Durga Saptashati Chapter 11 (Narayani Stuti) in Sanskrit with Hindi and English meaning

With Shumbha gone, the gods praise the Goddess in one of the best-loved hymns of Hindu devotion, each verse ending “Narayani namo ’stu te”, salutations to you, Narayani. She offers them a boon, and they ask only that she keep protecting the world. She promises to come again whenever it is troubled, and names the forms she will take.

What chapter 11 is about

Chapter 11 follows the victory of chapter 10. Shumbha has fallen, and the gods, led by Agni and Indra, turn to the Goddess with joy and praise her (11.2). This hymn is the Narayani Stuti, named for its refrain “Narayani namo ’stu te”, salutations to you, Narayani. It is the last of the four great hymns of the Saptashati (after those in chapters 1, 4 and 5), and many people recite it on its own.

The hymn moves from the vast to the near. She is the earth and the waters that hold the world (11.4), the seed of the universe and its Maya (11.5), the understanding in every heart (11.8). The verse “Sarva mangala mangalye” (11.10) is sung far beyond this text, at the end of pujas and aartis. Verses 11.13–11.21 greet her in each of the forms that fought beside her, Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Aindri, Shivaduti and Chamunda, and then the gods ask her face, trident, bell and sword to protect them (11.25–11.28).

The Goddess then offers a boon (11.37). The gods ask for nothing for themselves beyond this: that she keep calming the troubles of the worlds as she has just done (11.39). Her answer is a promise (11.41–11.55): she will be born to Yashoda in Nanda’s home and live on the Vindhya hills; she will come as Raktadantika, as Shatakshi who looks on the world with a hundred eyes in a long drought, as Shakambhari who feeds everyone with plants from her own body, as Durga, as Bhima and as Bhramari, and “whenever trouble arises, I will come down again.” Reading the chapter with the meanings takes about 25 minutes.

Questions

Why is the Goddess called Narayani in this hymn?

Narayani means “the power of Narayana”, the Shakti of Vishnu, and verse 11.5 calls her Vaishnavi, the power of Vishnu, and the supreme Maya. But the hymn greets her as every power at once: Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi and the rest (11.13–11.21), Lakshmi and Sarasvati (11.22–11.23), Durga, Katyayani and Bhadrakali (11.24–11.26). Commentators also read Narayani more widely, as the refuge and resting place of all beings.

What does “Sarva mangala mangalye” mean?

Verse 11.10 addresses the Goddess as “the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, kind Shiva, who brings every aim to fulfilment, our refuge, three-eyed Gauri”, and ends “salutations to you, Narayani”. It is recited at the close of many pujas and aartis, well beyond the Saptashati. Gita Press prints “sarva-mangala-mangalye” and notes “maangalye” as a variant; the meaning is the same.

Which future forms does the Goddess promise in chapter 11?

In 11.41–11.55 she names them: born to Yashoda in Nanda’s home and living on the Vindhya hills (Vindhyavasini, linked with the Krishna story); Raktadantika, “red-toothed”, who ends the danavas of Viprachitti’s line; Shatakshi, “hundred-eyed”, who appears in a hundred-year drought; Shakambhari, who feeds the world with plants from her body; Durga, after slaying the asura Durgama; Bhima on the Himalaya; and Bhramari, a form of countless bees, against the asura Aruna. She ends: whenever such trouble arises, I will come again.

Can the Narayani Stuti be recited on its own?

Yes. Many people recite verses 11.3–11.35 as a separate hymn, especially during Navratri, and the single verse 11.10 is used daily by many families. Within a full Saptashati reading it is read in its place as part of chapter 11. Reading the hymn alone takes about 10 minutes.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked all 55 mantras and the colophon one by one against three sources, comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spelling conventions: the complete Saptashati (“durga700”) on sanskritdocuments.org, chapter 91 of the Markandeya Purana on Sanskrit Wikisource, and the archive.org scan of the Gita Press “Shri Durga Saptashati” (mula bhaga). We follow the Gita Press reading and numbering (speaker lines 11.1, 11.36, 11.38 and 11.40 and the closing half-verse 11.55 counted as mantras, 55 in all). Readings chosen with Gita Press and Wikisource against sanskritdocuments: “svarga-mukti-pradayini” (11.7; “bhukti” is a noted variant), “sarva-bhitibhyah” (11.25), “dharayasiti” (11.33), “vaiprachittams tu” (11.43), “samstuta” (11.46) and “nirikshishyami yan munin” (11.47). In 11.22 Gita Press reads “pushti”, “maha-ratri” and “maha-avidye”, and lists “pushte”, “maha-ratre” and “mahamaye” as variants (sanskritdocuments and Wikisource read “mahamaye”). In 11.10 Gita Press reads “mangalye” and notes “maangalye”. Wikisource, following the Purana, has a separate speaker line “Deva uchuh” before 11.3 and one extra verse after 11.22 (“sarvatah pani-padante…”), which Gita Press mentions in a footnote as accepted only by the Shantanavi commentary; we leave it out. The colophon follows Gita Press (“devyah stutir nama”); other editions call the chapter “Narayani stuti”, the name used for the hymn. Gita Press and sanskritdocuments print a meditation verse (dhyana) at the head of the chapter; it is not counted among the 700 mantras, and on these pages the dhyana verses are given only at the head of the three parts of the text (chapters 1, 2 and 5). The transliteration and meanings are our own.
