Sundarkand · Part 2 of 6
Sundarkand Part 2 (Dohas 11–20): Hanuman meets Sita and is bound by Meghnad, in Hindi with English meaning
The heart of the Sundarkand: Trijata’s dream gives Sita hope, Hanuman drops Rama’s ring, tells her Rama’s own words of love, and receives her blessing. Then he lays waste the Ashoka grove, kills Akshay Kumar, and lets Meghnad’s Brahmastra bind him so that he can stand before Ravana.

What happens in part 2
Part 1 ended with Ravana giving Sita a month and the demonesses gathering to frighten her. Now Trijata, a demoness devoted to Rama, tells them a dream: a monkey burns Lanka, Ravana rides a donkey southwards, and Lanka passes to Vibhishana (11.2–11.4). Alone again, Sita begs Trijata for a pyre and even asks the Ashoka tree to live up to its name, “free of sorrow” (12.5). At that moment Hanuman drops Rama’s ring, and she catches it like an ember (sortha 12).
Hanuman sings Rama’s virtues, comes forward, swears he is Rama’s messenger, and wins her trust (doha 13). Then he gives Rama’s own message, among the tenderest passages in the Manas: without her the moon burns like the sun, and the truth of their love is known to his mind alone, which stays always with her (15.1–15.4). To ease her doubt he shows his mountain-sized form (16.4), and Sita blesses him: “may you never age, never die, and be a treasury of virtues” (17.2).
With her leave Hanuman eats the fruit and tears up the grove, kills the guards and Ravana’s son Akshay Kumar (18.4), and fights Meghnad to a standstill. When Meghnad looses the Brahmastra, Hanuman lets it bind him out of respect for Brahma’s weapon (doha 19); Shiva reminds Parvati that the messenger of the Lord whose name cuts all bonds is bound only by choice, for his Lord’s work (20.2). The part ends with Hanuman standing fearless in Ravana’s court, “like Garuda among snakes”. With the meanings it takes about half an hour to read.

Questions
What blessing did Sita give Hanuman in the Sundarkand?
After hearing Rama’s message and seeing Hanuman’s true form, Sita blesses him to be a treasury of strength and good character, and then: “Ajar amar gunanidhi sut hohoo”, may you never age, never die, and be a treasury of virtues, and may Rama love you greatly (17.1–17.2). Hanuman is moved most by the words “may the Lord be gracious”.
Why did Hanuman let himself be bound by Meghnad?
Meghnad could not defeat him and finally used the Brahmastra. Hanuman thought that if he did not yield to Brahma’s weapon, its great glory would be undone (doha 19). Tulsidas adds that he let himself be bound only for his Lord’s work (20.2): it brought him straight into Ravana’s court, where he could deliver Rama’s warning.
What was Trijata’s dream?
Trijata, a demoness who loved Rama, dreamt that a monkey burned Lanka and killed its army, that Ravana went south on a donkey, shaven and stripped of his arms, that Lanka passed to Vibhishana, and that Rama sent for Sita (11.1–11.4). She told the other guards to serve Sita, and they grew afraid of harming her.
How is the Sundarkand usually read, and how long does this part take?
Many families read the whole Sundarkand on Tuesdays or Saturdays, often together and in a steady chant, after lighting a lamp before an image of Rama and Hanuman; others read one part a day. Reciting this part in Awadhi takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and longer with the meanings. There is no fixed rule: what matters most is a calm, attentive reading.
Text and sources
The Sundarkand is the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas, written in Awadhi by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century; the text is public domain. We follow the Gita Press (Gorakhpur) edition, the standard text, in its numbering and its reading. We took the Gita Press wording directly from the text layer of two of its own digital Sundarkand editions on archive.org (book code 1919, the plain text, and 1349, the text with Hindi commentary; both agree word for word in this part), and compared every line by program with an independent digital text: the IIT Kanpur Ramcharitmanas text as published on sanskritdocuments.org (the same transcription is reused in the open GitHub datasets bhavykhatri/DharmicData and WirelessAlien/Ramcharitmanas, so we count it once). We also used archive.org's own scan OCR of both Gita Press books to confirm the chaupai numbering. The transliteration and the meanings are our own.
Readings that differ: about 30 small differences in this part, almost all spelling; we follow Gita Press throughout, for example: 12.1 “dusah birahu” (IIT Kanpur: “dusahu”); 12.4 “milihi na pavak” (“milahi”); sortha 12 “mudrika dari … angar deenh” (“dari (long) … deenhi”); 13.4 and 13.6 “kahi (long: kahī)”; 14.1 “bhayahu tat mo” (“bhayau … mo (nasal)”); 15.2 “kuntaban”; 15.3 “tatva”; 15.4 “etanehi” (“etenahi”); 16.4 “prakat keenhi”; 18.4 “pathayau”; doha 19 “tehi sandha” (IIT Kanpur: “tehin”), but 20.1 “tehin mara”, “tehin dekha” (IIT Kanpur: “tehi”). Gita Press prints doha 12 as a sortha, and we label it so.
