In short: In Lal Kitab every planet has a pakka ghar — a permanent or "own" house in the fixed chart where Aries is always the 1st house. The Sun's is the 1st, the Moon's the 4th, Venus's the 7th, Rahu's the 12th and Ketu's the 6th; Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have more than one. Published lists agree on most of these and differ on a few, which we mark. A planet in its pakka ghar is read as settled and reliable; the condition of its pakka ghar also matters even when the planet is elsewhere.

The table

Mars 3rd, 8th —
Mercury — 7th
Jupiter 2nd, 5th, 9th 11th, 12th

Saturn 8th, 10th 11th
Rahu 12th —
Ketu 6th —

Our planet-in-house pages use exactly this table, so a placement is described the same way everywhere on the site. Where a house is listed as a variant, the page says so.

The logic behind the list

Many of the pakka ghars echo the natural significators (karakas) of Parashari astrology: the Sun for the 1st (self and vitality), the Moon for the 4th (mother and the heart's peace), Venus for the 7th (partnership), Jupiter for the 2nd, 5th and 9th (wealth, children and fortune), Saturn for the 8th and 10th (longevity and work), Mars for the 3rd (courage). Rahu's 12th and Ketu's 6th follow Lal Kitab's own reading of the nodes. The resemblance is clear, but the books state the scheme on their own authority rather than deriving it.

How it is used

  • A planet in its own pakka ghar is read as comfortable and dependable for that house.
  • A planet's pakka ghar occupied by its enemies is read as unsettling that planet's significations, even if the planet itself sits elsewhere.
  • Remedies often aim to "strengthen" a planet's pakka ghar or the house it occupies through objects or acts associated with that planet.
  • Fixed signs. Because the 1st house is always Aries in Lal Kitab, a planet's pakka ghar is also a fixed sign: the Sun's 1st is Aries (its exaltation), Venus's 7th is Libra (its own sign), Saturn's 10th is Capricorn (its own sign). The overlaps with Parashari dignity are deliberate in the scheme.

Pakka ghar versus exaltation

Lal Kitab also uses exaltation and debilitation, applied to its fixed houses: since the 7th is always Libra, Saturn in the 7th is "exalted" in Lal Kitab terms whatever its sign in the birth chart. That is the same logic as the pakka ghar — houses read as signs — and it is why Lal Kitab readings can differ sharply from Parashari ones for the same chart.

FAQ

What does pakka ghar mean? "Permanent house" or "solid home" in Hindustani: the house where a planet is most at home in Lal Kitab.

Is pakka ghar the same as own sign? Not quite. Own sign is a Parashari dignity; pakka ghar is a Lal Kitab house. Because Lal Kitab fixes houses to signs, they often coincide.

Does Mercury have a pakka ghar? Some lists give it the 7th, sharing with Venus; others do not assign one. We mark it as a variant.
