Sundarkand · Part 5 of 6
Sundarkand Part 5 (Dohas 41–50): Vibhishan takes refuge with Rama, in Hindi with English meaning
Vibhishan’s good advice earns him a kick from his brother Ravana. He leaves Lanka, crosses to Rama’s camp full of longing, and is welcomed with an embrace. This part holds some of the best-loved lines of the Ramcharitmanas on refuge: Rama’s promise never to turn away anyone who comes to him, and his own description of the devotee he holds in his heart.
What happens in part 5
Hanuman has found Sita, burned Lanka and returned, and Rama’s army of monkeys and bears now stands on the near shore of the sea. In Lanka, Ravana’s younger brother Vibhishan has just begged him to give Sita back. Part 5 picks up as Ravana answers that advice with insults and a kick (41.3). Vibhishan still wishes him well, then leaves through the sky with his ministers, saying he goes to Rama for refuge (doha 41). On the way his thoughts are all of Rama’s feet: the feet that saved Ahalya, that Sita holds to her heart, whose sandals Bharata worships (42.3–doha 42).
At the camp Sugriva suspects a spy and wants him bound. Rama’s answer is the heart of this part (43.4–44.4): his vow is to protect anyone who seeks his shelter, a soul’s past is wiped away the moment it turns to face him, and only a clean mind reaches him. Vibhishan is brought in, sees Rama, and is lifted into an embrace (46.1). Their talk gives two famous passages: Vibhishan’s lines on how greed, pride and attachment live in the heart only until Rama lives there (doha 46–47.2), and Rama’s own account of the devotee he holds in his heart “as a miser holds money” (48.1–doha 48).
Vibhishan asks only for devotion, yet Rama anoints him king of Lanka then and there with sea water (49.4–doha 49 b). Then Rama asks how the army can cross the sea, and Vibhishan suggests first praying to the Ocean, an elder of Rama’s family, since the sea was dug by the sons of his ancestor King Sagara (doha 50); part 6 tells what follows. Reciting this part takes about 15 to 20 minutes; reading it with the meanings takes longer.

Questions
Why did Vibhishan leave Ravana?
He had begged Ravana to return Sita to Rama and avoid ruin (dohas 38–40). Ravana called him a traitor and kicked him in front of the court (chaupai 41.3). Even then Vibhishan held his brother’s feet and said his good lay in turning to Rama (41.4). Only then did he leave, openly and without blame, telling the court that it was in the grip of death (doha 41).
What does Rama promise to those who come to him for refuge?
When Sugriva suspects Vibhishan of spying, Rama says his vow is to free from fear anyone who seeks his shelter (43.4). He will not reject even the worst sinner who turns to him, because the moment a soul faces him its past is wiped away (44.1), and if the newcomer comes in fear he will guard him like his own life (44.4). This idea, called sharanagati (taking refuge), is one of the main themes of the Ramcharitmanas.
Which qualities does Rama say make a person dear to him?
In chaupais 48.1–48.4 and doha 48 he describes someone who gathers all their attachments into one cord and ties it to God, who sees everyone equally, wants nothing, and is not shaken by joy, grief or fear; and someone who is devoted to the good of others and firm in right conduct. Such a person, he says, lives in his heart the way money lives in a miser’s heart.
Why does Rama crown Vibhishan before the war has even begun?
Vibhishan asks only for devotion, but Rama says that meeting him is never without fruit (49.5) and marks him as king of Lanka with sea water. Tulsidas adds (doha 49 b) that the same wealth Ravana won from Shiva by offering his ten heads, Rama gave Vibhishan freely, and even felt shy that it was so little. The scene shows how sure Rama’s word is, and how freely he gives.
Text and sources
The Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas (16th century) is public domain; we follow the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition, the standard text and numbering. We checked every line of this part by program, after removing punctuation differences, against three independent texts fetched for this page: the Ramcharitmanas text on IIT Kanpur’s Heritage site (heritage.iitk.ac.in, earlier the Gita Supersite), the Gita Press Sundarkand with Hindi commentary (book no. 1349) and a complete Gita Press Ramcharitmanas, both from scans on archive.org. Where the scanned text was unclear we read the lines in context, and we looked at the Kashi Raj edition (ed. Vishwanath Prasad Mishra, 1962) for a few readings. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
Readings followed: in doha 44 we give “jai kripal kahi kapi chale” with the word “kapi” (the monkeys), as in both Gita Press books and the Kashi Raj edition; the IIT Kanpur text leaves it out, which also breaks the metre. We also follow the Gita Press spellings “mrityu” (41.1), “dusht hriday” (44.2), “kinhi” (46.4), “avai” (48.1), “dinheu” and “dinhi” (doha 49), where the IIT Kanpur text has small slips. The Kashi Raj edition reads “anan amit madan chhabi moha” in 45.3 and “rakha” for “rakheu” in doha 49 (a); the meaning is the same.
