How this calculator works

The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac into lunar mansions of 13°20′, each ruled by one of the nine grahas and split into four padas of 3°20′. Where the Moon falls among them colours how its themes show up: its motives and the way it acts.

The Moon’s nakshatra is also your birth (janma) nakshatra, which starts the Vimshottari dasha. See the birth nakshatra calculator for that view.

Calculated in your browser from the same chart as our free Kundli: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, mean node. The numbers match our free Kundli exactly.

Background

The Moon is the mind and the heart: how you feel, how you care for yourself and others, what makes you feel safe. In Vedic astrology it is so central that your "rashi" — your sign — means your Moon sign, and the Moon's nakshatra at birth sets the whole timeline of the Vimshottari dasha. Questions

How is the nakshatra of the Moon found?

From its sidereal longitude: the zodiac’s 360° divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each with four padas of 3°20′. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Is the Moon’s nakshatra the same as my birth nakshatra?

Yes. Your birth (janma) nakshatra is the nakshatra of the Moon.

Do I need my birth time?

Yes, ideally: the Moon moves about 13° a day, so it can change nakshatra or pada within hours.
