Listen: Navagraha Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

The nine planets, and what the chalisa is

The Navagraha, the “nine planets” of Jyotish, are the Sun (Surya), the Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani) and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. In Hindu tradition each is also a deity with a story, a family and a form: Surya on his seven-horse chariot, Chandra on Shiva's brow, Mangal the son of the Earth, Budh the son of the Moon, Brihaspati the guru of the gods, Shukra the guru of the asuras, Shani the son of the Sun and Chhaya, and Rahu and Ketu, the two halves of the asura Svarbhanu. Many temples keep a shrine where all nine stand together.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Navagraha Chalisa opens with two dohas, then gives four chaupais to each planet in turn, from the Sun to Ketu, calling each by its many names; four closing chaupais and two dohas name the poet. He is Sundardas, “servant of Rama”, who lived in the village of Kakra near Prayag, by the hermitage of the sage Durvasa. A poet of the same name and place signs the Bhairav Chalisa, and “Ramsundar” the Ganesh and Shani chalisas; nothing more is known about him.

The chalisa calls itself a prayer for the planets' peace (navagraha shanti). That is the language of devotion, not a remedy or a promise: in Jyotish the planets describe the shape of a life, and the hymn simply honours them all.

Many families recite it on Saturdays or at the start of something new, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Shri Navagraha Chalisa, with meaning

Each verse is given in Hindi, in English letters, and with a short meaning: two opening dohas, four chaupais for each of the nine planets, four chaupais about the poet and two closing dohas.

Questions

Who wrote the Navagraha Chalisa?

The poet signs it in the closing verses: Sundardas, a devotee of Rama from the village of Kakra near Prayag, by the hermitage of Durvasa. Nothing else is recorded about him or his date.

Which are the nine planets?

The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, the points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. See the planets in Vedic astrology.

Why is Mars missing from the second doha?

The doha names the Sun, the Moon twice (Shashi and Som), Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. All the editions we checked read Som; it may once have been Bhaum, a name of Mars. Mars has its own four chaupais just after the Moon's.

Is the Navagraha Chalisa connected with my chart?

It honours the same nine planets that a Vedic chart is drawn with. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result. To see where the nine sit in your own chart, open your free Kundli.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line with a printed collection, 51 Chalisa Sangrah (Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, 2004; scan on archive.org), with Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com) and with three online transcriptions that share one text: Bhakti Bharat, Aaj Tak and Hindu Blog. All agree on the structure and on almost every word; where they differ we follow the reading of the print and Drik Panchang, or the one the metre and sense require.

Variants: ch. 3 कलेशा (the online texts कलेषा); ch. 16 poojahu … kahun (print and Drik Panchang; the online texts poojahin … kahun); ch. 21 nirantar (print; the online texts misprint nirantan); ch. 32 kahin aavahu (print and Drik Panchang; the online texts drop ka); ch. 35 balvaana (print, rhyming with thikaana; the online texts balvaan); closing doha 2 prem yut, “with love” (print; the others read prem sut). In doha 2 every edition names the Moon twice and leaves out Mars (see the questions above). In ch. 26 Vapra is printed in every edition, though Shani's usual name here is Babhru; in ch. 27 Pippal recalls the peepal tree linked with Shani; in ch. 28 the golden “foot” refers to the four padas (gold, silver, copper, iron) by which Jyotish describes Saturn's transit. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
