In short: Cancer (the Crab, 21 June – 22 July in the tropical zodiac) is a cardinal water sign ruled by Moon. In love it needs emotional security and a sense of home. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces, and on friendly terms with Virgo and Taurus; its opposite, Capricorn, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Cancer loves

Cancer loves protectively. It wants a partner it can care for and a home that feels safe, and it remembers every kindness and every hurt. Under a sometimes guarded shell it is deeply affectionate, and it shows love through looking after people — feeding them, remembering what matters to them, keeping family close.

What helps a Cancer grow in a relationship is saying what hurts directly rather than retreating into its shell.

Sign by sign

Cancer and Aries

Aries meets the world head-on; Cancer protects what matters. Aries learns gentleness and Cancer learns boldness, provided Aries' bluntness is not mistaken for unkindness. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.

Cancer and Taurus

Earth and water in their most natural pairing: both value home, security and loyalty. Affection tends to be steady and practical. Moodiness and stubbornness are the small storms. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.

Cancer and Gemini

Gemini lives in the head, Cancer in the heart. Gemini's lightness can ease Cancer's worries, and Cancer can teach Gemini emotional depth, if Gemini's teasing stays kind. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.

Cancer and Cancer

Two Cancers understand the need for safety and belonging instinctively. The home is warm and protective; the shared risk is retreating into moods instead of speaking. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is emotional security and a sense of home, offered in both directions.

Cancer and Leo

Cancer nurtures and Leo shines. Leo's warmth reassures Cancer, and Cancer's care supports Leo. Both are sensitive to slights, so appreciation should be spoken aloud. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.

Cancer and Virgo

Water and earth: Cancer's care and Virgo's practical help fit well. A considerate, home-loving pair; worry is the habit they can amplify in each other. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.

Cancer and Libra

Cancer wants closeness, Libra wants harmony and some social air. Both dislike conflict, which can leave issues unspoken; gentle directness helps them both. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.

Cancer and Scorpio

Two water signs with deep feeling and loyalty. Emotional understanding is strong; jealousy or withdrawal under hurt are the patterns to recognise early. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Water with water shares deep emotional understanding; the challenge is perspective when moods run high. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.

Cancer and Sagittarius

Cancer seeks home and Sagittarius seeks the open road. Sagittarius's optimism can lift Cancer, and Cancer's care can give Sagittarius a place to return to. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure.

Cancer and Capricorn

Opposite signs of home and the world: Cancer tends the private life, Capricorn the public one. Together they can build something lasting, if feelings are given as much time as plans. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Water nourishes earth: care and practicality support each other. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.

Cancer and Aquarius

Cancer needs emotional closeness and Aquarius needs independence. The pairing asks for real understanding, and rewards it with a relationship that is both caring and free. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Air and water meet as head and heart; understanding grows when each takes the other's language seriously. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.

Cancer and Pisces

Two water signs, intuitive and compassionate. Emotional rapport is natural; practical matters and boundaries need conscious attention. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Water with water shares deep emotional understanding; the challenge is perspective when moods run high. Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.

Which signs suit Cancer best?

By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Cancer are the same-element trines (Scorpio and Pisces) and the sextiles (Virgo and Taurus), with Capricorn as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.

Sun signs and Moon signs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 21 June and about 16 July have their Sun in Cancer by Western reckoning but in Gemini (Mithuna) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.

Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Cancer Moon sign compatibility.

Beyond the Sun sign: synastry

Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.

FAQ

Who is Cancer most compatible with? Traditionally the other water signs (Scorpio, Pisces) and the sextile signs (Virgo, Taurus). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.

Is Cancer compatible with Capricorn? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (cardinal) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.

Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Cancer have the Sun in Gemini in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
