Sundarkand · Part 6 of 6
Sundarkand Part 6 (Dohas 51–60): The ocean yields to Rama, in Hindi with English meaning
Rama sits on the shore and asks the Ocean for a path. Meanwhile Ravana’s spies, caught in disguise, carry a letter back to Lanka, and one of them is set free from an old curse. When three days pass without an answer, Rama lifts his bow, and the Ocean comes to him with folded hands. The kand ends with a promise: those who hear Rama’s virtues with reverence cross the sea of worldly life without a ship.
What happens in part 6
Part 5 ended with Vibhishan advising Rama to ask the Ocean, an elder of his family, for a way across. Lakshmana dislikes waiting on fate (“it is the lazy who cry ‘fate, fate’”, 51.2), but Rama calms him, bows to the sea and sits on kusha grass on the shore (51.4). Meanwhile spies sent by Ravana, disguised as monkeys, are so moved by Rama’s kindness to Vibhishan that they forget their disguise and are caught. Lakshmana has them freed and sends a letter to Ravana (52.4–doha 52).
Back in Lanka the spy Shuka describes the army, naming its leaders (doha 54), and urges Ravana to make peace, since Rama is gentle and will hold no offence against him (57.3). Ravana mocks the letter and kicks Shuka, who goes to Rama and is freed from the curse of the sage Agastya that had made him a demon (57.6). After three days of silence from the sea Rama says “without fear there is no friendship” (doha 57) and sets a fire-arrow to his bow. The Ocean comes as a Brahmin with a plate of jewels, asks forgiveness, and tells Rama that the brothers Nala and Nila can make stones float (60.1). This part also holds the much-discussed line 59.3, spoken by the frightened Ocean; see the questions below.
Sundarkand closes with a chhand in which Tulsidas names himself (chhand), the doha that promises a safe crossing of the ocean of worldly life to all who hear Rama’s virtues with reverence (doha 60), and the colophon ending the fifth “step” of the Manas. The bridge itself is built at the start of the next book, Lanka Kand. Reciting this part takes about 15 to 20 minutes; reading it with the meanings takes longer.

Meaning: Moved by you, Maya brought them forth for the sake of creation; so all the scriptures sing. Whatever order the Lord has given to each, each finds its happiness in keeping to it.

Dhol gavanr soodra pasu nari, sakal tadana ke adhikari.
Meaning: “Lord, you did well to teach me a lesson, yet the limits of our nature were also set by you. The drum, the uncouth, the shudra, the beast and the woman are all fit for ‘tadana’.” People read “tadana” in different ways: as rebuke or beating, as instruction (the Gita Press commentary gives this sense), or as watchful care. These are the words of the frightened Ocean, not Rama’s teaching, and the line has long been debated.
Chaupai 59.4

Meaning: By your might I would dry up and the army would cross, but there would be no honour in it for me. Still, the Vedas sing that the Lord’s command cannot be set aside; I will do at once whatever pleases you.”

Meaning: I too, keeping the Lord’s greatness in my heart, will help as far as my strength allows. Lord, in this way have a bridge built over the sea, so that this fair glory of yours is sung in all three worlds.
Chaupai 60.3

Meaning: With this arrow, Lord, slay the wicked men who live on my northern shore, heaps of sin.” Hearing the pain in the Ocean’s heart, Rama, merciful and steady in battle, removed it at once.

Sakal charit kahi prabhuhi sunava, charan bandi pathodhi sidhava.
Meaning: Seeing Rama’s great strength and valour, the Ocean was glad and at ease. He told the Lord the whole story of those wicked men, bowed at his feet, and went away.
Chhand

taji sakal as bharos gavahi sunahi santat sath mana.
Meaning: The Ocean went home, and Rama approved his counsel. This story, which washes away the grime of the Kali age, the servant Tulsi has sung as well as he could. Rama’s virtues are a home of happiness; they end doubt and quell sorrow. O foolish mind, give up every other hope and support, and sing and hear of them always.
Doha 60

Meaning: Singing the virtues of Rama gives every blessing. Those who hear it with reverence cross the ocean of worldly life without any ship.
Colophon

Iti shrimad-Ramacharitamanase sakala-kali-kalusha-vidhvamsane
panchamah sopanah samaptah.
Meaning: Thus ends the fifth step (sopana), Sundarkand, of the holy Ramcharitmanas, which destroys all the impurities of the Kali age.
Questions
What does “bhay binu hoi na preeti” mean?
It means “without fear there is no friendship” (doha 57). Rama says it after asking the Ocean politely for three days with no reply. It is not a general rule for how to treat people: Rama first sits humbly on the shore and asks, and he lifts his bow only when asking has failed. In doha 58 Bhushundi adds a homely picture: a banana plant fruits only when it is cut, however much you water it.
What does the line “dhol gavanr soodra pasu nari” mean?
It is in chaupai 59.3, spoken by the Ocean while he is frightened and asking forgiveness, not by Rama. It says the drum, the uncouth, the shudra, the beast and the woman are all “adhikari” of “tadana”. The meaning turns on “tadana”: many read it as beating or rebuke, which has drawn long and serious criticism; the Gita Press commentary reads it as “instruction”, and some scholars take it as “care, watching over”. We give the text as printed and leave the reading open; Rama answers the Ocean only with a smile and a question about the bridge.
Who were Nala and Nila?
Two monkey brothers in Rama’s army. The Ocean tells Rama (60.1) that a sage blessed them as boys, so that stones and mountains they touch will float. In the next book, Lanka Kand, they build the bridge to Lanka with the army’s help.
How does Sundarkand end?
With a chhand in which Tulsidas names himself and asks his own mind to give up other hopes and sing Rama’s virtues, then doha 60, which says those who hear these virtues with reverence cross the ocean of worldly life without a ship, and finally the colophon closing the “fifth step” of the Manas. Many people end a Sundarkand recitation with this doha, followed by the Hanuman Chalisa or an aarti.
Text and sources
The Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas (16th century) is public domain; we follow the Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition, the standard text and numbering. We checked every line of this part by program, after removing punctuation differences, against three independent texts fetched for this page: the Ramcharitmanas text on IIT Kanpur’s Heritage site (heritage.iitk.ac.in, earlier the Gita Supersite), the Gita Press Sundarkand with Hindi commentary (book no. 1349) and a complete Gita Press Ramcharitmanas, both from scans on archive.org. The closing chhand and the colophon, which the IIT Kanpur text leaves out, we took from the two Gita Press books and checked against a third Gita Press scan (book no. 1919) and the Kashi Raj edition (ed. Vishwanath Prasad Mishra, 1962). The transliteration and meanings are our own.
Readings followed: “Sita dei milahu na ta ava kalu tumhar” (doha 52) and “teeni din” (doha 57), as in the Gita Press books and the Kashi Raj edition, where the IIT Kanpur text has “milehu”, “kal” and “teen”; “main puni ur dhari prabhu prabhutai” (60.2) with “prabhu” twice, which the metre needs and which the IIT Kanpur text drops; and the Gita Press spellings “trailokahi” (55.1), “sandhaneu” (58.3), “prabhu bhal kinh” (59.3), “tinh ken paras kie” and “ehin sar” (60.1, 60.3). The Kashi Raj edition has a few older forms with the same meaning: “kadali pharai” for “kadari pharai” (doha 58), “marajada puni tumhari-a kinhi” (59.3) and “utarai” (doha 59). In the chhand we read “davan bishad” (crushing sorrow), as in the Gita Press books and the Kashi Raj edition.
