In short: Indu lagna ("Moon ascendant") is a special point used to read the flow of wealth. It is calculated from fixed numbers, called kalas or rays, assigned to the planets: add the kalas of the 9th lord from the ascendant and the 9th lord from the Moon, divide by 12, and count the remainder from the Moon's sign. Planets in and aspecting that sign, and its lord, are read for prosperity and for the periods in which it grows. It is a refinement used by some schools, attributed to Mantreswara's Phaladeepika, and it never outweighs the 2nd, 11th, 5th and 9th houses.
Why the 9th lords and the Moon?
The 9th house is the house of fortune (bhagya); the Moon is the mind and, in Vedic thinking, the receptacle of what we experience. Indu lagna brings the two together: it combines the fortune of the chart counted from the body (the ascendant) with the fortune counted from the mind (the Moon), and projects the result from the Moon. Indu is a Sanskrit name for the Moon.
The kalas
Each planet is assigned a number of kalas:
| Planet | Kalas |
|---|---|
| Sun | 30 |
| Moon | 16 |
| Mars | 6 |
| Mercury | 8 |
| Jupiter | 10 |
| Venus | 12 |
| Saturn | 1 |
Rahu and Ketu are not used; they do not own signs in this scheme.
How to calculate it
- Find the 9th house from the ascendant and its lord. Note that lord's kalas.
- Find the 9th house from the Moon's sign and its lord. Note that lord's kalas.
- Add the two numbers.
- Divide by 12 and take the remainder. If the remainder is 0, use 12.
- Count that many signs from the Moon's sign, counting the Moon's sign as 1. The sign reached is the Indu lagna.
Example. Cancer ascendant, Moon in Virgo.
- The 9th from Cancer is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter: 10 kalas.
- The 9th from Virgo is Taurus, ruled by Venus: 12 kalas.
- 10 + 12 = 22. 22 ÷ 12 leaves a remainder of 10.
- Count 10 signs from Virgo: Virgo 1, Libra 2, Scorpio 3, Sagittarius 4, Capricorn 5, Aquarius 6, Pisces 7, Aries 8, Taurus 9, Gemini 10.
The Indu lagna is Gemini — the 12th house for this Cancer ascendant.
How it is read
- Planets in the Indu lagna. Benefics there — Jupiter, Venus, a strong Mercury or Moon — are traditionally read as supporting prosperity; an exalted planet more strongly still. Malefics are read as wealth coming with effort, or with matching expenses. A malefic in its own sign or exaltation is read more kindly.
- Its lord. The lord's dignity and house matter as for any ascendant.
- Its relation to the main ascendant. In the example above it falls in the 12th from the lagna, which some astrologers would read as wealth flowing through foreign connections, spending or charity rather than accumulation. In the 2nd, 11th or a kendra it is read as supporting accumulation.
- Dashas of planets in or ruling the Indu lagna are examined for periods when finances grow.
How much weight should it carry?
Indu lagna is popular in some North Indian and modern schools and little used in others. Because it uses only sign lords and the Moon's sign, it is stable — it does not depend on an exact birth time, unless the ascendant or Moon is near a sign boundary. That stability is a strength for a special point, but it also means it says nothing about the rest of the chart.
Read it as one confirming indicator. The core of a wealth reading remains the 2nd and 11th houses, the 5th and 9th, their lords and the dhana yogas, as explained in wealth in the birth chart.
FAQ
Why is Saturn given only 1 kala? The kalas are traditional values, often described as the planets' "rays". The texts give the numbers without a rationale, and modern explanations (brightness, speed, symbolism) are guesses; none fits every planet.
What if the Indu lagna is the same as my ascendant? Then the reading of the ascendant and its lord carries extra weight for wealth.
Does Sunyra calculate Indu lagna? Not yet in the kundli tool. The calculation above takes a minute with your chart's ascendant and Moon sign.
Is the Indu lagna the same as the Chandra lagna? No. Chandra lagna is simply the Moon's sign used as an ascendant. Indu lagna is a calculated point counted from it.
