friend (11.41–11.42). He asked for the familiar four-armed form, and then Krishna returned to his gentle human form (11.50–11.51). Many readers take this as a sign that God meets us in a form we can love and approach.
What is the main teaching at the end of chapter 11?
Verses 11.53–11.55: such a vision is not earned by study, austerity, charity or ritual, but by undivided devotion. Verse 11.55 sums up the devotee: one who works for God, holds God as the highest, is free from clinging and bears no ill will to any being. Many teachers call it a summary of the whole Gita, and it leads straight into chapter 12, on devotion.
Text and sources
The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 55 verses and the colophon one by one against the chapter on Sanskrit Wikisource (“Bhagavadgita/Vishvarupadarshanayogah”) and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita text of IIT Kanpur’s Gita Supersite (heritage.iitk.ac.in), whose text the open “gita/gita” dataset also reproduces (we used only its Sanskrit), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions. Where they differ we follow the Gita Press reading. Differences: in 11.54 IIT Kanpur and the dataset have “drishtum”, a slip for “drashtum”, which Wikisource and Gita Press print; in 11.21 and 11.28 the dataset adds a visarga (“sura-sanghah”, “abhimukhah”) where the other sources and Gita Press have “sura-sangha vishanti” and “abhimukha dravanti”; and in 11.54 the dataset joins “shakyam aham”, where the others keep Gita Press’s “shakya aham”; IIT Kanpur and the dataset also have a garbled letter in “ashvinau” (11.6, 11.22). As in the other chapters, IIT Kanpur writes an avagraha in words like “tathaham” (11.23), where we follow the plain Gita Press spelling. The longer verses (11.15–11.50) are printed as Gita Press prints them, two quarter-lines to a line. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
