Sundarkand Part 3 (Dohas 21–30): Hanuman burns Lanka, in Hindi with English meaning

Bound and brought before Ravana, Hanuman calmly tells the king who Rama is and begs him to return Sita. Ravana orders his tail set on fire, and Hanuman uses that fire to burn Lanka. He then takes a jewel from Sita as a token, leaps back across the sea, and is welcomed by Rama with an embrace.

Listen: Sundarkand Part 3: Hanuman burns Lanka

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What happens in Part 3

At the end of Part 2, Hanuman had let Indrajit bind him with the Brahma weapon so that he could see Ravana face to face. Ravana laughs at the captive monkey, then remembers his slain son Akshaya and grows grim. Part 3 opens with his questions (21.1): who are you, and on whose strength did you wreck my grove? Hanuman’s answer (21.2 to doha 23) is one of the great speeches of the Ramcharitmanas: Rama is the power behind creation itself, and even now, if Ravana returns Sita and takes shelter with him, Rama will forget his wrongs (doha 22).

Ravana only mocks him. When the demons rush to kill Hanuman, Vibhishana reminds the court that a messenger must not be killed (24.4), so Ravana orders his tail wrapped in oiled cloth and set alight. Hanuman grows his tail until the city runs out of cloth, ghee and oil, slips free, and with the forty-nine winds behind him burns Lanka from end to end, sparing only Vibhishana’s house (26.3). Shiva, who is telling the story to Parvati, explains why Hanuman himself did not burn: he was the messenger of the one who created fire (26.4).

Hanuman then asks Sita for a token, and she gives him her chudamani, the jewel she wore in her hair, with a message for Rama (27.1–27.4). He leaps back across the sea, the monkeys celebrate in Sugriva’s honey grove, and the whole band reaches Rama, where Jambavan gives Hanuman the credit (30.3). The part ends with one of the most loved dohas of the Sundarkand (doha 30): Rama’s name guards Sita day and night, so her life cannot escape. Reciting this part takes about 15–20 minutes.

Dohas 21–24: Hanuman’s counsel in Ravana’s court

Ravana questions his captive; Hanuman tells him who Rama is and begs him to return Sita. Ravana orders his tail set alight.

Questions

Why didn’t Hanuman burn when Lanka burned?

Tulsidas gives the reason through Shiva, who is telling the story to Parvati (26.4): Hanuman was the messenger of Rama, who created fire itself, so fire could not harm him. Earlier (25.2) Hanuman smiles because he sees that Saraswati, the goddess of speech, has put the idea of the burning tail into Ravana’s mouth.

What is the chudamani that Sita gives Hanuman?

A jewel worn in the hair. Rama had given Hanuman his ring as a sign for Sita; now Sita sends her chudamani back as a sign for Rama (27.1), along with the story of Jayanta, Indra’s son, whom Rama once chased with a single blade of grass used as an arrow, to remind him of his power (27.3). In Part 4 Rama holds the jewel to his heart.

What does doha 30 (“nam paharu divas nisi”) mean?

Rama asks how Sita keeps herself alive, and Hanuman answers with a picture of a guarded house: Rama’s name is the watchman on duty day and night, her constant meditation on him is the closed door, and her lowered eyes are the lock, so her life has no way out. Some readers take “nij pad” as “your feet” rather than “her own feet”; the sense is the same. Many people learn this doha by heart as a picture of steady remembrance.

Text and sources

The Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas (16th century) is in the public domain; we follow the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition, the standard text, and its doha numbering. We checked every line of this part, from the chaupai after doha 20 to doha 30, against two Gita Press scans on archive.org (the Sundarkand “mool path”, item “sundar-kand-path”, and the Sundarkand with Hindi commentary, item “sundarkand-hindi”, both read from their OCR text) and against the digital text of IIT Kanpur’s Ramcharitmanas (heritage.iitk.ac.in), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spacing. The Sundarkand on Kavita Kosh and the open WirelessAlien/Ramcharitmanas dataset on GitHub reproduce that same digital text letter for letter, so we count all three as one “web text”. The transliteration and meanings are our own.

Where the web text differs, we follow Gita Press: “tumh se sathanh” (21.4; web text “tumh te”), “birachati maya” (21.2; “birachit”), “sunu Ravan” (21.2; “sun”), “kehi ke bal” (21.1), “jehi bhanja” and “ehi avasar” written जेहिं, एहिं (21.4, 26.2), “bandheu tanay” (22.3; “bandheu” without the nasal), “achal raju”, “rishi Pulasti … mayanka” and “sab bhooshan” (23.1–23.2; the web text has slips here), “jadapi kahi kapi” (24.1, written कही), “begi na harahu” (24.3; “harahu̐”), “keenhisi” and “dekhau mai” (25.1; “keenhasi”, “dekheu”), “kilikila” (28.1; “kilakila”), “Ramachandra” spelled रामचंद्र (28.2) and “trailok” (30.2; “trelok”).

Small spelling differences: the scans’ OCR often loses a chandrabindu or the second stroke of ै, so where only such a mark differs (for example “kijai/dijai” in 22.5, “gaye saran” in doha 22, “kiye kaju” in 29.4) we keep the reading of the web text, which agrees with common recitation; the sense is unchanged.
