A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
What happens in Part 4
Part 3 ended with Hanuman back at Rama’s side, telling him how Sita keeps herself alive. Part 4 opens as he hands Rama the chudamani and repeats Sita’s words (31.1–doha 31): for what fault have I been left? Each moment passes like an age. Rama’s eyes fill with tears, and he tells Hanuman that no one has ever done him such a kindness and that he can never repay it (32.3–32.4). Hanuman falls at his feet, and when Rama asks how he burned Lanka, he gives the whole credit away: a monkey can only jump from branch to branch; all of it was your power (33.4–doha 33).
Hanuman asks for just one gift, unfailing devotion, and Rama says “so be it” (34.1). Then the army sets out. Two long chhand verses (35, chhand) picture the march: the elephants of the quarters trumpet, the earth shakes, and the serpent Shesha grips the shell of the cosmic tortoise to bear the weight. The army camps on the seashore (doha 35).
In Lanka the mood has changed. Mandodari, Ravana’s queen, begs him privately to send Sita back (36.3–doha 36), but he laughs at her fears, and his ministers only flatter him; doha 37 is Tulsidas’s famous warning about advisers, doctors and teachers who say only what pleases. Then Vibhishana speaks (38.1–doha 40): lust, anger, pride and greed are roads to hell; Rama is no mere king but the Lord himself, who never turns away anyone who comes for shelter. The old minister Malyavan agrees, and Ravana drives him out; the part ends with Vibhishana holding his brother’s feet and pleading once more. Reciting this part takes about 15–20 minutes.
Dohas 31–34: Sita’s message and Hanuman’s humility
Rama hears Sita’s words, owns that he can never repay Hanuman, and grants him unfailing devotion.

Questions
Why does Rama say he can never repay Hanuman?
In 32.3–32.4 Rama says that no god, human or sage has ever done him such a kindness, and that after thinking it over he finds he can never be free of the debt. It is one of the tenderest moments in the Ramcharitmanas: the Lord himself admits he is in his devotee’s debt. Hanuman’s answer is to fall at his feet and, when asked about his deeds, to give all the credit back to Rama (33.5).
What does doha 37 (“sachiv baid gur”) teach?
That a minister, a physician and a teacher who say only pleasant things, out of fear or in hope of gain, bring quick ruin to the kingdom, the body and one’s dharma. Tulsidas places it just after Ravana’s ministers laugh off the danger, and it is often quoted on its own as advice about honest counsel.
Who is Malyavan, and what happens to him?
Malyavan is an old and wise minister of the demon family (in the Ramayana tradition, the elder brother of Ravana’s maternal grandfather Sumali). In 40.1 he supports Vibhishana’s advice, and Ravana orders both of them out of his sight (40.2). Malyavan goes home; Vibhishana stays and pleads once more, which leads in Part 5 to his being kicked out of the court and going to Rama for shelter.
Text and sources
The Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas (16th century) is in the public domain; we follow the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition, the standard text, and its doha numbering. We checked every line of this part, from the chaupai after doha 30 to doha 40, against two Gita Press scans on archive.org (the Sundarkand “mool path”, item “sundar-kand-path”, and the Sundarkand with Hindi commentary, item “sundarkand-hindi”, both read from their OCR text) and against the digital text of IIT Kanpur’s Ramcharitmanas (heritage.iitk.ac.in), comparing them by program after normalising punctuation and spacing. The Sundarkand on Kavita Kosh and the open WirelessAlien/Ramcharitmanas dataset on GitHub reproduce that same digital text letter for letter, so we count all three as one “web text”; IIT Kanpur’s page for doha 35 leaves out the two chhand verses, which we took from the Gita Press scans and Kavita Kosh. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
Where the web text differs, we follow Gita Press: “sunu sut tohi urin mai nahi” (32.4; the web text drops “tohi”), “nisichar gan badhi bipin ujara” (33.4; “bidhi”), “tav prabhav badavanalahi … anukool” (doha 33; “tab”, “badavanalahin”, “anukul”), “begi chaliya” written चलिअ (doha 31), “bachan kaya man” written कायँ (32.1), “sambad” written संबाद (34.2), “karahi hathi badha” (31.3; “karihi”), “garjahi” (35.1, 35.4; “garajahi”), “kinnar” written किंनर (chhand 1), “jab te jari gayau” and “dootinh san” (36.1–36.2; “jab te”, “dootanhi”), “tav kul kamal” (36.5; “tab”), “hiya dharahu” with a long final u (36.3), “jaki trasa” written जाकीं (37.2), “bani sahai” (38.1; “bani”), “mati anuroop” (38.2) and “Sita dehu” (doha 40; the web text has the slip “sit dehu”).
Small spelling differences: the scans’ OCR often loses a chandrabindu or the second stroke of ै, so where only such a mark differs (for example “kije/dije” in 34.4, “saran gaye” in 39.4) we keep the reading of the web text, which agrees with common recitation; the sense is unchanged.
