In short: Daridra yogas are combinations classical texts associate with financial difficulty. The best-known forms involve the 11th lord (gains) placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. Like all difficult yogas, they have many mitigating factors and should never be read alone.
The rule
The most commonly cited daridra yoga forms when the lord of the 11th house occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th house (BPHS ch. 42 and Phaladeepika give this and other forms).
For each ascendant
The 11th lord for each ascendant:
| Rising sign | 11th lord |
|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn |
| Taurus | Jupiter |
| Gemini | Mars |
| Cancer | Venus |
| Leo | Mercury |
| Virgo | Moon |
| Libra | Sun |
| Scorpio | Mercury |
| Sagittarius | Venus |
| Capricorn | Mars |
| Aquarius | Jupiter |
| Pisces | Saturn |
What it means
Daridra yogas describe areas where effort to earn or keep wealth meets obstacles. In modern terms they point to where financial planning, effort and caution matter more.
Reading the 11th lord
The 11th lord in the 6th can describe gains spent on debts, disputes or health; in the 8th, gains that come and go suddenly or through others' resources; in the 12th, gains spent abroad, on charity or on pleasures. Each also has a constructive side: the 6th lord's house is also service and competition, the 8th research and insurance, the 12th foreign work.
What weakens or cancels it
Benefic aspects, strong dhana yogas elsewhere, a strong lagna lord, and good dashas all mitigate them. A viparita raja yoga may also form when the 11th lord is in a dusthana alongside dusthana lords.
Background
The daridra yoga chapters balance the dhana yoga chapters in BPHS: classical astrology looks at both sides. They are a reminder that the texts are frank about difficulty — and that the same texts list what offsets it.
When it gives results
A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.
