Who Kuber is, and what the chalisa is

Kuber (Sanskrit Kubera, also called Vaishravana, “son of Vishrava”) is the treasurer of the gods and the king of the yakshas, the nature spirits who guard the treasures hidden in the earth. The Ramayana and the Puranas tell that he was the son of the sage Vishrava and a great-grandson of Brahma, that his deep devotion to Shiva won him the lordship of wealth and a place among the guardians of the directions (he watches over the north), and that he ruled from Alaka, a city near Mount Kailash. Ravana and Vibhishana were his half-brothers.

Kuber is the keeper of wealth rather than its source: tradition sees Lakshmi as prosperity itself and Kuber as the one who guards and distributes it. That is why the two are worshipped together, above all on Dhanteras and Diwali, when many families honour Kuber alongside Lakshmi and Ganesha.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Kuber Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty-four chaupais (couplets) and closes with two dohas. It describes Kuber's family, his throne, his army of yakshas and his devotion to Shiva, and then speaks of the help devotees hope for from him, in the everyday language of debts, business, illness, court cases and elections. Unlike the Hanuman Chalisa, it is a recent folk hymn: no poet is named, apart from a closing line that credits the praise to a “Manas Parivar”, and it is printed in small booklets and on devotional websites rather than in any old collection.

The hopes the hymn expresses are words of devotion, not promises. Tradition pairs Kuber's grace with honest work and generosity: he guards wealth for those who use it well.

Questions

Who wrote the Kuber Chalisa?

No poet is named. The last chaupai credits the praise to a “Manas Parivar” (a family or circle of devotees), but we could not trace who that was. The hymn is a recent folk composition in modern Hindi, printed without an author in small booklets and on devotional sites.

Are Kuber and Lakshmi the same?

No. Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity and grace, the consort of Vishnu; Kuber is the treasurer of the gods who guards wealth. They are often worshipped together, especially on Dhanteras and Diwali.

Why does it have forty-four chaupais, not forty?

“Chalisa” names the form, a hymn of about forty verses, not an exact count. Several chalisas have a few verses more or less.

Is there a Sanskrit prayer to Kuber as well?

Yes. The oldest is a Vedic verse from the Taittiriya Aranyaka, “Rajadhirajaya prasahya sahine”, still chanted at the end of temple worship as part of the Mantrapushpam. See the Kuber mantra page.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three published versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com) and InstaAstro (instaastro.com; identical to Bhakti Bharat). The forty-four chaupais and the four dohas we give are the same in all three. A printed booklet, Shri Kuber Chalisa (Karam Singh Amar Singh, Haridwar), names no author either.

Variants: ch. 43 bhog (Drik Panchang; Bhakti Bharat has the misprint bhod); ch. 43 sahasra (also spelt sahastra); ch. 3 इंद्र (also spelt इन्द्र); ch. 16 dhulaavain (printed dhoolaavain). Two sources add two more closing dohas (“nitt nem kar praatah hi…” and “Magsar chhathi Hemant ritu, samvat chausath jaan…”). These are the closing dohas of the Shiv Chalisa, word for word, including “a hymn of forty verses to Shiva”, so they belong to that text and are left out here; Drik Panchang leaves them out too. Small spelling differences (खडे/खड़े, दूर-दूर/दूर दूर) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
