In short: Neecha bhanga means 'cancellation of debility'. When a debilitated planet meets certain conditions, its weakness is cancelled, and classical texts say the result can even become a raja yoga — rise after difficulty.

The rule

A planet's debilitation is cancelled (Phaladeepika ch. 7 and BPHS) when one or more of the following holds:

  1. The lord of the sign in which the planet is debilitated is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.
  2. The lord of the planet's exaltation sign is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.
  3. The planet that is exalted in the debilitation sign is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.
  4. The debilitated planet is aspected by the lord of its debilitation sign.
  5. The debilitated planet and its dispositor are in exchange of signs.
  6. The debilitated planet is exalted in the navamsa (counted by some authors).

What it means

A debilitated planet with cancellation is traditionally read as one that struggles early and rises later — weakness turned into strength. Modern astrologers often see it in lives that overcome a specific difficulty and become accomplished in exactly that area.

A worked check

Take Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn. Its debilitation sign is ruled by Saturn; its exaltation sign, Cancer, is ruled by the Moon; the planet exalted in Capricorn is Mars. If Saturn, the Moon or Mars is in an angle from the ascendant or from the Moon, the debility is cancelled by the common rules. If Jupiter is also aspected by Saturn, or Jupiter and Saturn exchange signs, those are further cancellations. Exalted in the navamsa (Jupiter in Cancer in D9) is counted by some authors too.

An example

The Sun is debilitated in Libra. Its debilitation is cancelled if Venus (lord of Libra), Mars (lord of Aries, the Sun's exaltation sign) or Saturn (exalted in Libra) is in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon.

Background

Neecha bhanga is one of the most important correctives in Vedic astrology: it reminds the astrologer never to read a debilitated planet in isolation. Because the conditions are fairly broad, a large share of debilitated planets have at least partial cancellation.

When it gives results

A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Raja Yoga in Astrology — A raja yoga ('royal combination') forms when the lord of an angle (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the lord of a trine (1st, 5th, 9th) are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — Dharma-karmadhipati yoga forms when the lords of the 9th (dharma) and 10th (karma) houses are related by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • Dhana Yoga — Dhana yogas are combinations for wealth.
  • Lakshmi Yoga — Lakshmi yoga, named after the goddess of wealth and fortune, is traditionally formed when the 9th lord is strong in an angle in its own or exaltation sign and the lagna lord is strong.
  • Kahala Yoga — Kahala yoga is traditionally linked with courage, leadership and command.

FAQ

Is a debilitated planet always bad? No. Debility can be cancelled, and even uncancelled it shows an area of growth.

How many conditions are needed? Texts and authors differ; one is often counted as cancellation, several as a full raja yoga.
