In short: Sagittarius (the Archer, 22 November – 21 December in the tropical zodiac) is a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter. In love it needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure. By the classical aspects it is most at ease with the other fire signs, Aries and Leo, and on friendly terms with Aquarius and Libra; its opposite, Gemini, is the classic attraction of opposites. But a Sun sign is one factor in a chart of many. Read this page as a portrait of styles, not a verdict on any couple.

How Sagittarius loves
Sagittarius loves with optimism and humour. It wants a partner who is also a companion in adventure — travel, learning, ideas, laughter. Sagittarius is honest to the point of tactlessness, and it needs freedom; a relationship that feels like a cage will not hold it, but one that feels like a journey will.
What helps a Sagittarius grow in a relationship is showing up for ordinary days, not only for adventures.

Sign by sign
Sagittarius and Aries
Two adventurous fire signs with a shared appetite for freedom and new experiences. Honesty is easy here; staying put long enough to build something is the shared challenge. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Aries needs honesty, energy and room to act.
Sagittarius and Taurus
Taurus wants roots and Sagittarius wants the horizon. Taurus can give Sagittarius a home base, and Sagittarius can widen Taurus's world, if neither tries to change the other's nature. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Taurus needs patience, loyalty and physical affection.
Sagittarius and Gemini
Opposite signs of learning and travel: Gemini gathers facts, Sagittarius looks for meaning. Endless conversation and adventure; both need to make room for the ordinary. Opposite signs share a mode and complementary elements. The attraction of opposites is real: each embodies what the other is learning. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Gemini needs conversation, variety and humour.
Sagittarius and Cancer
Cancer seeks home and Sagittarius seeks the open road. Sagittarius's optimism can lift Cancer, and Cancer's care can give Sagittarius a place to return to. Signs five apart share neither element nor mode, and see the world from angles that do not naturally meet. The quincunx asks for constant small adjustments. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Cancer needs emotional security and a sense of home.
Sagittarius and Leo
Two fire signs, enthusiastic and generous. Fun and adventure come naturally; Leo wants devotion, Sagittarius wants freedom, and each can give both. Signs four apart share an element. The trine is the most comfortable aspect: values and rhythms tend to agree without much effort. Fire with fire is warm, lively and spontaneous; the challenge is that neither naturally slows down. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Leo needs warmth, loyalty and appreciation.
Sagittarius and Virgo
Two dual signs with different instincts: Virgo the detail, Sagittarius the big picture. They learn a lot from each other, and both need tolerance for the other's way of seeing. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Virgo needs reliability, kindness and calm.
Sagittarius and Libra
Air and fire, sociable and optimistic. Libra brings charm, Sagittarius brings adventure; both enjoy people and ideas, and commitment grows when freedom is respected. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Libra needs fairness, beauty and partnership.
Sagittarius and Scorpio
Scorpio seeks depth, Sagittarius seeks breadth. Scorpio may want more closeness than Sagittarius offers at first; candour and trust let both feel free and held. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Scorpio needs trust, depth and privacy.
Sagittarius and Sagittarius
Two Sagittarians share optimism, humour and a love of freedom. Life is never dull; building routines and finishing what they start is the shared work. Two people with the same Sun sign share a basic way of meeting life. That brings instant understanding and the same blind spots. What helps most is freedom, honesty and shared adventure, offered in both directions.
Sagittarius and Capricorn
Sagittarius expands and Capricorn consolidates. Capricorn can help Sagittarius's visions take shape; Sagittarius can bring faith and humour to Capricorn's effort. Neighbouring signs share neither element nor mode. Each tends to have what the other lacks, which makes the pair complementary but sometimes puzzling to each other. Fire and earth differ in pace — one acts on inspiration, the other on evidence — but each can steady or energise the other. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Capricorn needs commitment, respect and shared goals.
Sagittarius and Aquarius
Fire and air, both independent and idealistic. Friendship and shared causes come easily; both need to make room for vulnerability. Signs two apart are of compatible elements (fire with air, earth with water). The sextile is an easy, friendly aspect that rewards a little effort. Air feeds fire: ideas and enthusiasm spark each other easily. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Aquarius needs friendship, space and shared ideals.
Sagittarius and Pisces
Both traditionally ruled by Jupiter: generous, idealistic and spiritual. Sagittarius seeks meaning in the world, Pisces within; practical life needs attention. Signs three apart share a mode but clash in element. Squares bring friction and motivation in equal measure; many lasting couples are squares who learned to use the tension well. Fire and water are both passionate but in different ways; one expresses outwardly, the other feels inwardly, and both need to translate. Sagittarius needs freedom, honesty and shared adventure; Pisces needs gentleness, imagination and emotional understanding.
Which signs suit Sagittarius best?
By the classical logic of aspects, the easiest matches for Sagittarius are the same-element trines (Aries and Leo) and the sextiles (Aquarius and Libra), with Gemini as the complementary opposite. Squares and quincunxes are traditionally harder. In practice, though, Sun-sign compatibility predicts very little on its own: many devoted couples are squares, and many trines drift apart. What matters more is how the whole charts interact — and, above all, how two people treat each other.
Sun signs and Moon signs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Because the two are now about 24° apart, most people born between 22 November and about 16 December have their Sun in Sagittarius by Western reckoning but in Scorpio (Vrishchika) by Vedic reckoning. Neither is the "real" sign; they measure different things.
Vedic matchmaking does not use the Sun sign at all. It compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras through Guna Milan. If that is the tradition you follow, see Sagittarius Moon sign compatibility.
Beyond the Sun sign: synastry
Western astrologers compare two people through synastry: the aspects between every planet in one chart and every planet in the other. Venus and Mars describe attraction and desire; the Moon describes emotional needs; Mercury how two people talk; Saturn what makes a relationship feel committed — or heavy. The composite chart, built from the midpoints of the two charts, is read for the relationship as an entity of its own. Liz Greene's Relating (1977) and Stephen Arroyo's work on the elements shaped the modern psychological approach used here.
FAQ
Who is Sagittarius most compatible with? Traditionally the other fire signs (Aries, Leo) and the sextile signs (Aquarius, Libra). The whole chart matters far more than the Sun sign.
Is Sagittarius compatible with Gemini? Opposite signs are often strongly attracted and complementary. They share a mode (mutable) and balance each other's elements; the work is treating differences as balance rather than opposition.
Is my Vedic sign the same as my Western sign? Often not. Most people born in roughly the first three weeks of tropical Sagittarius have the Sun in Scorpio in the sidereal zodiac. Check both in your free kundli.
