Shri Tulsi Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
A hymn to Tulsi Mata, the holy basil, beloved of Vishnu. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Tulsi Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Fast recitation, full text (3 min)
The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.
Who Tulsi Mata is, and what the chalisa is
Tulsi is the holy basil, and in Hindu homes she is also a goddess: Tulsi Mata, or Vrinda. The Puranas tell that she was once Vrinda, the faithful wife of the asura Jalandhar, whose devotion made her husband impossible to defeat. To end Jalandhar's war on the gods, Vishnu took on her husband's form and broke her vow; in her grief she cursed him to become a stone, the Shaligram, and he in turn blessed her to become the Tulsi plant, so dear to him that no offering to him is complete without her leaf. Their bond is celebrated every year in Tulsi Vivah, the wedding of the Tulsi plant with the Shaligram or Krishna.
Across India a Tulsi plant grows in the courtyard or on the balcony of countless homes; it is watered in the morning and given a lamp at dusk, and its leaves are placed in food offered to Vishnu and Krishna.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Tulsi Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty chaupais and closes with four dohas. Most of it tells Tulsi's story through three births: her wish to marry Vishnu and Lakshmi's curse, her life as the wife of Shankhachuda after Radha's curse, and her birth as Vrinda, Jalandhar's death and the two curses that made her the Tulsi plant and Vishnu the Shaligram. It is a traditional folk hymn in a mix of Braj and Awadhi. The poet is not known for certain: one chaupai names a poet Sundar, and the last doha names Tulsidas, who calls himself Sukhram, son of Tulsi; this is not taken to be Goswami Tulsidas of the Ramcharitmanas.
Tulsi Vivah, the festival of Tulsi's wedding to Vishnu (as the Shaligram), falls on Saturday, 21 November 2026 this year, on the twelfth lunar day of the bright half of Kartik; some families keep it a day earlier, on Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi.
Many families recite it in the month of Kartik and at Tulsi Vivah, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions
Who wrote the Tulsi Chalisa?
It is not known for certain. The text names a poet Sundar in one chaupai and, in its last doha, a Tulsidas who calls himself Sukhram, son of Tulsi. Nothing more is known about them, and the hymn is not attributed to Goswami Tulsidas, the author of the Hanuman Chalisa. It is a traditional folk hymn.
Why did Vrinda curse Vishnu?
Vishnu came to her in the form of her husband Jalandhar, so that her faithfulness, which protected Jalandhar, would be broken and the war on the gods could end. When she discovered the deception she cursed him to become a stone (the Shaligram) and to lose his wife as Jalandhar had lost his life, which the chalisa links to Ravana carrying off Sita. Vishnu in turn made her the Tulsi plant, forever dear to him.
Is there more than one Tulsi Chalisa?
Yes. This page gives the most widely printed one, which begins “Jai jai Tulsi Bhagavati”. Another, shorter hymn begins “Shri Tulsi Maharani, karoon vinay sirnaay” and is a prayer of praise rather than a story.
What is the Shaligram?
A smooth black stone, often holding the spiral of an ancient fossil, found in the Gandaki river in Nepal and worshipped as a form of Vishnu. In the chalisa Vishnu takes this form because of Vrinda's curse, which is why the Tulsi plant and the Shaligram are worshipped together.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across three published versions: Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com), InstaAstro (instaastro.com) and Navbharat Live (navbharatlive.com). All three carry the same words, including the same worn lines, so they go back to one printed tradition; Navbharat Live has corrected a few misprints. We give two opening dohas, forty chaupais and four closing dohas, as all three do. A different, shorter Tulsi Chalisa (“Shri Tulsi Maharani, karoon vinay sirnaay”, printed by Aaj Tak) is not given here.
Readings: ch. 1 तुलसी (Navbharat Live; the other two misprint तलसी); ch. 2 हरिहीं (printed हरीहीँ); ch. 13 शङ्खचूड (printed शङ्ख चुड); ch. 25 हृदय (also ह्रदय); ch. 33 सहस्र (also सहस्त्र); ch. 36 व्यञ्जन (printed व्यन्जन). Lines kept exactly as all three print them, though their wording is worn: ch. 5 कध पर आनी (the sense, “in anger”, suggests क्रोध उर आनी); ch. 9 व्हौ रौ पाती तोरा (sense “I shall be your husband”); ch. 17 संग्राम (the rhyme suggests संग्रामा); ch. 22 सुनी उर शोक उपारा (sense “great grief rose in her heart”); ch. 30 धग्व रूप (sense “I shall take the form”, perhaps धरब रूप); ch. 39, whose second half we could not make out; and the second and fourth closing dohas. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
