Shri Mahalakshmi Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
Forty verses to Mahalakshmi, the great Mother of prosperity and grace, seen here as the first power of creation. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Mahalakshmi Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Who Mahalakshmi is, and what the chalisa is
Mahalakshmi, “the great Lakshmi”, is Lakshmi seen in her highest form. For most families she is simply Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, grace and well-being and the consort of Vishnu. In the Devi Mahatmya tradition she is also the supreme Mother herself, from whom Mahakali and Mahasaraswati arise, and great temples such as the Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) temple of Kolhapur and the Mahalakshmi temple of Mumbai honour her in that form.
Hindi devotion has two chalisas to her. The better known, the Lakshmi Chalisa, begins “Matu Lakshmi kari kripa”. This one, the Mahalakshmi Chalisa, begins “Jai jai Shri Mahalakshmi” and “Namo Maha Lakshmi jai mata”. It has one opening doha, forty chaupais (couplets) and a closing doha. It pictures her dressed in white on a white lotus, praises her as Adi Shakti, the first power, who made the world from the five elements, weaves the seed syllables shreem, hreem, kleem into a few verses, and ends with a personal prayer. In its last chaupai the poet names himself Govind; nothing more is known of him.
The hopes it voices, of wealth, health and children, are words of devotion, not promises. Many families recite it on Friday evenings and at Diwali, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions
How is it different from the Lakshmi Chalisa?
They are two separate hymns to the same goddess. The Lakshmi Chalisa (“Matu Lakshmi kari kripa”, signed by Ramdas) retells her birth from the ocean and her life beside Vishnu. The Mahalakshmi Chalisa (“Namo Maha Lakshmi jai mata”, signed by Govind) praises her as the first power of creation, robed in white, and includes seed syllables. Both are loved; neither replaces the other.
Who wrote the Mahalakshmi Chalisa?
The last chaupai names the poet as Govind, and nothing more is known about him. One online edition reads a different name in that line and ascribes the hymn to Sundardas, the poet of several other chalisas; neither ascription can be confirmed. It is a traditional hymn, printed in chalisa collections for decades.
What are “shreem, hreem, kleem” in the chalisa?
They are bija (seed) syllables used in Devi worship: shreem is Lakshmi's own syllable, hreem is linked with the goddess as the power of the universe, and kleem with attraction and love. In the chalisa they open three verses of prayer, much as “Om” opens a mantra; the printed texts write the first one as shri shri.
Why is she described in white here?
Lakshmi is usually pictured in red and gold. This chalisa follows a gentler image in which Mahalakshmi, as the supreme Mother, appears in pure white on a white lotus, a symbol of peace and clarity; the verses that follow call her calm and soft by nature.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across three versions: the Randhir Prakashan chalisa collections (Haridwar; Aarti Chalisa Sangrah, 2000, and 51 Chalisa Sangrah, 2004, scanned on archive.org), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and Hindu Blog (hindu-blog.com, checked line by line). All have the same opening doha, forty chaupais in the same order and the closing doha; the first two are almost word for word the same, Hindu Blog is a separate, rougher transcription. Shubh Panchang carries the same hymn.
Variants: opening doha maat (Hindu Blog maata); ch. 3 भण्डारन (print; Bhakti Bharat भण्डारण); ch. 4 padmaasan (print padamaasan); ch. 8 kamalnaal … tav chaari (Hindu Blog kamal nayan … tav chaari); ch. 10 shaanti svabhaav mridul tav Bhavaani (Hindu Blog leaves out shaanti svabhaav); ch. 14 chhavi vilok (Bhakti Bharat, Hindu Blog; the scan loses chhavi); ch. 15 au narpat … dhyaavain (Hindu Blog aur narpati … dhyaaven); ch. 16 tav … paaya (print; Bhakti Bharat tab … paaye); ch. 18 bilam, “delay” (print), where Bhakti Bharat and Hindu Blog read bimal, which gives no sense here; ch. 20 so (Bhakti Bharat misprints se); ch. 24–25 the seed syllables are written Om hreem Om hreem, Om kleem Om kleem, as Bhakti Bharat and Hindu Blog write them; ch. 24 jan un is printed so everywhere and is translated loosely as “your people”; ch. 34 keejai (print keeje); ch. 36 mori (Bhakti Bharat; print meri); ch. 40 Govind (print, Bhakti Bharat; Hindu Blog Kamal); closing doha sunai chit … as gaay (Hindu Blog sune chitt … yash gaay). Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
