In short: Classical texts do not ask "job or business?" in those words, but they distinguish service (seva, the 6th house) from trade and partnership (vyapara, the 7th) and from independent action (the 1st, 3rd and 10th). Modern astrologers read a stronger 6th house and Saturn as leaning toward employment and institutions, and a stronger 7th, 3rd and 11th, with Mercury and Mars, as leaning toward enterprise. Most charts mix both, and the decision rests on skills, capital, risk and timing far more than on any placement.

How the houses divide the question

House Theme for work Leans toward
1st self, initiative, independence being one's own authority
3rd effort, courage, skills, small ventures, media self-started work, risk-taking
6th service, daily work, employers, competition employment, service roles
7th trade, partners, clients, the marketplace business, partnership, consulting
10th action, status, profession the career itself (either way)
11th gains, networks, large earnings profits, scale
2nd savings, family wealth, capital the means to invest

The 10th house says what one does and how visibly; the 6th and 7th say much about on whose terms. The 6th is the house of serving someone else's purpose — an employer, a public institution, a cause. The 7th, opposite the self, is the house of dealing as an equal with others: customers, partners, the market.

Factors read toward employment

  • A strong 6th house or 6th lord, especially connected with the 10th: work within an organisation, with steady duties.
  • Saturn strong and connected to the 10th: long service in institutions, government, large companies or industry.
  • The 10th lord in the 6th, or the 6th lord in the 10th: a career defined by service or by competitive employment (see the 10th lord in the 6th house).
  • The Sun strong in the 10th: authority within a structure — often public service (see government job).
  • A cautious Mars and a weak 3rd house: less appetite for personal risk.

Factors read toward business

  • A strong 7th house or 7th lord connected with the 10th or 11th: trade, clients, partnerships (see the 10th lord in the 7th house).
  • Mercury strong — the natural significator of commerce, accounts and negotiation.
  • Mars and the 3rd house strong — initiative, courage and the willingness to take risks.
  • Rahu in the 10th, 7th, 3rd or 11th — unconventional or fast-growing ventures, foreign markets, technology.
  • A strong 11th and 2nd — the capacity to grow and keep profits.
  • Dhana yogas linking the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th lords (see wealth in the birth chart).

Mixed charts are the rule

In most charts both sets of factors appear. A common modern reading is a sequence: a period of employment that builds skills and capital (6th-house periods), followed by independent work when supportive dashas arrive (periods of the 7th, 3rd or 11th lords). Another is a hybrid — employment with a consultancy or side venture — which a strong 6th and 7th together often describe well.

Partnership specifically

The 7th house covers business partners as well as spouses. A well-placed 7th lord and benefic influence on the 7th are traditionally read as supporting partnerships; a 7th house under heavy pressure as a reason to keep agreements clear and written. That is good advice for anyone.

Timing a move

Astrologers commonly examine:

  • Dashas of the 7th, 3rd, 10th or 11th lords, Mercury, or the Amatyakaraka for a move toward business.
  • Jupiter's transit over the 10th, 11th or 7th from the ascendant or Moon for expansion.
  • Saturn's transit over the 10th for responsibility and consolidation — often a time to build carefully rather than leap.

In Western astrology

Western astrologers look at the Midheaven and its ruler, the 6th house (daily work, employment) and the 2nd (earned income). A strong Mars, Sun or Uranus, or many planets in fire signs, is often read as a temperament suited to independence; a strong Saturn or Capricorn emphasis as suited to building within structures. The approach is psychological rather than predictive.

FAQ

Which planet is best for business? Mercury, the significator of trade, is the classic answer, supported by Mars for initiative and a strong 7th and 11th house. But no single planet decides.

Does a strong 6th house mean I should never do business? No. It describes comfort with structured service and competition, which many successful business owners also have.

Is the 7th house only about marriage? No. It is also the house of business partners, clients and public dealings.

What does Rahu in the 10th mean for business? It is often read as ambition and unconventional or fast-moving fields. It asks for ethical clarity and careful risk management.
