How this calculator works

The Sun’s degree fixes everything else about it: its sign (30° each), its nakshatra (13°20′) and pada (3°20′), its Navamsa sign, and its rank among the chara karakas.

We give the degree within the sign (for example 14°32′ Capricorn) and its place in the whole zodiac.

Calculated in your browser from the same chart as our free Kundli: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, mean node. The numbers match our free Kundli exactly.

Background

In both Vedic and Western astrology the Sun is the self at the centre of the chart — vitality, purpose, the father and figures of authority, and the quiet confidence of knowing who you are. Vedic texts call it the atma, the soul. Surya (the Sun) in Astrology: Meaning, Myth, Dignity and Dasha →

Questions

What is the Sun’s degree used for?

It places the Sun in a sign, nakshatra and pada, decides its Navamsa sign and its chara karaka rank (the Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in its sign).

Why does another site show a slightly different degree?

A different ayanamsa (we use Lahiri), true versus mean nodes for Rahu and Ketu, or a different birth time or time zone. A few arc-minutes rarely change the sign.

Is a planet weak at 0° or 29°?

Many astrologers treat the first and last degree of a sign with care, but strength is read from dignity, house, aspects and the whole chart, not from one number.
